Windup Girl by Poalo Bacigalupi review

In this episode, Chris and Eric dive into Paolo Bacigalupi’s The Windup Girl, a vividly imagined biopunk dystopia set in a future Bangkok teetering on the edge of collapse. With rising seas, deadly plagues, and a world economy ruled by genetically modified seeds, survival depends on biotechnology—and brutal power. The hosts unpack the novel’s haunting vision of a world where seed banks are vaults of unimaginable wealth, bio-corporations wield terrifying influence, and engineered humans known as “New People” navigate lives of exploitation and purpose. Join us as we explore the book’s unforgettable characters, moral dilemmas, and chillingly plausible future.   Image: https://i.etsystatic.com/5499337/r/il/a0cc62/2336760362/il_300x300.2336760362_sssr.jpg Music: (Alien 1963)  Trovi Alien 1963 Mp3 qui: https://www.file-up.org/1xyadit3u1ml

Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi review

Welcome to Lifedeathsifi.com, where hosts Eric and Chris dive deep into the wonders of time travel. In today’s episode, we unravel the enigmatic threads of time through the lens of Before the Coffee Gets Cold. Imagine a quaint café where time travelers are bound by strict rules: they cannot change the past; they must sit in one particular seat and return before their coffee cools or risk becoming a ghost. As we explore the heartwarming tales of four individuals, their journeys through time force them to confront love, loss, and regrets, all under the quiet weight of an unchanging fate?   Music: (Alien 1963) Music No Copyright Trovi Alien 1963 Mp3 qui: https://www.file-up.org/1xyadit3u1ml Image: https://www.amazon.com/Before-Coffee-Gets-Cold-Paperback/dp/B08P75GF28

How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe review

This week, Eric and Chris delve into the intriguing universe of Charles Yu’s How to Live Safely in a Science-Fictional Universe. "Holy Heinlein!": time machines as ordinary as phone booths, multi-universes at your fingertips, and time travel that demands an ironic patience. Yet, amidst the whimsical chaos of chronodiegetic manifolds and irrational gravity, Yu’s novel offers something far deeper. In this episode, we explore how Yu’s story transcends the boundaries of science fiction to touch on the very essence of human experience. It’s a narrative not just about navigating the complexities of speculative science but about grappling with the profound themes of memory, regret, and nostalgia. At its heart, this book is a poignant reflection on family and the choices that define our lives. Join us as we unravel the layers of Yu’s imaginative tale and discover how science fiction can illuminate our understanding of the real world. Tune in for an insightful discussion that promises to both challenge and inspire.   Music: (Alien 1963) Music No Copyright Trovi Alien 1963 Mp3 qui: https://www.file-up.org/1xyadit3u1ml Image: https://www.amazon.com/Live-Safely-Science-Fictional-Universe/dp/0307739457

    Timeline by Michael Crichton

In a lively discussion filled with enthusiasm for Michael Crichton’s blend of science fiction and historical intrigue, Eric and Chris delve into the depths of "Timeline." They explore the intricate dance between reality and fantasy as Crichton weaves a tale that blurs the lines between technological possibility and the fantastical elements of time travel. The conversation touches on the philosophical and ethical questions raised by the novel’s plot, while celebrating Crichton's meticulous research and rich storytelling. This chat highlights the characters' thrilling adventures across time and ignites curiosity about the scientific principles speculated within the story, all captured in the engaging and thought-provoking time travel season from Lifedeathscifi.   Music: (Alien 1963) Music No Copyright Trovi Alien 1963 Mp3 qui: https://www.file-up.org/1xyadit3u1ml Image: https://www.amazon.com/Timeline-Novel-Michael-Crichton/dp/0345468260

Slaughter House Five by Kurt Vonnegut review

Can time travel be all in your head? A hallucination? Or does time travel need a device? A button to push? Hosts Eric and Chris wrangle over this impossible conundrum in this goofy romp through the horrible history of WWII. How is it possible to write an anti-war novel during another misguided war and end up on Tralfamador? Vonnegut shows us how. LDSF recommends taking two Tylenol before reading any time travel story because even imagining jumping through space and time can hurt your head.

The Time Ships by Stephen Baxter review

Our heroes yo-yo back and forth through time meeting the future and the past and then the future in magnificent ships floating through the sea of time. Lifedeathscifi hosts Chris and Eric try to make sense of what is happening in Stephen Baxter's centennial tribute to H.G.Wells original Time Machine. Oh, and the floating heads...

The Time Machine by H. G. Wells Review

Lifedeathscifi looks into the well of time and sees H.G. Wells spinning a tale of science and time. The excitement of the first to travel into the vast beyond, is it science fiction or just another fantasy of the 19th century? If you were sitting in the time machine's chair, would you push the lever?   Music: (Alien 1963) Music No Copyright Trovi Alien 1963 Mp3 qui: https://www.file-up.org/1xyadit3u1ml

Desolation Road by Ian McDonald Review

Okay. This is part of the chronological journey of Martian stories. We began in 1912 and now seven stories later, We're in 1988. So far, most of, if not, all these stories use Mars in name only; like a stage backdrop, meaning it could have just as well happened on Mother Earth. This story is like visiting an art museum where you stumble on a gallery full of award-winning, disturbing, horrifying, wonderful, thought-provoking images. Red Star: The First Bolshevik Utopia by Alexander Bogdanov review

