“Baba, how does one become a Bayen (witch)?” Bhagirath asks his father Malinder near the dead lake as the shadow of his estranged mother looms over him. The recollecting of who his mother was and how she was ostracized as a witch from the Dom community in this story by Mahasweta Devi, is the unfolding of the myth of Bayen and the reality of witch-hunt. What emerges in the exchange between father and son, is the painting of Chaandidasi Gangadasi Bayen and her inner landscape (mann). We meet Chaandi through her son’s eyes and it is in this telling that the witch-hunt becomes more than a news report.The fictive nature allows the story to be a reflective medium, for us to feel and imagine Chandi, Malinder and Bhagirath as they navigate through all that goes into the making of a witch.This story was originally written in Bengali by an activist and writer Mahashweta Devi in 1976. In this new episode of Bolti Kahaniyan, Dipta Bhog narrates ‘Hekdi’, a story by writer Vijaydan Detha. This story is taken from the Hindi translation of his anthology ‘Batan Ri Phulwadi’ published by Rajasthani Granthagar. This story was told by the river to the waves, the waves to the shores, the shores to the winds, the winds to Biiji and by Bijji to us. Bijji, aka Vijaydan Detha, is a folk storyteller in the village and has a treasure trove of Rajasthan’s folktales.In the story, when a washerwoman helps him, Thakur starts swearing at her instead of being grateful. We are turning an inward eye to look at our mental experiences, and how they intersect with societal structures. In an attempt to move away from pathological and clinical readings and move towards lived experiences, our podcast series Mann Ke Mukhaute interweaves fictional stories and experiential voice notes. We have tried hard and not been able to find the English word for ‘mann’ - the Hindi word that brings together brain, mind and heart, and hints at an intuitive inner truth. In the third episode of this podcast series, we address Care Work. Care Work is finally being recognised as emotional and physical labour, and its deep connection with gender are being investigated academically and socially. But what do caregivers themselves think of their work? We talked to Meena, Parmeshwar, Anna, Neelima and Bindu about their role as caregivers, and they looked around and said: “Yeh sab saaf rakhna, yaha se hum shuru karte hai par safai dikhti kahan hai!’” [It starts with keeping everything clean, but the cleanliness never shows.] Who is expected to take care and what happens to their mental health? What is the language of their mann as they take on this work? Does a gendered and caste-ist lens prescribe the role of care-giving to some people and not to others? We explore these questions with the story Maine Saaf Kiya Tumhara…- a transliteration of the original story I Cleaned the - by Kanya D'Almeida, published in Granta.
