Mama's Gonna Make It

Honest, funny, and real—neurodivergent moms navigating parenting, friendship, and self-growth.

    Mama’s Gonna Make It — 47.

Last time we had Jen Hamilton on, we talked all things nursing, advocacy, and her book Birth Vibes. This time? We’re just… hanging out. And honestly, it might be our favorite kind of episode. Jen is back in the studio and bringing her full, beautifully chaotic, joy-filled life with her. From raising indoor chickens (yes, diapers included) to navigating social media with millions of followers, to building a nonprofit that’s helping moms across the country—this conversation is equal parts hilarious, heartfelt, and deeply grounding. We talk about: What it actually looks like to “have it all” (hint: it’s messy and wonderful) Why Jen refuses to fit into a single “niche” online—and why you don’t have to either The behind-the-scenes of her social media presence (and how she keeps it sustainable) Parenting in the teenage years + navigating intrusive thoughts  Dream vacations (cruise people vs. not cruise people 👀) Using your platform for good—even when it makes people uncomfortable Letting people misunderstand you and calling that freedom We also dive into Jen’s nonprofit, Hot Mess Express, and how one Facebook post turned into a nationwide movement helping overwhelmed moms reset their homes—and their nervous systems—with zero judgment and lots of love. And because we like to keep it real around here, we wrap with some honest confessions about the not-so-polished parts of life (forgotten Valentines, messy houses, and struggling to shower… you know, the usual). This episode feels like sitting on the couch with friends—laughing, learning, and reminding each other that we’re all just doing the best we can. Recorded in the Such-N-Such Media Studios at Liberty Plaza in downtown Winston-Salem, we are produced by Tim Beeman for Such-N-Such Media. Theme music is by Doug Davis. Love what you hear? Mama’s Gonna Make It — 46. Find Your Birth Vibe: Advocacy, Agency & the Birth You Didn’t Plan with Jen Hamilton

Sometimes the most powerful preparation isn’t for the birth you want—it’s for the one you might actually have.  This week, we host labor & delivery nurse, advocate, and author Jen Hamilton to talk about her debut book Birth Vibes—and wow…we were not emotionally prepared (in the best way). Birth Vibes fills the void between books that explain pregnancy and parenting books. That between space? Actually bringing  your baby into the world? THIS IS THE BOOK to help you prepare for the decisions you may need to make in those important, and sometimes scary, moments.   As a nurse, Jen has spent over a decade in ER and obstetrics, supporting families through some of the most vulnerable, intense, and life-changing moments imaginable. In this conversation, she shares how her concept of “birth vibes”—a blend of your values, preferences, and vision—can help you advocate for yourself and feel grounded, even when things don’t go according to plan. We talk about: Why informed consent is more than just a signature—it’s true understanding How nurses (and patients) can balance information without overwhelm The importance of connection before checklists in medical spaces What it actually looks like to advocate for patients—even when it’s uncomfortable The reality of systemic racism in maternal healthcare and why it must be addressed Preparing not just for your ideal birth—but for the unexpected, too Jen also shares behind-the-scenes stories from writing her book (including what didn’t make it in), how her own birth experience shaped her work, and why honoring all birth stories—including loss—was non-negotiable. And we have to say…this book unlocked something for us. Whether you’re currently pregnant, supporting someone who is, or still processing a past birth experience—this conversation (and Jen’s work) offers language, clarity, and a whole lot of healing. This episode is for: Expectant parents Birth partners and support people Anyone who has ever had a complicated or confusing birth experience Healthcare providers who want to lead with more compassion and connection Anyone who loves Jen Hamilton’s humor and voice  Because at the end of the day, this isn’t just about birth—it’s about being seen, heard, and respected in your most vulnerable moments. Mama’s Gonna Make It — 45. I’ll Make the World Safe and Sound for You — Peace & Safety

Before we even get to today’s topic, Anne & Sarabeth find themselves on a meaningful side quest—talking about how we support our kids’ safety when it comes to consent and bodily autonomy. Whew…nothing like easing in with a “light” topic. From there, we explore the idea of peace (not peas 😉), inspired by a recent Peace Walk—including one we did with our own kiddos on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. And because this is us, we don’t stay in one lane for long—touching on everything from birth plans to personal finance to navigating truth in an age of AI and digital fakes. It’s a little winding, a lot real, and exactly the kind of conversation we hope makes you feel less alone. A few takeaways on peace:• Some forms of peace are a privilege.• It’s okay to take a break—for your own mental peace—when you can.• Fight for something, not just against something.• Peace is powerful—and it requires strength.• And sometimes…silence can be bought with cosmic brownies 🤣 Links:  Don’t hug Doug (He Doesn’t Like It) The Breaking News Mama’s Gonna Make It Episode 5: Dear Theo  Mama’s Gonna Make It Episode 43:Resilient Parents for Thriving Kids with Deb Armstrong Branch Walk for Peace Crayola Colors of the World Skin Tone Crayons  Work with The Podfather Tim Beeman! Mama’s Gonna Make It — 44. Grow Where You Are: Soil & Self-Compassion with Ashley Honbarrier of Happy Roots