Another turn of the 19th century Russian author wrote about space travel and life on other planets, mainly Mars. Because this story was written by one of the founders of the Bolshevik movement, of course, there is a connection to Ukraine. Shout out and solidarity for Ukraine! Lightly discussed are antimatter, quantum physics, and "The Theory of Everything". And a surprise talk about Spotify and Joe Rogan; heartfelt.   Image: https://www.wondersandmarvels.com/ Music:(Alien 1963) Music No Copyright Download Mp3 Trovi Alien 1963 Mp3 qui: https://www.file-up.org/1xyadit3u1ml

Aelita by Aleksey Nikolayevich Tolstoy Review

Chris and Eric talk about Aelita by Aleksey Nikolayevich Tolstoy. Mysterious and wonderful in its fantasy sprinkled with some surprising sci-fi tidbits. Lifedeathscifi hosts Chris and Eric explore the humorous side of science fiction with John Carter's Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs.  This giggly sci-fi romp gives us more fantasy adventure than sci-fi but we both agree that it is worth the ride.  We explore the time and attitudes Burroughs penned his pulp fiction into original ideas still used over a hundred years later and honored by major writers of sci-fi ever since.   Image:"Squa Tront #4" by Marxchivist is licensed under CC BY 2.0 Music:(Alien 1963) Music No Copyright Download Mp3 Trovi Alien 1963 Mp3 qui: https://www.file-up.org/1xyadit3u1ml

The Ministry for the Future by Kim Stanley Robinson Review

Lifedeathscifi hosts Chris and Eric wonder about the near-time climate crisis sci-fi story, The Ministry of the Future by Kim Stanley Robinson. More utopian than dystopian? No shame in being a little of both. "Every problem has a solution and we had better hurry up or the solution changes, worse." "Chorus of Voices" by Robinson. Sounds like World War Z stuff. The Feed by M. T. Anderson Review

Lifedeathscifi with hosts Eric Bueschlen and Chris Herzberg talk about how they perceive life on the Feed. Feed by M.T. Anderson is a story written for young adults set in a near future where corporations know everything. Where water, air, and education are privatized and trademarked. Where you can take a vacation on the moon like a teenager can have spring break in Cancun. Water is heavy and Coke has too much sugar. Flying over fields of GMO meat.  Information that feeds into your brain is like buying a car; like a car, you can't leave once inside.  They found a plot hole. The Fountains of Paradise by Arthur C. Clark Review

Hosts Eric Bueschlen and Chris Herzberg talk about The Fountains of Paradise by Arthur C. Clarke.  Sri Lanka, Taprobane is the setting for this story and the real-life home of the author. Questions about whether the myths and illusions that fill the early history of the setting are told by a far distant narrator, Starglider perhaps, similar to the construction of the space elevator. HBO's Raised by Wolves premiered during this read and our hosts have some insights that cross over to Fountains of Paradise. Dune and The Foundation shows were sadly discussed due to pushed-back release dates. Would you go to a movie in a pandemic? Is there such a thing as watching a movie without popcorn? Does controlling the weather mean there is no god? Did Arthur C. Clark invent Facebook with the PIP, personal interest profile, he wrote about in Fountains of Paradise in 1979?   Music: No Copyright Music    Artist: Ramzoid    Title: Alien1963    You're free to use this song in any of your videos Image: "fountains of paradise" by cdrummbks is licensed under CC BY 2.0

Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler Review

Hosts Eric Bueschlen and Chris Herzberg hail The Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler. This is the third try for this episode. First, try Eric Didn't press record, second Chris didn't save, and this is the third try. This podcast starts out with how will this podcast start. We might be caught in a time loop. We talk about how this story is the "hero's journey" in the apocalypse. Lauren Oya Olamina and her group escape to the north through slavery and mobs of left-over humanity at our worst.  A horror show. Lauren develops her own religion based on change. She also suffers from "hyper empathy", and hypersensitivity to others' emotions.  Lauren sees the apocalypse coming and studies survival skills and creates a "go bag". Our hosts consider war, education, the 1%, chaos, villains, and heroes. There is a "Wake up Moment" and Halloween costumes. Pondering about: Are we too reliant on devices? Can we ever find the truth? Hosts Eric Bueschlen and Chris Herzberg relate to The Earth Abides by George R. Stewart. A 70-year-old story with relevance today. What was the earliest "last person on earth" story? The Machine Stops by E. M. Forster Review

Hosts Eric Bueschlen and Chris Herzberg wonder about The Machine Stops by E.M. Forster. Our hosts get right into it with all of the sci-fi connections this story has and it was written in 1909! The Starship Enterprise has visited more than one planet that has problems because they forgot who built the machine that protects them; the same is true in The Machine Stops. E.M. Forster creates a frightening world where people are hooked into a machine afraid to go into the polluted outside world; like in The Matrix, the main character Neo wakes up in an amniotic pod to a very different life he was living, like Logan's Run where society is so afraid of leaving the domes they live in that they allow a culling at the age of 30 to curb population. These stories strongly connect to Vishti's pod and her son, Kuno's journey to escape the machine. How could E.M. Forster have known so much about 100 years into his future? Respect.

    Ringworld by Larry Niven Review

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne Review

A lot of podcast production talk; music, scripts, and editing. Then some pandemic catch-up time it just felt like it had to happen. Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein Review

Hosts Eric Bueschlen and Chris Herzberg argue about this "first contact" satire on religion and politics. We try to answer the questions: Is this story a classic? Does the misogyny of the era disqualify a story from becoming a classic?
