Shared Histories

We have reached the third and final in this series of Shared Histories, which was made for the Age Without Limits #SeeAndBeSeen Day of Action - March 2024.   In this episode, all of our speakers are talking about an aspect of art and culture;  we  hear about heritage from 1796 , the impact on a family of the 1912 Titanic disaster, Journalism for the 1966 World Cup,  Lin tells us about an innocent cooking lesson at school in the 1960s, that had a lethal ending and back to the present with Alanna who who talks about her contemporary art and culture.  Shared Histories will continue asking and listening in future series.Engineered by Charlotte Eagleson and Produced by Ruthie Glaser#SeeAndBeSeen

In Episode two, our podcasters talk of their different social housing as children and their lives through sensory memories that are carried in mind images. These are the stories  that need to be told to keep history alive. They speak eloquently and with a true feeling for the times that constrained or supported their development. Wendy describes living on her grandparents farm in Nelson, Wales and each detail brings her memories to life in pictures that are in her mind and conveyed to ours on a string of lights. Ellen takes us back to the night of 14th February 1945 when her home in Dresden was bombed by Allied Forces in WW2. Her words take us by the mental hand of destroyed streets and confusion that filled her days. When listening to Ken, we are reminded of the preciousness of our identities and the reliance we put into believing that they are solid and fixed elements that form our identities.#SeeAndBeSeen

This first full episode is launched  on March 20th 2024 for The Centre for Better Ageing  #See And Be Seen Action Day. We meet Kath and Lin who tell us about their early lives in Brighton from 1924, when opportunities for women were not as they are now and where DAB radio would be a spaceship compared to the Accumulator used to power radios. Ernie describes his wartime experiences with the library service under gun fire and explains the use of a Tabulator. Whilst Ian King of the Hells Angels and rider of  rode a  Honda Sport  describes  "disagreeing" with the King of the mods  on the beaches of Brighton. This five minute episode introduces some of the seniors who have shared their life stories with Shared Histories. Their accounts take us into a war torn territory,  on board ships,  to the workhouse, into the secrets of  Lins lunch box and a night out with Kool and the Gang. We start in 1945 and move back and forth as far as 1912.The full length Episode One will be released on 20th March 2024 and will be launched a the The Jubilee in Brighton.