Sometimes the hardest part of anything is getting started. Ashley Honbarrier eliminates that barrier to growing your own food with her nonprofit Happy Roots—providing therapeutic horticulture to communities of all ages, from 2 to 102 and beyond. In this episode, we talk about what happens when access meets intention… and how something as simple as a garden box can shift not just what we eat, but how we feel. Ashley shares about Earth Day Jam and how it led to the creation of Happy Roots—a nonprofit now serving schools, families, and communities through hands-on, nature-based education. We get into: how Happy Roots began and why removing barriers matters “dirt therapy” and the real mental health benefits of getting outside the power of school gardens (and why kids will try what they grow) simple, approachable ways to start gardening—especially if you feel overwhelmed what it looks like to garden with kids, communities, and across generations how growing something can build patience, confidence, and connection This conversation is a reminder that you don’t have to do it perfectly. You don’t need all the answers. And you definitely don’t need a green thumb. You just have to start.About Ashley: Ashley Honbarrier is the Founder and Executive Director of Happy Roots, a North Carolina–based nonprofit focused on school gardens, sustainable agriculture, and therapeutic horticulture. She also serves on the North Carolina School Garden Network Advisory Board and is the founder of Earth Day Jam. Mama’s Gonna Make It — 43. Why “Doing Your Best” Is Actually Enough: Resilient Parents for Thriving Kids with Deb Armstrong-Branch

If you’ve ever felt your chest tighten when your kid is upset… or like you have to fix it right now… or like you’re somehow getting it wrong if it all feels really hard—this episode is for you. We sat down with pediatric nurse and early years mental health specialist Deb Armstrong-Branch (aka HappyChild2HappyParent). This convo genuinely felt like a deep exhale. We talk about anxiety, control, bedtime battles, guilt, parental confidence, and (new to us but we LOVE it) confident disinterest.  We can all probably relate to that very real moment when you realize: you actually can’t protect your kids from everything. And maybe you’re not supposed to. About Our Guest:Debs is a specialist pediatric nurse with over 30 years of experience working with children and families—many of whom have neurodiverse needs. She’s also a mom of three, bringing both professional insight and lived experience to the table. What We Cover: Why parenting is just a different kind of hard at every stage The power of “confident disinterest” Letting kids feel hard things (without rescuing) Regulating yourself before your child Understanding temperament vs. personality Why taking care of yourself actually matters for your kids Takeaways: You don’t need to fix every feeling Your calm matters more than your control Kids need space to build resilience You’re doing the best you can with what you have Resources + Links: Deb’s Instagram: @happychild2happyparent_ Website: happychild2happyparent.com Her program: The Calm Academy Recorded in the Such-N-Such Media Studios at Liberty Plaza in downtown Winston-Salem, we are produced by Tim Beeman for Such-N-Such Media. Mama’s Gonna Make It — 42. Introducing… Season 3!

What a gift to be launching Season 3 of Mama’s Gonna Make It! In this episode, Sarabeth and Anne catch up and share life updates with listeners, resolve a few open cliffhangers from past episodes, and reflect on the new frontier of our parenting skills’ growing edges. As soon as we think we know what we’re doing, those kiddos go and level up! Tim, Anne, and Sarabeth also take some time to reflect on our most memorable episodes so far (not favorites—that’s impossible) and what made them special. We have a lot in the works for Season Three, and we’re excited to be here with you. Be sure to find us on social media for updates and to chime in—we’d love to hear what you think! Mama’s Gonna Make It — 41. Season 2 Finale

