Miles Ahead: Strength for The Inner Life
by Dr. Miles Salisbury
What does it actually mean to lead, provide, and heal in today’s world? Most of us are taught to "handle it all," but the cost is often burnout, emotional numbness, or a loss of drive. Miles Ahead is where mental health meets physical health to explore how we move from simply surviving to actually gaining ground.Hosted by Dr. Miles Salisbury, we dive into the topics that define our modern experience: the "wall of gray" in depression, the smoldering exhaustion of burnout, and the complex path of the "wounded healer"—those who care for their families and communities while navigating their own

Connor Beaton: Facing Pain-A Journey into Men's Work
Can we truly find strength in the parts of ourselves we’ve spent a lifetime trying to hide?Welcome back to the show. Today, I’m sitting down with someone who has become a mentor and a guide for many men—including myself. Connor Beaton is the founder of Man Talks and the author of the powerful book, Men’s Work: A Practical Guide to Face Your Darkness, End Self-Sabotage, and Find Freedom. In this episode, we pull back the curtain on the "unspoken" side of the male experience. We explore why so many of us feel like we’re walking through life with cement blocks on our feet—carrying the weight of childhood hurt, career failures, and relational dysfunction—all while pretending we’ve got it under control. Key themes we discuss include:Alchemy of Suffering: How avoiding pain doesn't make you stronger; it makes you fragile. True strength comes from moving toward your suffering and learning to alchemize it into meaning. The Powerlessness Journey: Why a man who hasn't experienced a journey of powerlessness will often grow up to abuse power.Pseudo-Initiations: In the absence of traditional rites of passage, many modern men unconsciously "nuke" their lives—sabotaging jobs or marriages—just to see if they can survive the wreckage. The Shadow & The Ego: Understanding that your ego is simply a collection of predictable patterns. Changing your identity requires questioning these patterns and making the "unconscious conscious."We also tackle a question I get constantly from women: How do I help the man I love without mothering him? Connor offers a perspective that is "jet fuel" for men. Instead of offering ultimatums or diagnosis, he explains how women are often a "permission card holder."Finally, we discuss the transition from the Logos (rational, black-and-white thought) to the Direct felt experience. Most men live from the neck up, but true emotional sovereignty lives in the body. We talk about how to bridge that gap and why it’s essential for high-performance—whether you're a father or a Wall Street trader.Takeaways for the "Work":Confession is the first step: Admitting the dysfunction or pain you are carrying is the only way to stop it from directing your life.Weakness isn't the enemy: In war and in psychology, ignoring your weaknesses is a surefire way to get "flanked."Pattern Recognition: Your identity is just a mass of behavioral patterns. If they aren't serving you, you have the power to consciously choose new ones.YouTube ChannelCoaching and Counseling with MilesPodcast IGWork with Connor00:00 Introduction to Men's Work and Pain07:07 The Role of Pain in Masculinity10:55 Navigating Midlife Transitions19:40 The Importance of Confession and Vulnerability23:31Supporting Men in Their Journey30:29 Connecting Mind and Body Through Breath39:3 7 The Energy of Emotions42:06 The Impact of Touch on Boys44:57 Understanding Emotional Intensity in Boys49:56 Generational Trauma and Emotional Resilience52:58 The Tyler Durden Complex58:59 The Collapse of the Archetypal Father01:04:43 Navigating Modern Relationships01:10:00 Emotional Labor and Connection01:10:25 The Importance of Male Connection01:11:12 Navigating Relationships and Boundaries01:12:11 Embracing the Villain Archetype01:16:58 Facing Hidden Aspects of Self01:20:02 Understanding Grief and Moving Forward01:24:40 Rebuilding Trust After Trauma01:30:39 Choosing to Grieve01:33:09 Overcoming Negative Patterns as a Parent01:37:47 Managing Expectations and Disappointments

