Running Behind
by Joey Metzger
Confession...I am a slow but persistent trail runner who likes to take on crazy trail running adventures. This is a podcast about the weird world of running, trail running and ultramarathons. Mostly from the perspective of the back of the pack...ordinary people trying to do extra-ordinary things. Topics will focus on gear, health, nutrition, training, trails and trail races around MN and the Midwest, and also taking a look all of this through the lens of older runners. Get ready for an ultra slow, but highly optimistic ride. We will get to that finish line, even if we are...running behind.

Erin Shaw : Planning, Persevering & The Capes of Wrath
Erin Shaw, by her own admission, is not fast. She has come in last more than once, she has been cutoff more than once, she has just made the cutoff with 8 minutes to spare, more than once, but Erin gets it done and she savors the moments along the way. Whether it’s taking on multiple-day trail races in rugged backcountry areas like the Scottish highlands, or battling cancer and coming out the other side with a new perspective and priority on life, my guest today has learned that “the only way IS through” and that nearly anything can be accomplished with planning, and persevering. In this conversation, we learn how she discovered trail running and adventures like Cape Wrath, how she navigated a breast cancer diagnosis, and how she has learned that she is capable of more than she knows and that she can help others to realize that as well. And stayed tuned after the conversation for another installment of Running Out Loud, where I share a piece by Nikita Gill called “The Ocean In You”. Get shoes on, grab your sun sleeves and head out for a nice long training run, cuz it’s time to hit the trail.Trail Running Film Archive: https://trailrunningnordwand.blogspot.com/p/the-trail-running-film-archive.htmlCape Wrath Ultra Races: https://www.capewrathultra.com/Cape Wrath film featuring Erin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PR7UHRRz3kEErin's coaching website: https://erinshaw.blog/3 Days of Syllamo: https://www.syllamoevents.com/3daysErin on Ultrasignup: https://ultrasignup.com/results_participant.aspx?fname=Erin&lname=Shaw#Joey's YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@Run_Joey_RunRunning Behind on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/running.behind_podJoey's Strava Profile: https://www.strava.com/athletes/111237895Artwork by Ed Linder

Kevin Swift : Swifty Runs The 50, YouTube & Backyard Ultra 101
Anyone remember the old days when you had to go to the library, to find the information you needed? These days, a simple Google search or a look on YouTube and you can usually find it. I began posting videos on YouTube as a reference for folks to see trail races, courses, areas and experiences, and to show my family and friends what I was up to. Well, so did my guest today, Kevin Swift. Kevin, aka SWIFTY, did not come to running until a little bit later in life, but once he did, he was hooked. The races became longer and the adventures became more involved. Eventually he found himself on a quest to run races in all 50 states, and with a YouTube channel to boot. We go through all of that, discuss his drumming in bands and rock & roll dreams, and top it off with a backyard ultra 101 session, where we are joined by Mario and Erik to answer all of his questions. So, grab those brooks, some sunscreen, and your camera (or drum sticks), cuz it’s time to hit the trail.Kevin's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@kevins1775Mainly Marathon's website: https://mainlymarathons.com/Kevin's band Six Figure Sunrise FB page: https://www.facebook.com/sixfiguresunrise/Kevin's music with Rox on Apple: https://music.apple.com/us/artist/rox/1824567008Joey's YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@Run_Joey_RunRunning Behind on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/running.behind_podJoey's Strava Profile: https://www.strava.com/athletes/111237895Artwork by Ed Linder

Dylan Harris & Drew B Darby: “The Cutoff” A Film For The Rest Of Us
