Will 2024 All Come Down to the Ground Game?

On these final days of the race, the chance for either Kamala Harris or Donald Trump to persuade undecided voters will have narrowed to almost nothing. In such a razor-thin election, which party reaches more of its core voters, and gets more of them to actually cast a ballot, could decide the next presidency more than any ad, speech, or scandal. That’s why there’s been so much focus in 2024 on the topic of this episode: the ground game.Anxious Democrats are hoping that their get-out-the-vote operation, which they often describe as much more sophisticated than Trump’s, will give them the edge. But how much better is that operation, really? Can it make that much of a difference? And what does it even mean to have a good ground game? To discuss all of this on See How They Run, we’re joined by Yasmin Radjy, executive director of the progressive campaigning organization Swing Left, and The Nation’s own Jeet Heer, who has been following every twist and turn of this election for us.

Why Democrats Can’t Write Off the Rural Vote

Few questions have bedeviled Democrats as much as the question of how—or even whether—to reverse their decline in rural and blue-collar America. Long gone are the days when the party was seen as the natural home of the working class. Now, the dominant narrative goes, Democrats are a haven for urban, highly educated elites, while the Trump-led GOP makes inroads among working-class voters of all races, thus imperiling the coalition that has sustained Democrats for decades. With states like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan on a knife-edge this November, the Democrats need every vote they can get. So on today’s episode, we’re kicking the tires on the party’s relationship to rural voters. We have three guests who live and breathe rural America—and who are adamant that, far from being a lost cause for Democrats, many rural and working-class voters could be up for grabs if the party made a serious effort to win them over. Jane Kleeb is the chair of the Nebraska Democratic Party and the author of Harvest the Vote: How Democrats Can Win Again in Rural America. Anthony Flaccavento is an organic farmer, co-chair of the Rural Urban Bridge initiative, and the co-author of The Nation’s Rethinking Rural column. And, in a special bonus segment, we spoke to Sarah Taber, the Democratic candidate for North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture, about her campaign and how she is trying to bring urban and rural residents in her state together.

What a week. In just the past seven days, an assassin’s bullet almost killed Donald Trump, Joe Biden got Covid, Democrats continued to melt down over whether to replace Biden at the top of their ticket, and Republicans gathered in Milwaukee to crown Trump as their party’s nominee. It’s been an overwhelming, unprecedented period in our political history. But it’s this podcast’s job to try to make sense of this chaos for you. So today on See How They Run, Nation editor D.D. Guttenplan and national affairs correspondent John Nichols do just that.

What We Talk About When We Talk About the "Black Vote" | See How They Run

On this episode of See How They Run, a wide-ranging conversation with Christina Greer, Steve Phillips, and Adolph Reed Jr.If there's one thing everyone knows about American politics, it's that there is no way for a Democrat to win the presidency without Black voters. That's one of the reasons why, as Joe Biden fights desperately to stay in the 2024 election, he's made an aggressive effort to shore up Black support. In recent days, Biden has spoken at Black churches, given interviews to Black radio hosts, and leaned on the powerful Congressional Black Caucus to help bolster his political defenses. But there are signs that Black voters may not be ready to turn out for Biden as fervently as he needs them to. in the past few months, polls have shown Black support for Biden slipping to levels Democrats have not seen in generations. So can Biden overcome doubts about his fitness, reverse these trends, and hold the White House? Should we even believe the polls? And are we in the middle of a historic shift in the relationship between Black voters and the Democratic Party? To discuss all of this, D.D. Guttenplan is joined by a powerhouse trio of guests: Christina Greer, Associate Professor of Political Science at Fordham University; Steve Phillips, political strategist, Nation contributor, and author most recently of How We Win the Civil War: Securing a Multiracial Democracy and Ending White Supremacy for Good; and Adolph Reed Jr., Nation columnist and professor emeritus of political science at the University of Pennsylvania.
