#18 - Big Bone Lick State Historic Site
Join us for a talk with Ranger Kolkmeyer. We discussed both Big Bone Lick State Historic Site's history and current offerings. Big Bone Lick is distinct: A Natural National Landmark A recently designated National Historic Landmark as well - making them one of only thirteen locations in the United States to hold both designations. The birthplace of vertebrate paleontology This state treasure is also a prehistoric gathering spot that continues to be a peaceful and inspiring location to gather your crew. This park has free admission to their grounds and museum, playgrounds and picnic areas. They also maintain 62 full hook up sites in their campground, which features a small pool (currently closed), new playground - with accessible swing - and a miniature golf course. Big Bone Lick also has a ten check point orienteering course, almost five miles of trails and a bison herd to observe - mornings and late afternoons are the best time for this. Cave tours, miles of nature trails with many natural geographic features - including arches, limestone cliffs and many examples of their karst topography. #7 - A Conversation with Mammoth Cave National Park Ranger Chris Clark about the Entrapment of Floyd Collins
In the winter of 1925, the story of Floyd Collin's entrapment in Sand Cave became one of the first international news stories via this new invention called the radio. The saga of his entrapment had the world tuning in daily for news of his rescue, earned a young reporter the Pulitzer Prize for journalism, and did not end when Floyd finally passed inside the cave he had given his life to explore. Mammoth Cave National Park Ranger Chris Clark is one of the most knowledgeable people on the topic of Floyd's story, both before and after his death. #8 - A Floyd Collins discussion with Dave Foster at Hidden River Cave
Join us for a conversation with Dave Foster, president and CEO of the American Cave Conservation Association and Hidden River Cave. Dave tells great stories about the life of Floyd Collins and the history of Cave Wars in South Central Kentucky. "Floyd was a casualty of Kentucky's Cave Wars. He was trapped twice. At the end of his life, he was trapped in the cave. But most of his life he was trapped trying to run a business(cave) that was so far off the beaten path that people couldn't find him. And location, location, location was everything," shared Dave Foster. We met up with him at Hidden River Cave in Hart County, Kentucky - a major hub of Kentucky's Cave Country and just miles from Mammoth Cave National Park. Mammoth Cave Bourbon is back on the shelf! Balance Distilling in Smiths Grove, Kentucky has recently revived the label and released the first bottles of this brand for decades. Originally produced in the 1800's and included for a time in the Van Winkle portfolio of spirits - this small batch distillery has indeed resurrected a tasty bourbon. Distilled in the karstland where the limestone is plentiful, you won't want to miss the opportunity to roadtrip through the beautiful rolling hills for this. Mammoth Cave Bourbon is also sold at the Lodge at Mammoth Cave. You can take home a bottle for yourself from the gift shop or pull up a chair at the bar and enjoy a drink.
