ANGLO PODCAST/ Fomo
Hey there, and welcome to Anglo Podcast , the show where we dive deep into the psychology behind everyday behaviors. I’m your host, Marco, and today we’re talking about something that affects almost all of us — FOMO, or the Fear of Missing Out. FOMO is that anxious feeling you get when you think others are having rewarding experiences without you. It’s often triggered by social media — scrolling through Instagram or TikTok and seeing friends at parties, on vacations, or celebrating milestones. Suddenly, your quiet night at home feels… less exciting. According to a 2023 report by the American Psychological Association, nearly 56% of social media users in the U.S. reported feeling FOMO regularly. And among young adults aged 18 to 30, that number jumps to 71%. But FOMO isn’t just about envy. It’s connected to anxiety, low self-esteem, and even depression. When we constantly compare our lives to the highlight reels of others, we can end up feeling isolated or inadequate. A study published in Computers in Human Behavior found that people who spent more than 2 hours a day on social media were significantly more likely to experience FOMO — and that it was correlated with poor sleep and higher stress levels. So how do we deal with it? Psychologists suggest practicing JOMO — the Joy of Missing Out. That means being present in the moment and grateful for where you are, even if it’s not picture-perfect. Digital detoxes, mindful scrolling, and gratitude journaling are all proven ways to reduce FOMO and boost emotional wellbeing. That’s it for today’s episode. If you’ve ever felt FOMO — and let’s be real, we all have — know that you’re not alone. Being intentional with your time and attention can make a big difference.
