In our opinion, you can tell that it was a series converted to a movie. While the artistry and the screenplay really conveyed a beautiful story of finding and building community, there was a lot that fell flat in this for us. Disney's experimental age is full of great movies and duds. From experiment 626 to the most expensive flop, the movies are varied and interesting. This week, we are tackling yet another experimental movie, Treasure Planet! This space take on Treasure Island came out in 2002, right in the middle of the experiments. The animators used three different types of animation/technology to create this movie, which jacked up the price and made it less visually smooth. Mistakes aside, this is a fun movie, with interesting characters, and the best sidekicks, potentially ever. Part of that is due to the release timing, it hit theaters right when the SAG-AFTRA strike started, and part of that was due to the marketing that was done. For a movie that discusses really important themes like assimilation, immigration, race, and class in an accessible way for children, it was marketed as a star crossed lovers story.