Show notes are something a little different today. Almost as I write, both Sarabeth and Anne are decorating their Christmas trees with their families, holiday songs playing, and delicious smells wafting from their respective kitchens. Despite this picturesque scene, played out over both homes on a foggy Sunday morning, holiday magic doesn’t just “happen” — it doesn’t just “magic” itself. This morning shows up for us today because a) our privileges. We are so very aware of the many privileges we walk through the world benefiting from, and how many people cannot and will not have a cozy Sunday morning like this. And b) we prioritized it. We’re not listening to our episode to prepare genuine show notes today (if we promised some links, I’m sure we’ll catch it on Monday and link in socials). The kitchen is a mess. The laundry isn’t done. Other parts of the house are a disaster. There may or may not still be a poorly patched, limb-sized hole in one bedroom ceiling and some years-old splatter paint courtesy of a smoothie-curious toddler (now FOUR) across another ceiling, just above those cozy little families making this morning a magical one. It’s never going to be perfect. For some, reaching for magical moments is far easier than for others. As we wrap Season 2 — in the midst of the chaotic, stressful, magical, grief-inducing steam train of time between Thanksgiving and Christmas — let’s lean in on a recurring theme we dove into this season: release the shame. Release the moral hierarchy. Release the perfect pictures we hold in our minds, the old versions of ourselves and those we love, and lean into being present. Even in our grief. Even in the overstimulated chaos. Even as we knowingly dive into a much-needed moment of escapism on our phones, books, or TV screens. Give yourself grace — and know that we are giving it too. Season 3 coming in 2026. Until then, know that these mamas are doing their best to soak up whatever magical moments we can between the mess, the tears, and the stark realities that our world demands we acknowledge. Love to you all this holiday season — and grace and care to you in each and every life season. Mama’s Gonna Make It — 38. Friend Chat: Growing Edges with Beth Recchio

This week we’re joined by our friend Beth Recchio for a funny and honest conversation about growing edges—those places where we’re choosing to stretch, change, and show up differently. Beth opens up about her fear of success, and we dive into what it means to grow even when it feels uncomfortable. Anne and SB share stories about self-advocacy in healthcare, while Tim vulnerably reflects on his medical history, current challenges, and the new habits he’s building to support his own health.  Of course, it wouldn’t be a Mama’s Gonna Make It episode without laughter, food talk, and a few tangents. Mama’s Gonna Make It — 37. The Practice of Becoming Yourself with Beth Recchio

In this episode, we’re joined by our friend and social media powerhouse Beth Recchio — the bold, boho, and beautifully unfiltered force behind @bethsboholife. Beth brings her full, multifaceted self to every space she enters, whether it’s gardening, home improvement, comedy, storytelling, or fashion. She’s redefining what connection and authenticity look like online (and off). We talk about the practice of becoming yourself — of letting go of the people-pleasing, acknowledging the versions of ourselves that got us here, and rejecting the call to fit neatly into a box. Beth shares that a turning point in her journey toward self-care–centered living pivoted on her motherhood, and how giving herself permission to grow has shaped her life, her art, and her family. She’s so damn proud of her son @pickinnicklawrence, herself, her hubs @matteorecchio, and her little BooperButt – and quite frankly, we are too! Expect laughter, honesty, and a few spicy words (yes, we saved our E for Beth!) as we dive into what it really means to evolve, show up fully, and bring all of who you are to the table — online, on stage, and in your own skin. Tune in for a conversation about growth, creativity, and giving yourself permission to be the ever-changing, ever-beautiful work in progress that you already are. Mama’s Gonna Make It — 36. You Ask, We Answer

In this episode, we’re answering listener questions (pause for dramatic effect: WE HAVE LISTENERS!? 😭🙌 And you have QUESTIONS!?) Cue the happy dance. 💃🕺 Keep ’em coming, friends — we love hearing from you! Here’s what we dive into: Q1: How do you even start therapy? Anne consults Mama D for advice, and we share some friend wisdom from a Lazy Genius thread. Spoiler: You don’t have to have it all figured out before you start. Q2: What if your partner doesn’t want to join? Long story short — go anyway! But listen in for the full context and how to navigate that conversation with compassion and confidence. Q3: Are we all a little hypervigilant about spotting diagnosable issues in our kiddos? We get it. None of us want to miss something that might make life harder for our kids. The takeaway? Lead with love. It’s not our job to diagnose — it’s our job to love the kid in front of us and help them navigate their world the best we can. We’ll all miss something, somewhere, sometime… and that’s okay, mama. This one’s full of heart, real talk, and a few deep breaths of solidarity. Mama’s Gonna Make It — 35. Magnetosphere, Neurodiverse Storytelling, and the Power of Indie Film with Director Nicola Rose

