Sci-Fi Throwdown

Welcome to Sci-Fi Throwdown!  At one time, the genre of science fiction was not considered serious literature, the stuff of mostly pulp magazines and mere entertainment.  Readers of the genre will know this has not been the case for quite some time, and that there has been a surge in careful and critical analysis of science fiction developing for decades.  As former philosophy students now involved in the corporate world, we hope to contribute to this trend by interpreting and analyzing work within the genre.

    Episode 4.2--The Whisperer in Darkness

Join Nate and Chris once more as we tighten our eldritch three-corner hats, get sick on Boston Baked Beans, and discuss H.P. Lovecraft's novella "The Whisperer in Darkness."  Chris is now obsessed with storing his brain in a jar, and Nate will, apparently, never be able to pronounce Nyarlathotep.   References:The Whisperer in Darkness: Collected Stories Volume One (Tales of Mystery & The Supernatural) by H.P. Join Nate and Chris as we put on our eldritch three corder hats and pig out on gibbous Boston Baked Beans to discuss H.P. Lovecraft's novelette "The Whisperer in Darkness."  Oh, and lots of abyss staring, forbidden knowledge gesturing, and some mushroom crab people who can look like....anything.  References:The Whisperer in Darkness: Collected Stories Volume One (Tales of Mystery & The Supernatural) by H.P. Episode 3--Emergency Skin

Join Nate and Chris as we take a much needed turn, discussing N.K. Jemisin's textual pocket full of awesomeness, Emergency Skin.  Only delusions of TANSTAAFLing going on with this absolute gem of a novella/short story/novelette (the difference eludes me).  Emergency Skin is available on Amazon, and can be downloaded for free--we both highly recommend doing so.  N.K. Episode 1.2--The Chrysalids

Join us again while we follow the zany madcap adventures of David, Rosalind, and Petra as they cunningly escape the oppressive forces of Waknuk!  In this episode, we talk a bit more about the different post-apocalyptic conceptions of the human form and progress, as well as some social engineering, and a bit of character analysis. We can be reached through Instagram at scifithrowdown.

    Episode 1.1--The Chrysalids

In this episode, we discuss John Wyndham's book The Chrysalids.  The Chrysalids was published in 1955, and tells the story of a group of teenagers in a post-apocalyptic world who are ostracized from their community for being telepaths.  Social engineering, eugenics, and some surprisingly engaging thoughts on the nature of the human form make this coming-of-age novel a very fun read!