I am not quite sure why they agreed to be on my humble little podcast, but I'll take it. Today, I am honored to be joined by Dylan Harris and Drew B Darby. Dylan is a well-known filmmaker, and the creator/director of the feature film, The Chase, that covered the 2024 men's race at the Cocodona 250. Drew, also has quite the resume, with clients that include household names like Sally McRae and Heather Jackson. In 2024, Dylan recruited Drew to collaborate and help him on The Chase, and in 2025, they teamed up again at Cocodona to create another masterpiece. The film is called “The Cutoff”, and for all of us ‘normal’ folks, who constantly find ourselves at the wrong end of the timing clock, this is the film for us. The film tells the stories that don’t usually get told and does it with a level of production that is rarely seen. What you end up with is an amazing piece of cinema, and might just be the most unique take in this genre since “Unbreakable”. Or maybe I’m just super biased…but I promise you, the film is fantastic, and so is this conversation. So, get your shoes on for your long run, and heck, bring your Sachtler tripod with too, if you need it, but it’s time to hit the trail. The Cutoff Film Tour information: https://www.aravaiparunning.com/the-cutoff/Dylan Harris on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@SpiritOfDylanSomo Collective website: https://www.somocollective.co/Drew B Darby on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@drewbdarbyDrew B Darby film website: https://www.drewbdarby.com/Joey's YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@Run_Joey_RunRunning Behind on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/running.behind_podJoey's Strava Profile: https://www.strava.com/athletes/111237895Artwork by Ed Linder

Jamison Swift : Second Seasons & Sagas of Ice and Fire
Jamison Swift, along with his wife, Lisa, is a race director in MN for the St Croix 40 Winter Ultra (BTW, bring your own sled), and the Fire Tower Trail Races. Besides that, he is an avid photography, active volunteer at races, a bike, run and sled adventurer, a musician, and quite frankly, a bit nerdy like yours truly. We cover all of that, along with Jamison and Lisa's amazing efforts to make their races accessible to everyone, especially women, with their 50 Women Run 50K program. And stay tuned after the conversation for another Running Out Loud segment where I feature another Joe Hardin piece called "Standing Through Seasons". We've got a lot of ground (or snow) to cover in this one, so go grab your shoes (and sled or tire if you need it), it's time to hit the trail.St Croix 40 Winter Ultra: https://stcroixwinterultra.com/Fire Tower Trail Races: https://firetowertrailraces.com/Jamison's photography: https://swiftphotography.smugmug.com/Jamison's blog Second Runnings: https://secondrunnings.me/Jamison on Instgram: https://www.instagram.com/jamisonswift/Link to "Fire" the film featuring the 50 Women Run 50K program: https://mspfilm.org/show/fire-50-women-run-50k/Joe Hardin's "Standing Through Seasons" on Substack: https://sobrietysweatandsawdust.substack.com/p/standing-through-seasonsJoe Hardin on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/trail_tortoise_running/Joey's YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@Run_Joey_RunRunning Behind on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/running.behind_podJoey's Strava Profile: https://www.strava.com/athletes/111237895Artwork by Ed Linder

Tiffany Piotrowicz : Selling Shoes & Giving Hope
Season Two is here!! Yes, my loyal listeners, I am back, and so are my wonderful guests. My first guest is Tiffany Piotrowicz. At a fairly young age, she pivoted in her career and bought her own business. She has used her creative and marketing skills, and grown and guided that business into a great success, and now is using that as a tool and platform for bringing hope and help to her community. And stayed tuned after the conversation for a new segment I am deputing in season two called, "Running Out Loud", where I share works and words from talented folks that have been inspiring me lately. Get to know about our plans for races and training in 2026 (likely to change by the next episode LOL), and get to hear to story of precious Hoka, aka TT, Erik's beloved little furry friend who he recently had to say goodbye to. Wes Cornett | Misfits, Rebels, Fever Dreams and Tacos
Wes Cornett was born in Hawkins, Indiana...well, maybe not Hawkins, but basically though. While still just a kid, a bad breakup and a love of cheap tacos lead him to the military. After a 20 year career that included deployments in Bosnia and Afghanistan, his military career left a wake of hard realities...the loss of his best friend, struggles with PTSD, anxiety, depression, sobriety and his mental health. Eventually though, he found his footing and a love for trail running and hiking. Even though some struggles continue, Wes is finding success, including a recent raffle ticket win to run the Western States Endurance Run (cuz hey, you can't spell Western States without "Wes"), and a tremendous accomplishment of publishing his first novel. Needless to say, this episode covers a lot of ground...we're talking like Tor Des Geants ground. Dr Tonya K Olson | Horses, Grandmas, Bunkers Bar And The Michigan Bluff Social Club
