Off the Clock w/Jon Eks

My name is Jon Eks and I spent more than a decade talking to people about work on the award-winning Jon of All Trades Podcast. I’m sick of talking about work. I want to talk about everything else in our lives. Men are traditionally not good at this. So, I’m talking to people I love, respect, and admire. I’m trying to embody the axiom “Be the change you want to see in the world.” Expect candor, vulnerability, profanity, and a wide range of topics.

Shepard Is Efficient with his Time

On this episode of Off the Clock, I’m joined by my friend Shepard, who was a guest on the old show, and who called me out of the blue for the first time in years a few weeks ago. Here’s some of what we talk about:First Question: How did you expect me to react when you called me?the importance of production design in moviesthe Fight Club concept of “single serving friends” as a metaphor for podcasting and how if we’re not helping each other, then what’s the point?how did Shepard start producing independent films (it involves Cuba!) and how does he make time for whimsy and creative pursuits“interested is interesting” returns to the show as a concept (shoutout Nate Lundy) with talk about Quentin Tarantino, Roger Ebert, Roland Barthes, the Colorado Avalanche & morea shoutout to Band Name Bureau by Kyle Ryan and sharing your compliments with creatorswe spend some time talking about Governor Jared Polis and how most Colorado politicians are “high in content” which is an interesting way of putting itShepard turns the tables on me and starts asking me questionshow have I intentionally curated my career?we reminisce about These Things Matter and I get into my origin story for the first time in a whilewhy I’m a better entrepreneur than I am a salaried employee (spoiler: I’m a pain in the ass)“are you the type of person who plans 5 or 10 years ahead, or are you the person who focuses on the work and people immediately around you?” I LOVE this questionhow do I manage my time? weirdly, I don’t have a good answer for this even though I’m pretty effective at it!Theme song by Sorry SweetheartLogo by Nebulus Visions.Produced by Deft Communications.Engage with the show on Facebook, Instagram and Bluesky. Recorded at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science.

#OTCQuickie: Where the Hell Have I Been?

#OTCQuickies are mini solo episodes where I address a question or a topic in service of trying to be a good dude in the world. Today's topic is:Where the Hell Have I Been? It's been a month since I did a show. I haven't kept up with TTROC and the reason for both is that I've been sick as hell off and on for the last 4 weeks. There have been a handful of bright spots here and there, but any energy I have has gone to my professional life and my family, and then I mostly just want to lie down. I provide more explanation -- along with my thoughts on this weird ass fucking winter, weather-wise -- in this mini-episode.Secondly, there are too many podcasts anymore. I've been doing this for 12 years and there are more now than ever, which makes finding your own motivation and how to add value to a bloated cultural discourse daunting at best, dispiriting at worst. Because a fucking podcaster is currently heading up the FBI and using our money to party with the USA hockey team like he's some Make-a-Wish kid. More on that type of thing in here too.I'm feeling better and I'll be back soon. But here's like 6 minutes of audio if you're interested. #OTCQuickie: The Ugliness of Ultrawealth

#OTCQuickies are mini solo episodes where I address a question or a topic in service of trying to be a good dude in the world. Today's topic is:The Ugliness of UltrawealthFueled by two things I read this morning, and in stark contrast to a "Great Guys Lunch" I recently attended, I weigh in on why I find ultrawealth (a.k.a. billionaires) so distasteful and detrimental to society. 1. Today's New York Times Morning Newsletter has a small capsule article a little more than halfway down about how venture capitalists are squeezing volunteer fire departments for more money after acquiring the software they use to track incidents. You can find that newsletter here.2. On Hamilton Nolan's Substack "How Things Work," he has a piece called "Abominations of Capital: Forcing a price on priceless things." It is ostensibly about a piece of art by Jean-Michel Basquiat that is owned by a billionaire named Ken Griffin, but cuts at extreme wealth in an interesting way. Ultrawealth, in my opinion, should not be viewed aspirationally, but as a malignant mental disorder that deserves to be ridiculed, scorned, and legislated out of existence. #OTCQuickies are mini solo episodes where I address a question or a topic in service of trying to be a good dude in the world. Today's topic is:Grow Up and Answer the PhoneI feel like three fucking times a day I see a meme or a joke or a post about how people are afraid to answer the phone or how they never make calls or how anxiety-riddled phone calls are. My response: Grow up and get over yourself. What kind of dork ass baby are you? Here are some reasons to be not afraid of the phone:1. Talking to a friend is a quick dopamine hit.2. Getting comfortable talking to strangers gets you great customer service, makes you fearless, and helps deepen your empathy for all sorts of people.3. This self-imposed isolation has made our politics worse, coarsened the way we interact with each other, and been detrimental to society as a whole. So get over yourself and don't be afraid of talking on the phone. Theme song by Sorry Sweetheart.Logo by Nebulus Visions.Produced by Deft Communications.Engage with the show on Facebook, Instagram and Bluesky.