Josh and Dave go to Israel and Palestine
Josh is back on the podcast again, and we bring on our friend, Dave Smith, who is a well traveled and well read historian, and all around renaissance man. These two decided it would be fun to go against the state department's travel advisory and go into an active war zone. For Josh, this isn't new, except this time he had to pay for it vs being paid. For Dave, this also wasn't his first rodeo. We get into what they both saw firsthand prior to the recent cease fire deal, and what is different than the news outlets report vs what they experienced. What they thought of the culture, and the nuance upon nuance of a very complicated history, and the things that surprised them and left them in awe. Dave and josh also give their two cents on what could be done going forward to help peace last. We also get into the existential psychology of the human condition and other fascinating topics. VICTORY MONDAY! Also, how sports connects men and how to go deeper.
This is a spur of the (big moment) minisode brought about by the Eagle's HUGE win last night. I thought I'd take some time to relish in this but also use the moment to talk about the great connector for men, AKA, sports, and how we can move to more conversations of depth, and ultimately closer friendships. If you are female and have a man in your life who struggles to find male friendships or talk to men more, this one is for them. If this short episode helps anyone, please forward it on! I will do a deeper dive on this subject at some point as it is very rich. In the meantime, Go Birds!

Phil and Miles give an After Action Review for Josh about their recent seminar with Duey Freeman and Traver Boehm (from the ManUncivilized Podcast, book, and movement), titled, How Best to Work with Men. The seminar was filled with both clinicians and curious folk alike, both men and women seeking how best to support the men in their personal lives and professional settings. Miles and Phil talk about their key takeaways, what they learned, and what personally came up for them. This seminar is highly recommended to anyone interested in men's work, their relationships with men, their sons, uncles, father, grandfather's and how to locate and cultivate heathy masculinity and heal/grow attachment wounds, or wounds of "contact" as Duey likes to say. Pain and Perspective
How to work with physical and psychological pain. The first Noble Truth of Buddhism has many translations, the one we like is "life involves suffering". "Pain is available to everyone." The discussion today was around pain, how we can choose to perceive it in order to best work with it (or the opposite) and to find a lesson or two, and grow from it (or the opposite). This was a more informal episode, with less of an agenda, however the listener will still profit from the conversation. If you are going through a hard time right now emotionally or physically or both, or have in the past (or plan to in the future-because we all are not exempt from pain), this discussion will likely resonate and help guide you to a trailhead on your path. https://milessalisburylpc.com https://www.joshsabraw.com https://www.instagram.com/miles.graham.salisburyphd/ https://www.instagram.com/joshsabraw/

Part 3: The problem of delusion and dissonance
PDF Download In our final discussion of the plight of men and health outcomes, we end on the problem of delusions, misinformation, and distracted attention. Most people do not have a solid sense of what their physical potential is, because they (us, as both Miles and I have experienced varying degrees of this) don't have a clear perception of what actions we are truly taking on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. We not only have fuzzy and unclear health objectives and processes, but we also have fuzzy and unclear visions of what we look like in the mirror, how many steps we take, how much we eat and sleep, and how hard (or easy) it might be to change. We talk about how men delude themselves, and what simple steps you can take today to become aware of your actions and what it takes to "get healthy". Hormones and Aging (What's wrong with men? Part II)
In today's episode Dr Miles and Josh delve a bit deeper into the obstacles that men face when tackling their own mental and physical health and today is the big topic of hormones and aging. Testosterone in the average male does peak in their 20s, but that doesn't mean that you have to peak. It's ok if you have a renaissance of vitality and energy in your 40s and 50s and it doesn't take injections of exogenous hormones! We address the common experiences of men trying to diet and exercise the way they did in their 20s, why this falls short, and how we can continue to improve our physical fitness despite our advancing age. Much of this advice can apply to women too, although a more nuanced discussion about men's and women's hormones would be needed in future. How hormones get blamed, and what is behind the fat, tired, and out-of-shape men in their midlife crises, is the discussion for today. https://milessalisburylpc.com https://www.joshsabraw.com https://www.instagram.com/miles.graham.salisburyphd/ https://www.instagram.com/joshsabraw/