This week we’re joined by filmmaker Nicola Rose (@nicolarosedirects), writer and director of the new feature film Magnetosphere (@magnetospheremovie). Nicola shares the inspiration behind the film, which follows 13-year-old Maggie as she navigates first love, moving to a new town, and living with synesthesia—a condition that makes her see sounds, hear colors, and more. We talk about how Magnetosphere came to life, including the importance of representation in film, the role of a neurodiverse group of consultants and cast members, and Nicola’s own perspective as a neurodivergent creator. Nicola also dives into the film’s themes, including the transformative power of caring relationships and self-acceptance. From a toilet in the kitchen to a chaos-inciting exterminator turned Pirate King, Nicola let us in on some surprising real-life inspirations behind her film’s more humorous elements. Beyond the story itself, we spend time on the world of indie filmmaking: why low-budget films matter, the challenges and joys of bringing them to the screen, and where audiences can find and support them. Mama’s Gonna Make It — 34. It’s About What iCan Do! Let’s talk Neurotypes with Kim Shufran

In this episode, we’re thrilled to welcome local legend Kim Shufran to talk about neurotypes, the medical vs. social models of disability (and how each shifts our language, expectations, and even our parenting), and so much more. Kim designed and founded iCan House in 2008 as a place of belonging, acceptance, positivity, learning, and fun. Inspired by the unmet needs of her incredible daughter, Erica, and her passion for applying a positive lens, Kim created a community that reframes how we think about and support diverse neurotypes. With a background that includes 17 years in clinical nursing and 12 years in organizational development, Kim shaped iCan House into a unique resource that teaches social skills through clubs, provides educational opportunities, serves as a resource hub, and builds a strong support network for neurodivergent individuals and their families. Whether she’s out and about with her music-loving white cockatoo, Sam, cheering on her daughter, or continuing to guide iCan House as it grows to meet our community needs, Kim radiates wisdom and positive thinking. Don’t miss this timely episode where we deepen our understanding of neurodiversity, explore universal parenting skills, and push back against harmful narratives that undervalue or objectify difference. Mama’s Gonna Make It — 33. Don’t Be Less

In this episode, we do a little time traveling—recorded across two sessions, but woven together with one theme: Don’t Be Less. Anne and Sarabeth unpack the story behind this mantra and what it has come to mean in their friendship. With their signature mix of humor and honesty, they explore what it looks like to show up as your whole, quirky, “too-much” self—and why that shift can be so profound, especially for those of us with diverse neurotypes. It’s a reminder to stop dimming your light. Instead, find the people and spaces that invite you to show up authentically, unmask, and feel fully accepted and loved. 💛 Don’t be less. Be you. Mama’s Gonna Make It — 32. Struggle Care, Moral Neutrality, and Healthy Relationships with KC Davis

We could hardly believe it when KC Davis said yes to joining us on Mama’s Gonna Make It—because not only is she a licensed therapist, bestselling author, and wildly popular content creator, but she’s also someone we talk about a lot. KC’s compassionate, practical approach to self-care has struck a chord with millions, and her book How to Keep House While Drowning has become a lifeline for anyone moving through tough seasons of life. Her newest book, Who Deserves Your Love, expands that wisdom into the realm of relationships. In this conversation, KC brings her trademark mix of honesty and humor as we dig into: The origins of Struggle Care and its six pillars (we love a framework!) What moral neutrality is any why it matters—for us and our kids The importance of access (therapy, tools, content and more) that meet people where they are Recognizing our own patterns and extending grace, not shame Balancing accountability and healthy boundaries when it comes to our emotions and the emotions of others This one is equal parts validating and thought-provoking, with plenty of laughter along the way (and yes, we did ask KC about her most bizarre “struggle care” method). Whether you’re already a fan or just meeting KC Davis for the first time, you’ll leave this episode with a fresh perspective on what it means to care for yourself and those you love—without shame. More about KC Davis: KC’s compassionate and practical approach to self-care for those dealing with mental health, physical illness, and hard seasons of life has drawn over a million followers on social media in less than a year. Her book, “How to Keep House While Drowning” has sold over 350,000 copies and is currently an Amazon bestseller. Her new book, “Who Deserves Your Love,” brings her revolutionary perspective-shifting philosophy to the world of relationship struggles. KC Davis began her therapy journey at 16 when she entered treatment for drug addiction and mental health issues. After getting sober, she became a speaker and advocate for mental health and recovery. Professionally, KC has worked most of her career in the field of addiction in roles such a therapist, consultant, and executive director. Mama’s Gonna Make It — 30. Unfiltered Growth: the Enneagram with Liz Orr

