29. 67

Diamond Dogs: A David Bowie Tribute

The Diamond Dogs is one of my favorite bands in Chattanooga.I've gone on record a number of times - probably too many times - saying, "I don't really care for so-called 'cover bands.'" A matter of taste, obviously - as many, many people almost certainly don't agree with me."But the point is moot in this instance, because - as they've told me themselves, more than once: This isn't a cover band - this is a tribute to their hero, and mine: David Bowie. And they always acquit themselves in fine style.

  30. 66

    The Briars

( https://www.thebriarsmusic.net/epk)This week’s session for the studio in the Chattanooga Public Library features The Briars, Jerris Schmidt and her husband Robert Lovett. Robert and Jerris both write, play guitar, and sing together with seamless harmony. Their stellar harmonies spring from their joy of working together singing and playing their heartfelt, homemade music. They also listen widely and incorporate songs from their heroes including Brandi Carlile, Bob Dylan, Hank Williams, and Gillian Welch in their sets.

    AuraChild

    (
<brightspot-cms-external-content url="https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=391812743555198&set=pb.100081794260676.-2207520000">https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=391812743555198&set=pb.100081794260676.-2207520000</brightspot-cms-external-content>)Aura Child is the psychedelic bass and electronic project of Jordan Gwarjanski, now based in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Jordan got his start in music by playing guitar in punk and hardcore bands in his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. After years of playing in the scene, though, punk and hardcore riffs lost their luster for Jordan, and so he decided to try his hand at an entirely different genre of music: electronic. With some coaching from friends and a lot of online research, Jordan slowly learned how to build an electronic track and be a live DJ. Now, a few EPs later, Jordan as Aura Child is playing festivals and regular gigs in the Chattanooga electronic scene. His set for us at the downtown public library was so fun and funky that we all struggled to stay in our seats. Check out his latest work “Star Burst” and add Aura Child to the list of local electronic DJs you just can’t miss.

  32. 64

    Abe Partridge

( https://www.abepartridge.com/press-kit)From the studio in the Chattanooga Public Library, this is a session featuring Abe Partridge who is both a visual artist and a singer and songwriter. In a profile in The Bitter Southerner, Tony Paris wrote “Partridge writes to make you sit up and think. He wants to jar your reality. Sometimes, his lyrics are sly and subtle. Sometimes they come at you with a roar and thunder, as if the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse were approaching, and the heavens were opening up to herald a warning."Together with his co-producer Ferrill Gibbs, Abe Partridge also makes the Alabama Astronaut, a podcast in which he and Gibbs explore songs previously undocumented at churches in Appalachia. Partridge also chats with Holiness preachers and looks into the practice of snake handling. It was in the Top 10 documentary podcasts on Apple Podcasts within days of its release and now has over 50k downloads and a 4.9-star rating. From the studio in the Chattanooga Public Library, this is Abe Partridge.

  33. 63

    The Ambient Monkeys

For this session recorded in the studio in the public library, we are delighted to feature two gifted veteran musicians, guitarist Denny Jiosa and percussionist Michael Moryc, from Nashville together with Michael Salter from Chattanooga playing drums. Together they are The Ambient Monkeys. The objective of these sessions is always to capture a live performance with all its in-the-moment energy, but only occasionally do we have musicians making music in the moment never to be repeated. That happened with this session from Ambient Monkeys thanks to the consummate skill of the three musicians along with the engineering and mixing by Sam Mentzer.

  34. 62

    Symatree

Symatree is a four-piece band from Cleveland, Tennessee that plays an electrifying fusion of rock, funk, and jazz…all with psychedelic improvisation at its core. All four members of the band are extremely talented musicians. The rhythm section is tight and reliable, communicating effortlessly even amidst the drummer’s penchant for performing with his eyes closed. The keys and lead guitar dance creatively in the melodic space of each song. Occasionally, when improvisation goes off the rails, the entire band takes the ride together as they work their way back to the main structure of the song. The set they performed for us at the downtown library was absolutely seamless, as each song melted into the next with sonic perfection. Even though we were indoors, behind glass, and devoid of a crowd, the band still put on a rockin’ show complete with matching red jumpsuits – their, now traditional, winter ensemble. In the summertime, you can expect to see Symatree rocking their breezy 2-piece set with the iconic 90’s blue and purple “jazz” theme. With all their high energy and improvisational jams, each and every performance from Symatree is a unique journey, ensuring that they are a live band you don’t want to miss.