IN A TIME BEFORE FIREBALL...around mile 20, somewhere along highway 61 just north of Duluth, MN, Dr. Tonya hit a low in her first marathon, when suddenly four hands from the Reef Bar reach out with some much needed Jack Daniels. It was one of several inspirational moments that helped her complete her first of ten straight Grandma's marathons. Or there was the time when she moves to a new town and becomes a tour guide on her first day of living there! Or her lifelong love of horses and how they have shaped her entire life both personal and professional. Okay, yeah...we do talk a LITTLE footcare. I mean, after all, she is one of the premiere footcare experts in the world of endurance athletics, and she does lead footcare for THE Western States Endurance Run, but really, this is all about getting underneath the kinesiology tape and getting to know the real Dr. Tonya. Neeraj Egbert | Here For The Adventure, Here For The Immigrants
This is Neeraj's story... He was born in India and grew up with the typical norms and traditions of his community, spending a few of his key formative years nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, in the idyllic village of Nainital. In 1994, he had the opportunity to visit the US through an exchange program, and it was quite the culture shock. He ultimately stayed though. Settling in Louisville, eventually getting married and landing in a career as a Physical Therapist. And while not athletic as a youth or young adult, he found his way to running and eventually to trail running. In late 2024, Neeraj won the lottery...the 2025 Western States Endurance Run lottery that is. In a race where the odds of getting selected are somewhere between the Powerball and Kentucky Derby Trifecta, Neeraj got in. He trained and ran the best race he could that day, but ultimately the timing clock on the Auburn track went blank about two minutes before Neeraj was able to cross the finish line - no belt buckle, no official finish time and no certainty that he would ever get the chance to run Western States again...and then something magical happened. Sometimes fate has a way of knowing just who to shine down on. This is his moment and this is his story.iRunFar Article: https://www.irunfar.com/neeraj-egbert-2025-western-states-100-golden-hour-ticket-winner-profileTown of Nainital: https://uttarakhandtourism.gov.in/destination/nainitalWestern States: https://www.wser.org/Hurt 100 Trail Race: https://hurt100.com/Neeraj on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/egbertne47/Joey's YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@Run_Joey_RunRunning Behind on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/running.behind_podJoey's Strava Profile: https://www.strava.com/athletes/111237895Artwork by Ed Linder

Alex Baker | Never Moving On, Always Moving Forward
Alex met his wife Amanda when they were both in college. They got married, and after years of trying, they finally had a child. Tragically, while their child was still a toddler, Amanda was diagnosed with cancer and lost her battle to that relentless disease 16 months later. In this powerful and emotional conversation, Alex walks us down the path of that pain and loss, but also through the transformational journey of change and hope that happens afterwards. With the rallying cry of "Never moving on, but Always moving forward", Alex takes back control of his health, his life, and takes the fight to cancer. Julie Anding | Grit, Grace & Choosing To Live On Purpose
Julie Anding, like me, is a cutoff chaser. I met Julie at Mammoth Trailfest where we both got cutoff at the summit of Mammoth mountain. It turns out that was not her first (or even second) time doing that. We get the full details on Julie’s history of running, trail running and chasing cutoffs. We also learn how Julie is using her yoga business and positive mindset to make a difference and help heal those among us who are vulnerable and hurting. Not only that, Julie is doing all of this while dealing with a rare neurological disorder that has impacted her life in a significant way. This episode has it all and is one of my all time favorite conversations. Crew Access Vol 4 | Trail Talk With Mario & Erik
The boys are back! And this time we are in the backyard. That’s right, we are doing this episode “Boulder Boys” style, recording it live in person in my backyard. And yeah, the audio quality is not perfect, but hey, there’s nothing better than hanging together with some burgers and beer and chatting about our recent trail running adventures. We recap Mario’s Continental Divide 50K with his brother Luke, the full details on my Mammoth 50K fail, and Erik’s day at the Twin City 10 mile, where rumor is, he tried to get a glimpse of Courtney Dauwalter running her 2:45 marathon. It’s always fun chatting with the guys so grab your new Mount To Coast H1’s and a vest and let’s get ready for a little Crew Access talk. Amber Thielbar has been 'casually winning' ever since she started doing trail races some seven short years ago. In fact, her Ultrasignup results read like Tom Brady's winning percentage. Now, not all races go as planned or are as successful as others. We sit down and discuss how all this got started, what is helping her to be so successful, and we dissect her recent first attempt at the 100 mile distance at the iconic MN Superior 100 trail race. Dave Shannon | By The Numbers, Stories of a Marathon Maniac
