Bibbs account not only revealed the grotesque reality of the man-destroying system but also conveyed the profound sense of helplessness tied to perpetual bondage. Acknowledging the prevalence of other slave narratives, Bibb believed the distinctiveness of his experiences offered a glaringly honest perspective on the sins of the nation. His journey led him to Canada, where he founded the first black newspaper, Voice of the Fugitive, in 1851.