Today's topic is:Get Over Yourself and See a Damn DoctorI went from trying to choke to death in my sleep 50+ times an hour to having only 5 obstructive apnea events per night. I am no longer in the express lane hurtling toward an early death, and the reason I'm not is because I made the conscious choice to go see a doctor and fix what was wrong with me.On this #OTCQuickie, I share my insights from grappling with sleep apnea, encourage my fellow dudes to get over themselves and go to a doctor. Seriously, the doctor already knows you're fat and that you drink too much, deal with it. I also kick off this show with a brief discussion about Charlie Kirk and why you won't see me weighing in on him in public, gun culture in general, the incendiary rhetoric that comes from the very top in this country, and why it's okay to sit some of this cultural dialogue out. Theme song by Sorry Sweetheart.Logo by Nebulus Visions.Produced by Deft Communications.Engage with the show on Facebook, Instagram and Bluesky.

Here’s some of what we talk about:First Question: Why am I wrong about A.I.?Jay tries to convince me of his belief that there will be a handful of companies worth billions of dollars running everything, and that everything else will be automation (needless to say, I don’t agree – but we dive into it extensively!)a fake comedic pitch he did online where a friend of his tries to convince a Shark Tank-style audience that we should replace cars with llamaswhy it’s a travesty that we haven’t connected more in the intervening years and why we both perceived our relationship (wrongly) as hierarchicalfriends that energize you vs friends that drain youthe importance of platonic male friendship, especially as you get olderJay isn’t good at receiving praise – and I catch him trying to deflect it from me!yet another reference by me of the Johari Windowthe dangers of over-utilizing self-reliancewe talk about our views on masculinity, fatherhood and prioritizing your valuesJay turns the tables on me and starts interviewing me with a bunch of rapid fire questions about Hamilton, cybertrucks, wet socks, Halloween candy and a ton more (this is really fun, btw)Find all of Jay’s stuff at his website.Theme song by Sorry Sweetheart.Logo by Nebulus Visions.Produced by Deft Communications.Engage with the show on Facebook, Instagram and Bluesky. Recorded at Jay’s office in Golden, CO.

#OTCQuickie: Grindcore Culture Is the New Amish Lifestyle

#OTCQuickies are mini solo episodes where I address a question or a topic in service of trying to be a good dude in the world. Today's topic is:Grindcore Culture Is the New Amish Lifestyle"Burning Man is for the olds. Just ask the AI kids" is the name of an article I read recently that mentioned "grindcore culture."  Here's a pertinent passage from the piece:"Daksh Gupta, the 23-year-old cofounder of AI code review Greptile, said Burning Man hasn’t really been part of the zeitgeist since he moved to San Francisco in 2023. "Gupta, who has become a poster child of AI boom’s grindcore culture, summarized the current mood among young tech workers in San Francisco as incompatible with the Burner sensibility: 'The current vibe is no drinking, no drugs, 9-9-6 [work from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week], lift heavy, run far, marry early, track sleep, eat steak and eggs.'" Congratulations! You've invented how to be Amish with a computer! I dig into this concept more, why I think it completely misses the point of life, advocate for art and beauty, and get an assist from the movie Dead Poets Society. Reminder: You are not your fucking job, and you will never be able to turn yourself into a robot, so go touch some grass.Theme song by Sorry Sweetheart.Logo by Nebulus Visions.Produced by Deft Communications.Engage with the show on Facebook, Instagram and Bluesky.

#OTCQuickie: Why AI Will Never Take Over the World

#OTCQuickies are mini solo episodes where I address a question or a topic in service of trying to be a good dude in the world. Today's topic is:Why AI Will Never Take Over the WorldI read a piece in The Atlantic by Charlie Warzel called "AI Is a Mass Delusion Event," which inspired this Quickie. It's well-reasoned and well-written, and it triggered my memory from a couple of weeks ago of a recent rejection of a data center by City of Tucson. I reference a Tucson Sentinel story about it in this episode, which you can find here. One thing overlooked by both tech bros and the evangelical true believers is that for all their pie-in-the-sky posturing, they have one giant obstacle in front of them: Local governments who answer to their residents about how resources are allocated. Today's topic is:How do you get along with women so well? It's a question I get often because I work extensively with women, have a lot of platonic female friends, and enjoy myself with ease in predominantly female social situations. ABOUT THIS SHOW
