Tracy Pham on NO Language Barriers - Let Challenges Become Advantages
‘Don’t think you’re the minority in the place. Think about what you can bring to the table.’----Tracy Pham ‘It is what it is.’ That is one of the attitudes to embrace in any situation often when things don’t appear to one’s advantage. Yet, there are always people who are able to recognize the blessing behind every challenge. Even fewer people have the courage and capacity to embrace such an outlook to empower not only themselves, but others they identify with. As our guest speaker Tracy well said, we must first be the change we want to see by upgrading what we think. And that what enabled her to achieve what she has to earn her place on this podcast: With a background in Media & Communications, Tracy Pham, a migrant from Vietnam since 2013, is a passionate advocate for change in the realms of community empowerment, particularly within culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities. As a dedicated member of the Australian Vietnamese Women Association, Tracy channels her commitment to community empowerment by providing media support to various projects, including Age Care services, Family & Children initiatives, Training programs, Family Domestic Violence Prevention, and Gambling Counselling. These efforts aim to promote the health and well-being of migrants and refugees. Tracy’s impact extends to her role as a Board committee member for Meld Community since 2020, actively contributing to the development of a healthy international student community in Victoria and fostering their integration into Australian life and society with respect. In her free time, Tracy lends her voice to Magnify magazine, a quarterly digital publication that recently received the Tech Diversity Awards in the Marketing, Media, and Advertising category. Tracy’s contributions celebrate inspiring women of colour in STEM, breaking barriers, and making a difference. (Follow Tracy on LinkedIn) In this episode, we will take you through: - How language learning benefits communication skills and character development - The power of including others in our motivation to master a language - The importance of reaching out to expand social network and support in a foreign country. - Leveraging cross-cultural connections to promote one’s cultural heritage And more. Bonnie Chi on No Language Barriers (Part 2) - Breaking The Lowest Ceilings
“You don’t need to be someone in order to do something.” —Bonnie Chi How often do you wish we could be more ‘like’ the mentors and role models we admire to achieve our goals more easily? How often do you also decide not to do something that people around you don’t choose due to the perceived risks and barriers? One of the greatest relationship secrets I’ve learnt is that every single person in your life is your mirror. What this means is that others are always reflecting parts of your consciousness back to you, allowing you to see yourself, to grow and to change your beliefs about who you are and about other people. The qualities you most admire in others are part of your consciousness and the same goes for the qualities you dislike. If you see those around you behaving like the victims and perpetrators of the commonly quoted bias and barriers, such as glass ceiling and bamboo ceiling, it is exactly because you also consciously believe in the existence of such limits and behave accordingly. To change anything in your experiences and relationships, you must be the change you want to see. And this is the core message in the second part of my dialogue with Bonnie Chi: Associate Director from NAB and frequent speaker and career strategist challenging the next generation to reinvent their career with unconventional strategies. Made in Hong Kong and now further rooted in Australia with her expansive migrant journey, Bonnie actively advocates for 'breaking the bamboo ceiling' whilst staying culturally diverse by choice and by love. She believes everyone - of different colours, nationalities, races, or ethnicities, deserves equal chance to present their unique, best self and thrive in their dreams. (Follow Bonnie on LinkedIn) In this episode, Bonnie and I will explore: Unconventional approaches to construct and deconstruct the lowest ceilings for ourselves How to hand-pick mentors and role models and distinguish ourselves from them Discover our own paths instead of following the herd for ‘security’ and conformity Powerful habits to constantly prepare ourselves to take on opportunities And more. Bonnie Chi on No Language Barriers (Part 1) - Ride The Waves Of Confidence Across Cultural Landscape
“You don’t need to be someone in order to do something.” —Bonnie CHi Do you ever feel your English is not as good in reality compared to your education and how others typically perceive you based on your grades and what you have already achieved in an English-speaking environment? We are all not immune to imposter syndrome and in and beyond the use of a foreign language, each of us may be fighting an inner battle usually unknown to others, however competent and confident we usually appear in front of them. In the same context, there is a common notion that confidence comes from familiarity. From my experience, aside from deliberate practice in settings unfamiliar to us, we can also gain more confidence with the reference of the experience and lessons from other people similar to us. In this spirit, I am pleased to present the first guest interview on No Language Barriers in 2024, with a Multilingual Connector who speak more than 10 language and to earn her place on this podcast, has re-established herself in several continents and cultural landscapes, leveraged such experience to emerge as a career strategist and panellist as a recent migrant in Australia. She is Bonnie Chi. Bonnie is a devoted Compliance and Risk Management professional with 7 years of steadfast experience in combating Financial Crime. She’s now working as an Associate Director at NAB & focusing on their Third-party service suppliers’ compliant in Cyber security. She is driven to uplift our next-gen workforce and amplify barefoot kick-starters’ inner strength and potential – as an emerging, unconventional Career Strategist. Facing countless rejections and visa hurdles when she returned to Australia in 2017 for her second master degree, indeed it took a long way for her to bounce back stronger in resilience, to establish her career foundation and head towards where she landed today. Proudly and humbly flourishing in adversity and striving to set a precedent, Bonnie first set her foot at the doorstep with a Big 4 bank by simply knocking on doors. (whilst still on Student Visa) Being able to elicit convos in 13 languages, Her intercultural intelligence has definitely done her favour to brighten up people’s lives with her animated interpersonal personality while blending in the neighbourhood & community; can’t wait to see where this unconventional path would lead Bonnie to her next exciting destinations. (Follow Bonnie on LinkedIn) In this episode, we’ll discover how Bonnies rides the wave of confidence as she keeps rising up to new challenges in a foreign context: The essence of connecting before converting opportunities The ‘human intelligence’ that AI cannot replace in fostering genuine connections Expanding and managing personal identities in different cultural and linguistic contexts Integrating networking and personal branding with language learning And so much more.