Dave Shannon is a numbers guy. In 1997, twelve years before anyone even thought up Strava, he began documenting his runs…EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. Since then, he has logged over 46,000 miles, 332 races, 172 marathons, including one in every state and four of the six world majors, 49 ultramarathons...and near and dear to my heart, a handful of DFL podium finishes. He is also a race director for FANS Ultra Races. Most importantly, Dave is an epic storyteller. A raconteur of the highest level. Tim Tollefson | The Curious Crafter, Saying Yes & Going Long
He may say different, but my guest is not your "average" runner or person. My guest is not a back of the packer. In fact, my guest today runs a 2:18 marathon (hey, that's like 2:08 in super shoes), has created one of the premiere North American trail race events, placed 3rd at UTMB...TWICE, made the Olympic qualifying multiple times and has come in the top 5 at the Wester States Endurance Run! So what the hell is he doing on a back of the pack, ordinary runner podcast?...Well, this person is also a champion for causes that affect us ALL, and he is constantly striving to see the sport of trail running opened up to runners of all abilities and speeds, especially those in under represented communities. Not only that, he is super fun and an incredibly intelligent and cool dude. And did I mention has the best hair in the business? Mandy & Bill Hansel | Runners On The Storm, Racing To Make A Difference
Mandy and Bill Hansel have created what has quickly become one of the premier trail race and sporting event organizations in Minnesota and the Midwest. Not only does their Storm Sporting Events provide first class and accessible but challenging events, but the mission behind it all is what really matters. From day one, they knew that it would be important that Storm Sporting Events be a vehicle to help provide resources and bring awareness to youth mental health issues. In 2025, they were able to award their first scholarship to someone who is studying to become a resource in that field. We talk about how this whole thing got started, how its grown and where it’s headed. We also chat about some of the fun and crazy things they like to do in their spare time (not that they have any). "Comfort is a disease..." 5 years ago, Tony Gillham, my guest today, had a dream. It took 2 trainers, endless training miles, countless hours, the support of family and friends and ultimately 5 arduous days and nights crossing over 250 miles in the AZ desert, but in May 2025, Tony made his dream a reality. To help tell the story, we are also joined by one of his crew and pacers (and a pretty awesome podcast host himself), Mr. Ben Mead. This is a tale not to be missed! I do apologize for the audio quality at times, but for goodness sake, Tony was calling in from an oil rig, somewhere off the coast of Alaska. Get ready for an absolutely epic episode, as we hear the story of how Tony arrived at and ultimately conquered one of the most premiere long trail races in the world...the Cocodona 250.Tony's podcast episode on Ben Mead's Chasing Cutoffs: https://open.spotify.com/episode/6qOM4TL4zNNydreJy5bqLgBen Mead's 2024 Cocodona 250 podcast episode: https://open.spotify.com/episode/6gV6At4mg3SuivT3idkucKorhttps://open.spotify.com/episode/5MvIk9e2YcIUP5zYkYF6yaThe Cocodona 250 by Aravaipa Running: https://www.aravaiparunning.com/cocodona2/Joey's YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@Run_Joey_RunRunning Behind on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/running.behind_podJoey's Strava Profile: https://www.strava.com/athletes/111237895Chasing Cutoffs w/Ben Mead (Go listen! Crew Access Vol 2 | Trail Talk With Erik & Mario
