Practicing Health Equity

Join your host and guide Matt Castner as we explore the world of health equity. In the first season, subtitled The Headwaters, we will explore the question of what health equity is and why we should care about it.

  1. 5

    Libertarianism

In this episode, we look at what Libertarianism has to say about health equity with our guests, Dr. Jess Flanigan and Michael Cannon. Libertarianism is a core part of American discourse, but can be absent from public health discourse, which is why this is one of our most important episodes.

  2. 4

    Effective Altruism

In this episode, we consider Effective Altruism, the cool younger brother of Utilitarianism. Effective Altruism provides another lens through which to consider what health equity demands of us, and leads to some interesting conclusions when thinking about American inequities in a global context. This episode features interviews with Dr. Brian Berkey of the University of Pennsylvania, and Jack Lewars of OneForTheWorld.

  3. 3

    Utilitarianism

Join us for our first deep dive on an ethical framework with Utilitarianism, the invisible foundation of much of our modern world, including healthcare and public health. In this episode, we talk with Dr. Michael Quinn and Dr. Chris Riley, two of the world's leading experts on Utilitarianism and its patron saint, Jeremy Bentham. We also trace Bentham's thinking to contemporary challenges in health equity.

  4. 2

    What The Health?

Join us as we define what "health" is with Dr. Nick King and Dr. Yukiko Asada. Defining health is a complicated endeavor that both reflects and shapes our cultural norms. Additionally, we create a parallel reality with The Oversimplicator to investigate the moral and health consequences of a society dedicated to eating as many hot dogs as you can.