This week we sat down with Liz Orr—author of The Unfiltered Enneagram and the voice behind @rudeassenneagram—for an eye-opening conversation about the Enneagram. Liz shares her background and her experience stumbling into the Enneagram world, and she explains why this framework for self-awareness (especially understanding our own motivations) still matters today. Producer Tim takes a typing test and Liz unpacks his results -with plenty of laughs. Anne and Sarabeth already knew their types…or so they thought! They’re doing the work to turn some of those question marks into answers (one of us with eager anticipation, the other with some grumbling).  Together we explore: ✨ What the Enneagram really is (hint: not just a personality quiz, but a fluid framework that supports our practice of self-awareness, self-compassion, and growth)✨ How it can help us grow—not just “feel seen”✨ Whether the Enneagram was designed with neurotypical brains in mind or if works for everyone✨ Why we can’t (and shouldn’t) “type” other people Liz reminds us that the shadow side of our Enneagram type doesn’t define us forever. With awareness and self-work, we can free ourselves from the defenses we’ve built and live more openly and authentically. Oh, and if you’re still wondering which type you are? Their new book, Power On: Managing Screen Time to Benefit the Whole Family, drops Tuesday, August 26, 2025—and we couldn’t be more excited to dive into it with them. ✨ In this conversation, we explore: Why it’s time to unlearn the shame around screen use and embrace screen time as neutral. As Ash stated “Shame is not empowering.” The Screen Time ABCs—Autonomy, Behavior, and Content—and how they help us rethink what matters most Practical ways to build digital literacy and safety into family life (yes, we talk parental controls and Common Sense Media!) Ash’s STAR framework (Settings, Time, Ads/App Store, Restrictions) for setting up screens to support—not overwhelm—your family How conversations about screen time can shift from stressful battles to ongoing, supportive dialogues Ash’s approach is empowering, inclusive, and refreshingly realistic. Whether you’re a parent, educator, or just trying to navigate your own relationship with screens, this episode offers frameworks, fresh ideas, and a whole lot of encouragement. Tune in and get ready to power on—in a way that works for your family. Mama’s Gonna Make It — 27. Growing Edges: The Harder Parts of Parenting

Some parenting moments stretch you to your limits—and others stretch you past them. In this episode, Sarabeth and Anne get real about the challenges that push us to grow: bedtime standoffs, running out of parenting strategies in the heat of the moment, and juggling alone time, family time, and adult time without losing our minds. Anne also shares how PCIT (Parent-Child Interaction Therapy) has expanded her parenting toolbox, from praise-heavy affirmations to the (finally, a) time-out flow chart. We dive into the chaos of bringing kids into adult spaces—weddings, fancy restaurants—where expectations often outpace their developmental stage. Our survival kit? Pick your battles, prep ahead, set and share limits, bail gracefully if needed… and if you spot a kid with a tablet at dinner, mind your own business. Through it all, we work to honor our kids’ autonomy, hold healthy boundaries, and keep showing up even when we get it wrong. Parenting is a practice—and we’re in it for the long game. Mama’s Gonna Make It — 26. A Body in Space: Intro to Occupational Therapy with Jess Irvin-Spears

Okay but… what even is occupational therapy?! In this juicy and joyfully neurospicy episode, Anne and Sarabeth sit down with Jess Irvin-Spears (OT and founder of MoonBeam Therapies Clinic) to break it all down, complete with tangents and zero shame, as we embrace the chaotic magic of neurodivergent brains info-swapping! We cover: The basics of OT (spoiler: it’s not just handwriting and fine motor!) Some OT technical concepts, like sensory seeking, sensory sensitivity, retained reflexes, etc The Pyramid of Learning and why we have to meet the bottom needs (hello regulation!) before we can ask our kids to “just focus” What we noticed at the MoonBeam Clinic during the play group therapy and what Jess saw behind the scenes in her therapist brain The chaos and beauty of setting up for our visit—ADHD-style We wrap with some real-life mom banter, Jess shares gentle wisdom for parents navigating this stuff, and we end with a list of a whole bunch more that we definitely want to talk about next time. Mama’s Gonna Make It — 25. Walking with Grief: Navigating the Journey No One Chooses

In this tender episode about navigating grief, Sarabeth and Anne open up about their own recent experiences with loss. Guided by the insights of Brené Brown’s Atlas of the Heart, we discuss different types of grief and how grief is most often associated with death, but in reality, we grieve the loss of many things we love, including missed opportunities, unmet expectations, relationships, careers, and imagined futures.  From explaining the concept of death to small children to processing our own grief and supporting others through their grief journey, we kept nothing behind closed doors in this honest and vulnerable conversation about loss. Ultimately, to love is to lose, and it takes incredible courage for us to choose to love with our whole hearts, knowing loss is inevitable.  Links:Atlas of the Heart by Brené BrownUnfu*k Yourself  by Gary John Bishop Recorded in the Omniverus Studios at Liberty Plaza, we are produced by Tim Beeman for Such-N-Such Media.Theme Music by Doug Davis.

