On the first Monday of each month, The Piano Pedagogy Playlist features a piece from Chris Caine’s A Year in Twelve Keys—a collection that explores all twelve key signatures using only the notes within each key. For May, we turn to Dance in May, an expressive and graceful work in 3/4 time that deliberately avoids the feel of a traditional waltz. Instead, the piece invites students to think in longer phrases—shaping a continuous, legato line while navigating octave writing, carefully choreographed hand-offs of the melody, and nuanced pedaling. As a companion piece, I’m playing Pink Tulips from “A Splash of Color” by Dennis Alexander. Though significantly simpler from a technical standpoint, it does share a similar sense of motion. Subtle surprises in harmony and phrase length give the piece a sense of expansion and musical curiosity. Students often fall in love with pieces like Clair de lune long before they have the technique to play them well. And as teachers, that puts us in a tricky spot. We don’t want to dampen that enthusiasm—but we also know those pieces are, at the moment, out of reach. And handing them a simplified version rarely captures what drew them in to begin with. In this episode, I explore a collection that offers a better solution. With St. Patrick’s Day approaching, I wanted to explore music written from within the culture. The waltz is one of the most enduring musical forms in Western music. First popular in the late 18th century, it has outlasted powdered wigs, pet rocks, fidget spinners, and even the 6-7 craze — and composers are still writing waltzes today. In this episode, I play three contemporary waltzes for intermediate piano students, each with a very different personality. All three happen to be in the key of A, two in major and one in minor, and each one shows a different way this classic dance form continues to live on in today’s teaching repertoire. We begin with the expressive and flexible Valse Sentimentale by Catherine Rollin, a stylized waltz full of rubato and Impressionist color. Next is Midnight Waltz by Julie Ann Ballard, a reflective minor-key piece that works beautifully for tone and phrasing at the early intermediate level. Finally, Vals Romántico by Martin Cuéllar brings us back to A major with a lyrical, romantic waltz that challenges students to navigate a roaming left hand while maintaining a relaxed tempo. The "Celebration Series" of repertoire books published by the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto have been a longtime favorite source of mine for discovering new pieces by living composers. Updated every seven years, I always find fresh pieces that eventually become old favorites. This week we explore the fine art of making your students sweat (musically speaking). I’ll play two pieces that capture the fidgety, feelings of uncertainty that many of our students (and ourselves) experience heading into a new school year. First, the Anxiety Toccata by Scott Price, which doesn't let up from the first note until the double bar. Then I take a spirited dash through Friedrich Burgmüller’s Inquiétude, which offers just enough breathing room to avoid passing out. Along the way, I'll give my thoughts on why the hit pop song “Anxiety” didn’t make today’s playlist (spoiler: I dig the song! Just not such a great piano solo). But you might have some students who want to play it this fall, so I include links to the better arrangements out there.
