Advances in Fisheries Science: Using Ecological Models to inform current fisheries advice

In this new episode of the "Researchers in the Spotlight" campaign, we sat down with Marta Coll, researcher at the Institute of Marine Science (ICM–CSIC) in Barcelona, to discuss her experiences leading the EuroMarine Foresight Workshop: “Advances in fisheries science: using ecological models to inform current fisheries advice”, which addressed the need to move fisheries management towards an ecosystem-based approach.

JELLY-NEXT - Advancing Jellyfish Research through Data Sharing & Engagement with Research Infrastructures (RIs)

Jellyfish play crucial roles in marine ecosystems, providing ecosystem services often overlooked, including carbon cycling, habitat provision, and compounds with biotechnological applications. Despite their importance, understanding jellyfish mass appearances and their impacts on human activities remain limited. We interviewed Cornelia Jaspers from DTU Aqua on her experience leading the JELLY-NEXT Foresight Workshop, which aimed at bridging some important gaps.

  4. 6

Resilience of Marine Socio-Ecological Systems - Insights into the ReMSES Workshop

How to find methods to reliably estimate the resilience of natural systems including populations, ecosystems and full Socio-Ecological Systems? We sat down with Alberto Barausse and Camilla Sguotti from the University of Padova to answer this question and talk about their experiences leading the ReMSES Workshop on "Resilience of Marine Socio-Ecological Systems".

  5. 5

Rhodolith beds in the Global Carbon Budget: Designing an Integrated Research Strategy for Assessing Their Contribution

In this new episode of the "Researchers in the Spotlight" campaign we welcome João Silva, Senior Research Fellow at the Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR), who led the the RHODOCARB Workshop - Rhodolith beds in the Global Carbon Budget. We talked to him about his experience as a Foresight Workshop lead for EuroMarine.

  6. 4

Polychaetes as Indicators for Ecosystem Health and Climate Change

We had the opportunity to interview Daniel Martin, a Scientific Researcher at CSIC focusing especially on the study of inter-specific interactions involving Polychaetes, such as symbiosis. In this interview, we talked to him about his research studying the behaviour of this group of marine worms and how they can serve as indicators for Ecosystem Health and Climate change.

  7. 3

Challenges Posed by Invasive Alien Apecies (IAS) - Insights into the ”Mitigate Invasions” Workshop

We spoke to Jamileh Javidpour, Associate Professor at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) about her experiences leading the Foresight Workshop "Mitigate Invasion" - addressing challenges posed by invasive alien species (IAS) in Europe. Find out about the workshop's crucial role & how it facilitated interdisciplinary collaboration.