In this episode of Mama’s Gonna Make It, we set out to learn from each other—and ourselves. We get real about those catch-all bags (or baskets… or drawers) full of random things we might need but will definitely avoid sorting. 💰ADHD Tax – The cost of being late, disorganized, or overwhelmed. 🧹 Decluttering for ADHD Brains We debate some viral decluttering questions: “Does this spark joy?” – Marie Kondo “Do I have the capacity to care for this?” “Would I clean this if it had poop on it?” (Yes, really. And it works.) 💬 Semi-Side Quest Alert: We also dive into how our stuff holds energy, from inner child comfort objects to Anne’s yearly family memory boxes. Mama’s Gonna Make It – 21. How to Bee a Mom: From NICU to New Beginnings with Lily Rosene

She’s back! In our second conversation with author, educator, and mom Lily Rosene, we explore her resilient journey of becoming a mother- one that didn’t follow the script. From spontaneous pre-term labor at 30 weeks to supporting her baby in the NICU, Lily opens up about her real, raw experience navigating a different entry to motherhood than she planned for. We talk about those first weeks and how she coped with postpartum anxiety, PTSD, and the emotional rollercoaster that followed delivery.  Lily also shares how her love of literacy and creativity helped her reclaim her identity — not just as a mom, but as an artist and storyteller. Her children’s books, How to Bee a Friend and How to Bee polite (co-created with Allyson Watwood), invites kids to engage with stories in a new way by teaching literary concepts in a fun way and  leaving space for them to become illustrators themselves. Her creativity mirrors her motherhood journey as a powerful metaphor for resilience and imagination. We talk about: 👶 The NICU journey and supporting a 30-week preemie 💔 Letting go of the romanticized birth experience 🧠 Navigating mental health: PTSD & postpartum anxiety ⏳ Understanding milestones and adjusted age 💡 Reclaiming creativity as a form of healing and identity 🐝 Lily’s children’s books 🧑‍🎨 Fostering creativity in kids and ourselves 🚶‍♀️ Taking the next step even when imposter syndrome creeps in.  Whether you’re deep in the NICU chapter, feeling lost in the newborn fog, or trying to rediscover yourself through the chaos, we see you. Mama’s Gonna Make It –19. Book-ish

Welcome to our very first Book-Ish Segment! Anne and Sarabeth—lifelong readers and narrative nerds—have been itching to dedicate an episode to the joy, function, and nuances of reading. In this conversation, we dive into our personal relationships with books: what we read, how we read, and how those habits have shifted over time. Of course, sitting in our life experiences as moms we also touch on fostering a love of reading with kiddos, and SB lends her professional experience on helping make that happen. From audiobooks to graphic novels, ratty paperbacks to digital downloads, we celebrate the many valid ways to consume stories. There’s no one “right” way to be a reader—and no genre or format too niche to count. We also explore how neurodivergence, particularly ADHD, can complicate traditional reading habits. Producer Tim, Sarabeth, and Anne share personal reflections and practical strategies—like reading while listening—to make books more accessible and enjoyable. We talk: 📖 Reading for fun vs. reading for function 🧠 ADHD and attention struggles around reading 🎧 Multi-format strategies (audiobook + text = magic!) 🌈 Removing shame from your shelf—yes, that romance novel counts. As does audio books, graphic novels, reading is reading. 🪴 Rebuilding joy and choice into your reading life and for our kids 📚 Letting go of book guilt + embracing your TBR pile your way And of course, we tackle the ultimate reader’s debate:Do you finish every book you start, or are you at peace with abandoning a story mid-read? Mama’s Gonna Make It – 18. What is Love? A Friend Chat with Thao Nguyen

In this rich and reflective episode, we welcome back our friend Thao Nguyen to talk about love in all its complexity. From the 7 types of Greek love to the Buddhist concept of metta (loving kindness, compassion, equanimity, and joy), we discuss love in many forms. Within that conversation, we explore how naming our emotions helps us understand and navigate them. We talk about anger—where it comes from, how to prevent it, and what role expectations play in our emotional lives. Together, we stumble upon our first ever MGMI framework: change, release, or communicate your expectations—a practical tool to help prevent frustration and resentment. We go deep on forgiveness, especially in relationships where differences in values or politics can be painful. Is alignment possible even when we disagree? We also ask: Who are you when no one is around? Finally, we debate affirmations: are they empowering, or just projections of what we think we (or our children) “should” be? Mama’s Gonna Make It – 13:.Showing Up – Vulnerability and Finding Your People