The boys are back in town, the boys are back. That’s right, Erik and Mario are back. Thanks for meeting up with us again at the back of the pack in the world of Running Behind. In this episode Mario, Erik and I talk about some of our races and experiences; including the time Mario took a wrong turn after running in a loop in the rain for 13 hours, the time Erik forgot his water bottles back in MN (but once again hob-knobbed with running royalty at his event, and the time I apparently DID NOT run, even half of the Zumbro 34 mile race. We talk a lot of other stuff too. In fact, we talk so much this time, that if you are lacing up those Topo’s for your long run, you better pack some bacon, quesadillas, cookies and a whole freaking jar of pickles, cuz we have a ways to go. Get laced up, get ready and let’s get this show...on the trail.Erik's Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/mr_spiegs/Mario's Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/stories/runmariorun91/Buffalo Run 50K Race:https://www.buffalorunadventures.com/buffalo-run/Elm Creek Backyard Ultra Race:https://bigsbackyardultra.com/races/elm-creek-backyard-ultra/Ashley Paulson on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/ashkickn/The Great World Race (7 Marathons, 7 Continents, 7 Days):https://thegreatworldrace.com/Joey's YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@Run_Joey_RunRunning Behind on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/running.behind_podJoey's Strava Profile: https://www.strava.com/athletes/111237895Chasing Cutoffs w/Ben Mead (Go listen! Welcome again to the Running Behind start line. Nothing less than epicness will do for episode number 6. I am joined by fellow MN trail runner, Jason Reeve. In less than 36 months, Jason went from running 0 miles to completing a 100 mile trail race, at the notoriously challenging Zumbro Endurance Trail Run. We get to hear his story and history, how in his early forties he decided to get himself to a place where he could run 100+ miles, and maybe most importantly, how he got the nickname "The Undisputed Big Eddy". Get ready and get some anti-chafing cream on, because we have a long ways to go.Zumbro Endurance Run 100 Mile Info: https://www.zumbroendurancerun.com/100-mile-info/The Storm Trail Race Series: https://www.stormsportingevents.org/event-cms/iFIT: https://www.ifit.com/Jason on Strava: https://www.strava.com/athletes/105288161Jason on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jason.reeve.98#Joey's YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@Run_Joey_RunRunning Behind on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/running.behind_podJoey's Strava Profile: https://www.strava.com/athletes/111237895Artwork by Ed Linder

So, get those shoes on and headphones in, it’s time for a little steady state with Running Behind. Crew Access Vol 1. | Trail Talk With Erik & Mario
If that first episode left you wanting more, than want no more, because I ‘m back. And this time it's 'net downhill', because I brought some friends! I welcome Mario & Erik to the pod, in what will be a recurring series that I am calling “Crew Access | Trail Talk With Erik & Mario. In this episode, you will get to learn all about Erik and Mario, how they got started running, how they balance running workouts with young kids, what their plans and ambitions are, and how we are all a bit nerdy but could probably put together a helluva jazz band. We also recount several race experiences, including the 2024 Wild Duluth 50K that they ran together, and Erik’s wild weekend in the desert at the 2025 Black Canyon races. Where, I might add, he made a new friend who goes by the name of Jim Walmsley. This one runs a little long, but well worth the ride. So buckle up, grab your trumpet or sax and let’s get started. There’s no time to lose when you are Running Behind. Joey Metzger | What The Bleep Is This & Just Who Do I Think I Am?
Well here it is…one of the most highly anticipated slow runner podcast launch episodes ever! This thing has got it all. From my early running days of dominating the 3200 meter podium (DFL podium) in the mid 1980’s at Minot High, to my crazy exploits of trying to out run a forest fire while being attacked by bees in the Mount St Helens backcountry, followed by a scintillating account of a successful Boston marathon effort (full disclosure…not my effort). From there, it only gets more thrilling as I take you through some of my wilder experiences, like the time I fell out of a plane and nearly died. I even dissect my deep love and passion for bourbon at one point (to be completely transparent, not so much dissect…but I do say the word “bourbon “ twice). This is the inaugural episode of Running Behind. I tell the story of me: a slow running, DFL specialist, with a small motor, little natural ability, but a big heart and an unreasonable amount of stubbornness. An ordinary guy, trying to do extra-ordinary things. This is your chance to get to know a little bit about the host of this show, and how I plan to use this podcast to speak to all of the back of the pack and “ordinary” runners out there, who are pushing themselves daily to tackle amazing and seemingly impossible adventures. I would say the excitement is going to be non-stop, but as you soon will learn, I like to take a lot of walk breaks. Sit back and get ready, because here comes Running Behind.
