In Pointed Roofs, we follow Miriam Henderson, a young gentlewoman navigating the challenges of earning a living after her familys financial downfall. Inspired by Dolf Wyllardes notion of nous autres, Miriam embarks on a journey to teach conversational English at a girls school in Germany, drawn by her admiration for Villette. As she immerses herself in a vibrant community of strong-willed female personalities, all under the watchful eye of the formidable Fraulein, Miriams year abroad becomes a rich tapestry of human experience. Dorothy Richardson skillfully captures the subtle intricacies of perception through keenly observed physical and emotional details. While later works of hers were overshadowed by the label of stream of consciousness, her early novels, particularly those written before 1923, shine with poignant explorations of the human mind, free from stylistic excess.