In this heartfelt episode of Mama’s Gonna Make It, cohosts Anne and Sarabeth dive into the power of vulnerability with Producer Tim and explore the beauty of building authentic connections. We reflect on how grateful we are for you—our listeners—who continue to show up, share your stories, and let us know when something resonates. Your responses remind us that we’re not alone (and neither are you). We open up about what it means to be our real, evolving selves and the unexpected ways connection happens when we allow others to see us as we are. We share stories of stars-aligning experiences (like Sarabeth’s unexpected author connection and navigating the world of making “mom friends”) that only happen when we’re brave enough to lean in and say hi.  Producer Tim brings in a thoughtful discussion about the power of podcasting as a tool for community and expression. Together, we reflect on where our podcast fits in the landscape—landing somewhere in the realm of health, wellness, lifestyle, and honest conversations around many topics, including (but not limited to) parenting. A few key takeaways include: Vulnerability as the key to finding your people and the connection we miss when we let fear keep us quiet.  How exploring the motivation of a kiddo’s behavior is helpful in supporting them to make positive changes The surprising way conversations (even one-sided ones!) help us find language for our own thoughts and feelings. Mama’s Gonna Make It – 12. Friend Chat with Whit – Growing Edges

Whitney Hsu joined us again for a fun and heartfelt friend chat where we talked about some of our recent growing edges! Anne reflected on the release of Episode 2, “Mom Guilt,” which served as both a humorous and humbling reminder of growth and gratitude. Whitney laid down some wisdom around the importance of allowing people to love us via tangible care. Tim shared memories from his triple bypass recovery and the love and care he received during that time. Sarabeth recalled her appreciation for those who supported her while she was in a wheelchair postpartum (even if those thank-you notes are still unsent… #ADHD). We all agreed that honoring the intent behind people’s care (whether through acts of service, food, hovering (I mean, Quality Time), or other gestures) is a meaningful way to acknowledge their love. Letting people help us deepens our connections; we build trust through vulnerability. From learning to ask for help (and receiving it without guilt or shame) to schlepping our kids, and even revisiting a bit of postal service-related trauma (I mean, growing edges 🤣), we covered it all. Tune in for a conversation that’s equal parts real talk and laughter! Mama’s Gonna Make It – 11. Labels, Excuses, and Reasons

For our first-ever guest episode, we’re joined by Whitney Hsu (@hsumanityreads) to chat about parenting kids with ADHD, recognizing certain traits in ourselves and our partners, and the power of labels—when they help, when they hurt, and why they matter. We also dive into excuses vs. reasons, what true fairness really means, and why deadlines (even the ones we make up) can actually work in our favor to be powerful motivators. Mama’s Gonna Make It – 10. The Pain and Promise of Routines

In this episode of Mama’s Gonna Make It, we’re unpacking the complicated relationship we have with routines—how do they help us, do our kids need them, and how do we make them work in a way that supports our lives without feeling constricted? We dive into the accommodations and coping mechanisms we’ve learned along the way, from structuring our days to trying to embrace flexibility when things don’t go as planned. Sarabeth reflects on how building routines has been a practice, with every day bringing a different version of “best.” Anne shares her experience on shaping sleep routines (or rather, waking routines) in her home. We also take a real look at reward systems- when they work, when they don’t, and how they can sometimes backfire. As always, we reflect on our own living and parenting practices. We discuss what’s gone well in our parenting journey and what we’d do differently if we could go back. We even talk through and problem-solve some disruptive sleep habits in real time! Mama’s Gonna Make It – 09. Something Went Sideways

Are you a meticulous planner, someone who goes with the flow, or a bit of both? In this episode, Anne, Sarabeth, and producer Tim explore the joys of planning—and the challenges that arise when things don’t go as expected. Anne dreams of being more spontaneous but finds herself deeply attached to her plans. Sarabeth envisions the future as a multiverse of infinite, semi-planned possibilities—structured yet open to change. Meanwhile, Tim takes a unique approach, scheduling spontaneity into his routine, enjoying the unknown while keeping a loose timeline in place. We also dive into journaling, organization strategies for the mental load, and how we set boundaries with our kids to carve out the time we need to start our day on the right foot. Join us for this insightful and lighthearted conversation—and let us know, are you a planner or a go-with-the-flow kind of person? Mama’s Gonna Make It – 08. From Endure to Enjoy

