Sister Carrie

Theodore Dreiser (1871–1945) was a prominent American author of the naturalist movement, known for his unflinching portrayal of lifes harsh realities. In his groundbreaking first novel, Sister Carrie (1900), we follow a naïve young woman from the countryside as she ventures into the bustling streets of Chicago, chasing her own version of the American Dream. Her journey begins with becoming a mistress to powerful men and culminates in her rise as a celebrated actress. Despite the alterations made by Dreiser and his wife to make the manuscript more acceptable to contemporary audiences, the novel sparked a minor scandal upon its release due to its morally ambiguous narrative. Dreisers moralizing voice warns that, despite Carries fame and fortune, true peace of mind remains elusive. This departure from conventional notions of poetic justice left readers of the time both intrigued and unsettled.
