Whalien
CHRVNS and Tim Mechling sit down with Whalien and discuss the down and dirty side of being a jam band, how to be a multi-genre band while also having a clear identity, does being a drummer who writes lyrics make you a piece of shit?, getting punched by my middle schoolers, from Singapore with love, literally how every band from Bellingham was started, and are you team Splish, or team Splash?!Whalien was born in a rush, winning the 2018 Summer Meltdown Showdown after playing together for only a few months. The win allowed them to perform alongside artists like Lettuce, Greensky Bluegrass, and Big Gigantic at Washington State’s Summer Meltdown Festival.Since that time the band has played relentlessly around the west coast. Now Defunkt
CHRVNS sits down with Now Defunkt and discusses humble beginnings in Huntington Beach, having an open invitation to jam, making music during lockdown, creating a Jamcation, community, finally getting to play live, and making a documentary about the whole thang. Now Defunkt is a genre-blurring sonic collective that grooves like a vinyl record spinning in a raucous room—raw, electric, and impossible to pin down. Fusing the jagged edges of proto-punk with the soulful swagger of R&B fusion and the gritty rumble of alternative rock, their sound is messy in all the right ways: pulsing, alive, and full of motion. Born from lockdown as a family-and-friends experiment in radical creativity and interdependence, Now Defunkt conjures a primordial soul shift—equal parts catharsis and celebration, always with a twist of lemon. Their music doesn’t settle. It moves, it mutates, and somehow feels right at home everywhere it lands.

Hannah Wyatt
Tim Mechling interviews Hannah Wyatt in this episode of Shut Up and Listen, delving into the journey behind her new album Sunday Cowboy, the vibrant folk music scene in Bellingham, and much more. Hannah Wyatt is an emerging indie folk artist based in Bellingham. Her melancholic sound has blossomed over the years with influence from a score of artists the likes of Keaton Henson, Joe Purdy, The Civil Wars, Radiohead, Sparklehorse, and more. Trained as a classical violinist, she saturates her music with lush strings and harmonies, often sinking into warm lofi coziness, then floating back to a more organic, folky sound. - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hannahwyattmusic/profilecard/?igsh=MXhtNzNzMDQxZndqcg== - Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/wrapped/share/share-d7f732fc64214eb78ab109c760913d56?si=ejRRDvoKR26SDdLiU7zVLQ&artist-id=4y0H8rJ0yFMp7L0o9aWVMP - Bandcamp: https://hannahwyatt.bandcamp.com/music - Website: https://hannah99strick.myportfolio.com/h Brought to you by: Subjam: subj.am Lost Giants https://lostgiantscider.com/ Menace Brewing https://menacebrewing.com/ Binary Recording Studio https://binaryrecordingstudio.com/Binary_Recording_Studio.html All things music in the PNW: https://www.shutupbham.com/ Follow on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/shutupandlistenbham/ Follow on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6Fua8JpP6GL2kQcqwB6YfZ Like on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/shutupandlistenbham/ Follow on Twitter: https://twitter.com/shutupbham

City of Pines
Chrvns and Tim Mechling sit down with Nick Clack to delve into his indie project, City of Pines. The conversation explores how his day job as a teacher shapes his songwriting and provides insight into his creative process for writing and recording. They also discuss his experiences touring major European festivals and reflect on his time living in Ukraine, where he not only recorded music but also played a role in delivering supplies to the front line. The episode wraps up with an exciting preview of City of Pines’ upcoming album, set to release on January 25th. City of Pines is a Pacific Northwest indie folk rock music project founded by Nick Clack in 2017. Inspired by the region’s dramatic landscapes—rain-soaked foggy hills, majestic snow-capped mountains, craggy coastlines, and towering trees—the music reflects the adventurous and reflective spirit of the PNW. The project began with demos recorded in a beach cabin on Camano Island and quickly expanded internationally. Nick traveled to Kyiv, Ukraine, to record at Studio 211, followed by a European tour. In 2023, Clack reunited with his Ukrainian producer, now a refugee of war, to record a full-length album in Sweden. Tyler joined the project in 2020 as an electric guitarist and contributed to the songwriting and vocals on the new album, Wander. Both Clack and Tyler are originally from the Stanwood/Camano area and met, ironically, through Tyler’s mother. Together, they have performed along the I-5 corridor and are actively booking new shows to promote the upcoming album release.
