Rivalry: A Football History Podcast

The history, people, and players that make up college football’s greatest rivalries

  1. 7

    Episode 6: Not Another Game

Coach McCarney breaks the 15 game Hawkeye win streak in Episode 5 and starts to flex on the Hawkeyes in the early 2000s. I talk about my former life coaching at Spring Woods High School and our end of season rivalry before looking at some of the legends of the CyHawk Rivalry, JJ Moses on the reverse first play, Sage Rosenfels, and of course, Seneca Wallace making his mark. Former Iowa TE Tyler Gerstandt shares about the atmosphere in the stadium and the drive to the stadium in Ames.

  2. 6

Season 1: Extra Episode, Steve Loney

First of all, I clearly spoke too soon about the Hawkeyes! You will know what I am referring to when you hear it. Anyway, this is the unedited conversation I had with former Iowa State Offensive Coordinator Steve Loney. He touches on what it was like to be an intimate participant in the rivalry, shares stories from some of the games, and goes deep on the massive impact Coach Dan McCarney played in bringing Iowa State to a spot of national prominence.

  3. 5

Season 1, Episode 5: The Return

After the lawyers mediate, we finally see a return of the CyHawk Rivalry in 1977. Not only does Coach Earle Bruce make a bold statement during that game, but we get some unbelievable quotes from the Daily Iowan. This is paired with former Cyclone Offensive Coordinator ,Steve Loney, and former Hawkeye Tight End, Tyler Gerstand, sharing their thoughts on the stereotypes of each fanbase and the importance of Dan McCarney building the rivalry game back from the dominant Hayden Fry years.

  4. 4

Season 1, Episode 4: Old School Games

The legend of Cy Hawk rivalry begins! We learn about the time the Hawkeyes walked off the field in protest, a giant bonfire in Ames, and a stolen victory bell that goes missing for over a decade among other stories I read about in the archives. We also go into why the rivalry stopped and how lawyers were needed to bring it back.

  5. 3

Season 1, Episode 3: The Game Plan

We look at the football history of both Iowa State University and University of Iowa. You'll learn how Iowa State garnered the nickname "Cyclones" from the Chicago Tribune, hear about two future national champion winners starting at Iowa State, and get to recount how Hayden Fry won a High School State Championship in Texas by failing his senior year classes.

  6. 2

Season 1, Episode 2: Love Letter to Iowa

After setting up the importance of Rivalries in general, we focus on the state of Iowa. I share my thoughts of what makes Iowa great while quoting Blogger/X'er Max Meyer and we hear from former Iowa Tight End Tyler Gerstandt (2005-2008) and former Iowa State Offensive Coordinator Steve Loney (1995-1997 and 2000-2001).

  7. 1

Season 1, Episode 1: The Set Up

On Episode 1, I introduce you to medieval life and compare the importance of belonging with that of our modern day allegiance to College football teams. You then learn a bit of my history and why I chose the Cy Hawk Trophy as the first rivalry to focus on.