What's Wrong with Men and Why Can't they Change? Part I
In this episode, we discuss men's struggles in terms of health and economic outcomes, as well as social struggles like lack of dating participation. The current trend is an alarming 4 times the likelihood of suicide, as well as poorer graduation rates, employment rates, and economic prospects. When it comes to the health conversation, men are less likely to have a primary care provider, less likely to visit the doctor, and less likely to purchase self-development books or programs, meaning not only are their health and economic prospects worsening, they are also not investing in themselves to arrest this dive. Today we crack open the biggest struggle with self-awareness and self-management including hormonal and physiological differences in the brains of men and women and how this impacts empathy, connection, and self-compassion. Dr. Ray Doktor, Author of All it Takes is One
Dr. Ray Doktor helps Josh cope with relationship issues. What's it about: Do you have the ability to check in with yourself as to how you show up, including your own definition of love for yourself? Dr. Ray compares emotional training to the physical training of Bruce Lee who has a higher level of commitment to being the best martial artist alive. Having a clear process to sharpen your own physical and emotional awareness is critical to creating the connected life you desire for yourself. How will the listener benefit: Cultivating presence and self-awareness will allow you to parse the information coming to you at any one moment, discern what is useful and valuable, and decide how to respond. This allows you to get out of your way, stop "cock-blocking" yourself (or women, the female equivalent!), and show up as a better man, woman, partner, and friend. Phil Horning-Is this getting in the way of your relationships?
Phil Horning returns. In this episode, we discuss how we get wounded in relationships and how we heal in relationships. The relief that we feel being seen in our pain and our struggles. How this is comforting and can aid the healing process. "I believe you, that does suck" is all that is required. Josh covers stillness and reconciliation including recapitulation, the process of teasing apart your experience to summarize the mistakes, lessons, and most importantly the learning or behavioral change from your own life. This was largely the focus of James Wedmore's Next Level retreat this past week. Phil reveals part of his attempts at repairing a damaged father/son relationship with his dad, who has demonstrated the willingness to acknowledge his own shortcomings. He shares an important connecting tool called attunement, which is the process of meeting someone where they are emotionally, energetically, and philosophically. Not to endorse, condone, or change someone, but to simply be with them in a way that helps them feel understood. Learning the value of stillness, clarity, attunement, and recapitulation will help you drop your baggage and engage more fully in your relationships. https://www.instagram.com/miles.graham.salisburyphd/ https://www.instagram.com/joshsabraw/ https://milessalisburylpc.com https://www.joshsabraw.com https://www.instagram.com/the_grounded_warrior https://www.thegroundedwarrior.com Phil Horning Previous Podcast Episode - Journey of a Maturing Man Fury STIM, RJ Pasin All my life Foo Fighters The Anthem Good Charlotte

Hope Part 3: Pathway Problems
Pathway, the "HOW" episodes The biggest problem that arises to interfere with hope is the lack of a "pathway" to the goal, be it love, career, or inner peace. Today we look at why that is. What's it about: Don't let the How, get you down. The mind, especially of smart and proactive people is very adept at finding problems. Our rapid-fire emotional brain will then turn those obstacles into reasons why the path will not work and needs to be fine-tuned to create opportunities from all these problems. What is possible is typically just the marketing from folks selling solutions. The path of least resistance is the pathway that other people choose for you, which discourages dreaming and creative thinking. How will the listener benefit: Learn how resourcefulness provides more opportunities than resources often do. Learn how to identify who has done what you are setting out to do. Ask them how they did it. Meta Version-Ask the industry leader or category creator. Not just a coach, but a coach specific to what exactly you are trying to create. The ability to let go of resistance and baggage is a key skill to traveling towards your goals and one of the biggest variables to creating the life that you actually want to lead. Key Talking Points, Key Stories, Key Questions" Pathway to Become a Millionaire example. Josh talks about dealing with the emasculating shame of not being able to support his partner's dreams, and how he continues to work with that.
