This Is The Darkest Online Crisis South Africa Has Ever Faced | Politically Aweh Podcast

In this raw conversation, social media Law Expert Emma Sadleir reveals the terrifying reality behind anonymous WhatsApp channels, deepfakes, and sextortion targeting South African youth.Emma recently won TWO court orders against Meta in one week, forcing them to hand over the identities of perpetrators hiding behind anonymous accounts. She breaks down the gendered nature of online harm, explains why SA police are "wholly ill-equipped" to handle these cases, and shares which app she'd delete forever (hint: it's not the one you'd expect). Plus, she reveals why pornography as sex education is creating a generation of misogynistic behavior and what we can do about it.Digital violence is an extension of gender-based violence, and we all have a role to play in protecting our children and holding perpetrators accountable. If you or someone you know is affected by gender-based violence, hope and help are within reach. You are not alone—there are people, communities, and services ready to help. This podcast is a companion series to our YouTube comedy explainer videos about South African and international current affairs. Why South Africa Needs to End Fossil Fuels | Politically Aweh Podcast #004

Politically Aweh speaks with Ferrial Adam, Nick Hedley and Crispian Olver about fossil fuels and climate change impacts in South Africa in 2024.Climate change is a critical issue that intersects with societal issues like unemployment, crime, electricity, and service delivery, yet it often remains overlooked in political agendas. Burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas are driving the vast majority of the emissions heating up our country, bringing food insecurity, extreme weather and other impacts like floods and droughts. But South Africa has historically been very dependent on coal and is today one of the world's most carbon-intensive economies. To bring this urgent matter into focus, we've produced a podcast episode featuring insightful discussions with climate change experts that go deeper into the topic covered in our recent explainer videos about energy and climate change, which you can watch here: Let’s Get AWEH!This podcast is a companion series to our YouTube comedy explainer videos about South African and international current affairs. How Oil Companies Use Sports To Trick You

Why does TotalEnergies, a French oil company, love African football so much? The answer lies in sportswashing - a tactic fossil fuel companies are increasingly using to deflect from their harms to society or the environment. In 2020, French oil company Total told shareholders extracting African resources is at the "heart of its strategy." Today, it is the company with the most new planned fossil fuel extraction activities across the continent. Some of these projects, like the East African Crude Oil Pipeline, have been described as "carbon bombs," supercharging climate change, and displacing thousands of people from their homes.Join Céline Tshika and the award-winning Politically Aweh team as we explain how sportswashing works using the TotalEnergies sponsorship of Afcon as a case study. Silenced athletes, greenwashing and dirty PR tactics like "astroturfing" all form part of a dark manipulative strategy oil companies and their allies use to prevent regular citizens from understanding the harms caused by fossil fuel extraction and pollution. To understand why more athletes don't speak up, we spoke to former Australian Diamonds netball player, Amy Steel. In 2022, the team famously refused to wear the logo of a controversial fossil fuel company, Hancock Prospecting. We also spoke to host of the Sustaining Sports podcast, researcher Benjamin Mole, who is doing a PhD in sustainable system change focusing on climate justice & southern African sport, and Tracy Makheti, an activist based in Nairobi with Greenpeace Africa. To get involved and learn more you can listen to The Sustaining Sport Podcast, or follow Greenpeace Africa and Fossil Free Football.