  35. 61

    Fawley

From the studio on the second floor of the Chattanooga Public Library, this is a session featuring a band fronted by Corbin and Caroline Fawley. According to their bio, Corbin and Caroline “believe in country music beyond nostalgia, writing about the things they see in the present tense. Their shows are intimate and intense, emphasizing lyrics that could be read as blue-collar poetry and the relationship between two voices.” When they first began performing it was just the two of them. They’ve since expanded to a band and for this session, they added another member bringing them ever closer to the sound Corbin hears in his head.

  36. 60

    Jimmy Galloway

( Photo provided by Jimmy Galloway)From the studio in the Chattanooga Public Library, we have a session—a master class, really—with Jimmy Galloway and his harp guitar. Bruce Kaplan, writing about Jimmy Galloway, called him “the best guitarist in Chattanooga that most people don't know about.”

  37. 59

    Gig City Swing

(Graphic From Gig City Swing Facebook / Gig City Swing Facebook Page)From the studio in the Chattanooga Public Library, this is a session from Gig City Swing featuring Spencer West playing drums, Dakari Kelly on bass, Zach Simoni and Christian Oliveri playing guitars, and Sarah Oliveri on flute.

    Brownie Lee Hamilton Band

Brownie Lee Hamilton in the studio at the public library in Downtown Chattanooga.(Photo by Nessa Parrish / WUTC)This session features Brownie Lee Hamilton, first solo and then with his band. For the solo session, the irrepressible Brownie walked into the studio, sat down at the piano, introduced himself, and launched straight into a rousing take on a familiar song that could have been written for him. After a few songs by himself, Brownie joins the band and the energy level rises. By the end of the session, the band is wailing.

  39. 57

    Rachel McIntyre Smith & Friends

(Rachel McIntyre Smith)From the studio in the library downtown, we have a session featuring singer and songwriter Rachel McIntyre Smith who’s been a guest at least once before, but for this session, she brought a couple of friends—Emerald Butler playing fiddle and Amber Fults singing a seamless harmony. Rachel grew up in Cleveland and many of her songs are about her friends and family when she was growing up and in high school. Her first ep was called Glory Daze—as in feeling dazed—and like her first single “The Woulds” as in I would—her songs are filled with clever wordplay and insights from a distance. She’ll be releasing an ep of new songs this Summer. Details are on Facebook and Instagram.

  40. 56

    Pan-O-Ram Club

From the studio in the downtown Chattanooga Public Library, this session features a band of gifted songwriters called Pan-O-Ram Club. All four members of the band—singer, pianist Kathy Veazey, singer and guitarist John Rawlston, bassist and producer Dan Myers, and singer and percussionist Kathy Webb Myers-- are songwriters. While they do include a range of covers in their sets, for this session they played mostly songs they’ve written.

  41. 55

    Merry Christmas from The Library

Live In The Library Holiday Special Performance by Lady Chapel(Nessa Parrish / WUTC)Merry Christmas, everyone! From the studio in the public library, we have a joyous celebration of the season featuring first:The CCA Choir directed by Neshawn Calloway followed by Allie Levanway AKA Lady Chapel, my friends Nina Ricci and Rachel McIntyre Smith, and closing with a set by one of my favorite Chattanooga singer/songwriters Katrina Barclay with the excellent Joel Beaver Band.

  42. 54

    Stoll Vaughan

( https://www.stollvaughan.com/)From the studio on the second floor of the public library downtown this is a session from the gifted songwriter and storyteller from Lexington, Kentucky - Stoll Vaughan. The influence of Townes Van Zandt, John Prine, and Bob Dylan is evident in his writingAmerican Songwriter declared, "With deep and reflective lyrics, a sense of place and time, Stoll Vaughan is a songwriter's songwriter.” A deeply philosophical and optimistic lyricist, he wants to, as he told an interviewer, “recognize the pain, but really,” he said, “I’m trying to highlight the hope.” He’s a pretty good guitar player too. Live in the library, this is Stoll Vaughan.

