In today’s episode, we join Victoria as she sits down with Rachel Hrbek and Joann Schimmel. Rachel shares her journey after being diagnosed with a rare genetic mutation that causes Polycythemia Vera, a type of blood cancer, and Budd-Chiari Syndrome, that causes occlusion of the hepatic veins that drain the liver. Joann is not only Rachel's mother but also one of her caregivers during this chapter in her life. Today we learn of how they overcame the difficult experience of going through an organ transplant from their different perspectives. Today Victoria sits down with Bethany and Hannah Kieme, the founders of HeartCharged, who at an early age received a diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). HCM is the number one killer of student athletes and is asymptomatic so it most often kills without warning.
