The theme for Azorius (white-blue) in OTJ is 'Take a Break'. The idea being to take a break on your turn and cast spells on your opponent's turn. And it has been a bit hit-and-miss. There are a couple great payoffs for taking a break but there are traps as well. As with most blue strategies outside of Simic (which is really a green strategy anyway), I've had the most success treating it as a spellslinger archetype with a low creature count. Focus on flyers and out tempoing your opponent with disruption from blue. In this episode I also go over the top performing cards, what traps to avoid, and when to take certain cards during a draft. Many of the signposts feel like 'Orzhov Sacrifice' would have been more fitting, but you do have access to a lot of removal so 'attrition' is fairly accurate. Focus on removal and flyers and take advantage that the signpost uncommon, Ruthless Lawbringer, is underdrafted. To accomplish this task, you need spells that draw cards so you can keep double spelling. I've had the most success with this archetype by treating it as a spellslinger with a low creature count. The theme for Golgari (black-green) in OTJ is Creatures in the Graveyard. As with most sets, it plays out more as a midrange deck with some graveyard synergies as a plan B. Green has great midrange threats while black has excellent instant speed removal. Also, don't be afraid to extend the later part of your curve as aggro has struggled a bit at the beginning of OTJ. This is the most drafted and most winning archetype in week 1. Green is the best color and has some amazing midrange threats. White has great removal with several Oblivion Rings. And the signpost uncommon, Miriam, Herd Whisperer, can make some truly oppressive starts if you have mount synergies. However, many people have been unsuccessful at getting Insidious Roots and Chalk Outline to actually work. The archetype splashes well, especially for blue into the Sultai space, and you'll want to focus on extending the game with defensive creatures and removal. You want disguise creatures, which all have power 2 or less, but try to focus on keeping your disguise cost low. The theme for Rakdos (black-red) in MKM is Suspect Aggro and, again, it's rather accurate. However, Repeat Offender is a major trap and one of the leaders among "Total Wins Destroyed". You'll want to focus on starting on turn 1, especially since you can catch people not doing anything until a disguise creature on turn 3. You have plenty of removal to choose from and should prioritize the removal that plays around ward 2. As we reach the later part of the set Boros has been overdrafted so I expect Dimir to become more viable. You'll want to focus on removal, especially removal that gets around ward, and clue tokens/card advantage. Explore doesn't perform better in Simic. It's a good mechanic that works in any archetype. I do think it makes a decent back up plan if you get cut out of a color during the draft. Welcome to episode 60 of No Rares Required! A weekly podcast focused on strategies for drafting the current set: Lost Caverns of Ixalan. Gruul has the 3rd highest winrate on 17lands. It's rather straight forward to draft, that is, if the cards are available. The archetype can lack good 2 drops and leans heavily on some uncommons. I go over the top performing cards and when you should try to take them.

Rakdos has the lowest winrate on 17lands. And this is because many of the cards that fall into the archetype's theme of triggering descended are a trap. I think there is still a viable strategy if you focus on a small game.

Golgari has one thing going for it. And that is reanimating big dinosaurs for cheap. And caves work well in the archetype. This week, I decided to go more in-depth with how I analyze an archetype and mix up how I present my favorite cards. Dimir is the top performing black archetype, but black has not been performing well. Black’s strength is single-point removal, and in a set where cards are multiple cards in one, you fall behind trying to answer your opponents threats one for one. This is why I recommend trying to be as aggressive as you can instead of taking a controlling approach.

The second frontrunner in week one of Lost Caverns of Ixalan is Izzet Pirates. Giving up the evasion of white flyers, and midrange craft strategies, for pirate synergies and aggressive red removal and combat tricks. My most successful strategy has been tempo and it isn't uncommon for me to have a low curve, 15 or 16 lands, and very few cards that cost 4 or more.