  43. 53

Russell Cook & the Sweet Teeth

(Parrish, Nessa / https://russellcookart.com/epk)Russell Cook & the Sweet Teeth began as a two-guitar and drums juke-joint style trio, before gradually morphing into an exploratory rock band featuring the sparkling guitar work of Scotty Knight and ace drummer Jeremy Clark. The Sweet Teeth play new songs, traditional songs, as well as playing songs drawn from the extensive catalog of music written by Russell for the Little Country Giants. They try to push the music to see where it will go, using songs as the structure, but staying open to improvisation and playing in the moment. Russell Cook & the Sweet Teeth use sharp-edged songwriting to open up a vein of Americana that veers from electrified country blues to bombastic cosmic rock. This is Russell Cook and The Sweet Teeth.

  44. 52

    Kelsi Westfall

Before she began writing and singing songs, Kelsi Westfall was a poet. This poem, Which Way Will You Go, published on the net in 2013, alludes to the many challenges she faced after leaving home when she was still a teenager."sometimes the silver lining's thinbut if its there you count it as a winremember that for sometheir lining will never silver becomeeverything is perspectivewhen held in their place respectivesometimes you don't even know the gooduntil the good is goneyou climb a ladder toget to the topbut if you try to make it without oneyou won't make it at allsomething bettercan't really be soif theres not something worseto compare it toso if you're wondering howyou'll make it outremember that the light at the end is a fork in the roadwhich way will you go"In many ways, the poem is a precursor to the lyrics she writes now. This is her second session in the library. The first was recorded almost exactly a year ago.

  45. 51

    Reverend Freakchild

(Photo by Sal Tufano / https://www.www-reverendfreakchild.org/bio)The Reverend Freakchild has been a guest both in the studio at the radio station and the downtown public library. To be honest I prefer hosting the always garrulous Reverend in the studio in the library because he plays a lot more music when he is in the studio by himself. When he's in the radio studio with me he tends to talk more than play and while his uber-caffeinated, free-style reflections on any number of topics are always entertaining, there's no substitute for The Reverend Freakchild and his guitar. If you're familiar with him, you know what I mean, but if you're lucky enough to be hearing him unleashed in the studio for the first time prepare for the hurricane.Check him out here.

  46. 50

    Secondwave Radio

From the studio in the Chattanooga Public Library, this is a session featuring Secondwave Radio. The band is Tony Perri and Travis Avery playing guitars with Gio Giotti playing bass and drummer Cameron Fowler.

  47. 49

    Alan Shikoh

(Julie D Babb / https://www.barkinglegs.org/ourevents/alan-shikoh-an-evening-of-solo-guitar)In the studio on the second floor of the Chattanooga Public Library, our guest this week is the gifted guitarist Alan Shikoh.Alan will be playing a solo show in Barking Legs Theater on Dodds Avenue on Wednesday, November 8th. Writing about the upcoming concert, Bruce Kaplan noted that “Alan was rigorously trained in classical guitar, and that technique remains at the heart of his guitar playing. His musical interests have always been broad—he toured for several years with a metal band—and his primary project has been to apply his classical chops to jazz standards. While for most of us, the heart of jazz to explore its harmonic and melodic structures through improvisation, Alan’s investigations enrich these structures through highly imaginative compositional permutations. The results are absolutely beautiful.”To purchase tickets to see Alan's performance at Barking Legs, click here.

    The Scarlet Love Conspiracy

    Brownie Lee Hamilton

Brownie Lee Hamilton in the studio at the public library in Downtown Chattanooga.(Photo by Nessa Parrish / WUTC)"My name is Brownie Lee Hamilton. I had a speech impediment when I was young. I stuttered, had a speech impediment, couldn’t roll or pronounce my R’s, and was bullied for it but with determination and persistence. Anything can happen if you believe and have faith!I have a 6-year-old daughter named Anavay! We live in Chickamauga, Ga.…At the young age of 10 music was a part of my heritage and everyday life, starting out learning guitar seriously at 16 when Grizzly Fowler gave me my first guitar. In addition to my years of onstage experience and behind-the-scenes, technical experience, and know-how has led me up to this point to produce and record my first album."- Brownie Lee Hamilton