In Episode 7, Anne introduced a personal challenge in her journey of self-growth and motherhood: shifting from survival mode to endurance mode—and ultimately, from simply enduring life to truly enjoying it. In this episode, we dive deeper into that transition, exploring the rough, raw edges of the privilege that is parenting. Anne shares how self-care and intentionality helped flip the switch toward embracing life more fully. We discuss practical ways to make pain points more fun and how small, routine moments can become special: ✨ Moody Movie Bath Night? Yes, please!✨ Turning cleanup time into a game? Sign me up!✨ Broccoli = Baby Trees? If it works for you, congrats! (LOL)✨ Ice cream for breakfast? Bring it on—hello, frozen fruit and veggie smoothies! Of course, our conversation detoured into food—how we approach getting our kids to eat nutritious meals without creating pressure or labeling foods as “good” or “bad.” And somehow, we ended up on the topics of Costco Nap magic and Halloween, too. Enjoy this candid, heartfelt conversation as Anne and Sarabeth navigate parenthood, self care, growth, and the little joys that make all the difference. Mama’s Gonna Make It – 07. What’s In a Name?

In this go-with-the-flow episode of Mama’s Gonna Make It, Sarabeth, Anne, and Producer Tim take an unexpected dive into the world of names. Anne finally learns Sarabeth’s name, and they all laugh over the name change process (quite a feat for anyone to navigate, but we assert it’s especially challenging as a person with ADHD). From there, the conversation turns tender as they share the stories behind their own children’s names and how they came to be. Producer Tim opens up (quite candidly) about the unforgettable moment he became a father, and the group takes on the ever-debated topic of gender reveal parties- are they a must or a bust? By the end, they arrive at the usual Mama’s Gonna Make It philosophy: as long as it’s not causing harm – however you name, reveal, or roll, you do you, boo. Mama’s Gonna Make It – 06. Gentle Parenting (is a terrible name)

After much discussion, we have concluded that “Gentle Parenting” is a misleading name for a parenting approach that emphasizes a child’s personhood while also upholding boundaries and following through with predictable consequences. In this episode, we explore what gentle parenting really means—validating emotions, setting limits, and implementing consequences with respect. We also share our personal experiences, discuss the power of apologies in parenting, and break down how to balance compassion with authority. And when in doubt? Take a cue from teachers—they’re often the best example of “gentle parenting” in action! Mama’s Gonna Make It – 05. “Dear Theo”

In this sincere episode of Mama’s Gonna Make It, we take inspiration from the lyrics of Dear Theodosia by Lin-Manuel Miranda and the children’s book The Breaking News by Sarah Lynn Reul to explore the profound impact of world events and the news on our kids. We reflect on how differences in opinions about running the world often stem from a shared desire to create a safe, hopeful future for our children, even when perspectives on how to get there are vastly different. We touch on the division in our society, discussing how we can do better as adults to model kindness, understanding, and unity for the next generation. Finally, we explore the idea that the responsibility of bringing joy and light shouldn’t fall solely on those to whom it comes naturally—often our children—and that even the most uplifting people sometimes need support, too. Join us for a poignant, honest conversation about holding and supporting one another through hard times, dealing with challenges as adults, and guiding our children through difficult times. Mama’s Gonna Make It – 04. Big Feelings

In this episode, we dive into the world of big feelings—ours, our kids’, and how we try to navigate it all with grace. We open up about the challenges of processing our own emotions while guiding our children through theirs and modeling a full spectrum of feelings while making it clear that they’re not responsible for carrying the weight of our adult stress or struggles. Mama’s Gonna Make It – 02. Mom Guilt

In this episode of Mama’s Gonna Make It, we’re tackling the all-too-familiar weight of mom guilt—the nagging feelings of not being enough, whether it’s not being clean enough, fun enough, artsy enough, or just enough. We get real about the pressure to meet impossible standards and explore how some of this guilt might just be plain old guilt—not necessarily tied to being a mom. Along the way, we remind ourselves (and you!) of the unique strengths and magic we bring to the table and how those superpowers can offset the things we don’t always excel at. Life is messy, and we’re all juggling so much—we can’t do it all, and that’s okay. By the end of the episode, we land on a powerful truth: practicing gratitude might just be the antidote to the guilt that weighs us down. Let’s embrace our magic and focus on what really matters.
