S1E8 "Hope in the House" with Chris Gilbert

Overview Chris is a gay man, US Veteran, retired psych nurse, and 2024 NC House of Representatives candidate.  This statement is from the “Citizens for Chris Gilbert” Facebook page, “As a service-connected veteran, a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community, a compassionate nurse, husband, and a dedicated community volunteer-I'm uniquely qualified for the position. My journey has been one of service and commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of those around me.    I was raised in rural Western Rowan County, I am a proud product of our public school system, breaking barriers as the first in my immediate family to graduate High School. In wake of the life-altering events of 9/11, driven by a desire for financial stability and a fervent sense of duty, I answered the call to serve our nation in the United States Air Force. My military journey unfolded during the challenging "Don't ask, Don't tell" era, exposing me to the harsh reality of discrimination.    Having proudly worn the uniform of our armed forces, I understand the sacrifice and dedication required to serve. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I have personally navigated the path towards acceptance and equality, and I bring that understanding to the forefront of our diverse communities.   It was during my service that I grappled with the personal battles of C-PTSD, a struggle that fueled my unwavering commitment to make a difference in the lives of others. Motivated by the profound belief that no one should endure the pain I faced alone, I transitioned into healthcare, dedicating myself to healing, empathy and service becoming a behavioral health nurse.   Now, as a community volunteer, I've seen the power of collective action. I'm not just here to represent you; I'm here to be your advocate, to amplify your voices in the halls of power to make meaningful change for working class people while inspiring a new generation of voters.   Our community deserves a representative who understands the diverse needs of its citizens, and I am ready to be that voice. Together, let us build a future that celebrates our differences, protects our shared values, and works towards a more inclusive and equitable society.   Now, as I step into the arena of politics, my journey has prepared me for the challenges ahead. I carry with me the lessons of resilience, compassion, and the unwavering belief in the power of community. I've witnessed firsthand the struggles of those who feel marginalized, I too have felt like a second class citizen and I am determined to be the voice of change and truly make the 84th district the Crossroads of the Future.   Together, we can set the standard by building a district that champions equality, supports our educators, and invests in the well-being of every citizen from every walk of life . Let us embark on this journey together, fueled by the shared vision of a brighter, more inclusive future. Together, we can believe in a better tomorrow.” facebook.com/profile.php?id=61554120874236 This episode Chris and I talk about queer representation in politics, particularly in the context of healthcare. They explore the challenges faced by healthcare professionals, especially during the pandemic, and the impact of corporate interests on patient care. Overview: Kyle is a gay man, a poet, and a nurse. He struggled with both his physical and mental health in his 20+ year long journey to self-discovery. He was raised Christian, which provided him with a built-in community but also internalized guilt. He credits some of the church members with providing a supportive sounding board when struggling to label his sexuality. He spent years maintaining celibacy in an effort to combat his “homosexual urges”. During this time, he also earned his nursing degree from a Christian university. S1E3 “Neurodivergent, Queer, and Traumatized.” with Cindy Lemburg MSW, LCSW

Overview: Cindy works at Halcyon Mental Health, which is owned and operated by Aimee Whaley (Cindy’s wife) and Chris Nealy. They provide clients with a safe and relaxed therapy experience to address the things that are causing stress or not working in their lives. Instead of focusing on what is "wrong" with you, we start with the assumption that nothing is wrong - you are 100% who you are supposed to be. Regardless of background, culture or lifestyle, clients can expect an inviting space to explore thoughts, feelings, and experiences without fear of judgment. Cindy’s specialties include folks impacted by trauma, minority stress, neurodivergence and are part of the LGBTQIA+ community. She incorporates various tools into my practice, but most of her work is rooted in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and supporting a person's ability to live their life according to their personal values and beliefs. Finding a therapist that is a "good fit" can be a stressful and difficult process. Because of this, she invites all potential clients to treat our initial sessions as an "interview" to determine if she is the right therapist to meet your needs.   “You really are the expert in what path is best suited for you.” -Cindy Lemberg psychologytoday.com/us/therapists/cindy-lemberg-charlotte-nc/422761   Halcyon Mental Health PLLC: createyourcalm.com/ Charlotte Trans Health: https://charlottetranshealth.org/ PATH - Providing Access to Trans Healthcare - charlottetranshealth.org/providing-access-to-trans-healthcare-path/   In this episode, Cindy and I explore the intersection of queerness, neurodivergence, and mental health. We discuss the significant overlap between neurodivergent individuals and the gender diverse population. Cindy shares insights from her work with the PATH program, which provides essential healthcare access for uninsured and underinsured transgender individuals. We discuss the impact of legislative changes on healthcare providers. There is a significant need for advocacy, representation in research, and affirming identities in mental and physical healthcare. Building trust within healthcare networks, particularly for the transgender and neurodivergent communities, is incredibly important for these individuals. We explore various community resources, the role of Discord in fostering connections, and the challenges faced in accessing legal and financial support. Advocacy and continuing education for healthcare professionals is essential. Understanding patient needs, creating safe spaces, and the impact of professional organizations promotes advocacy. We need to encourage self-identification and accommodations for neurodivergent individuals by providing up-to-date resources and education for healthcare providers.   For all resources pertaining to this episode, head to Queerolina.org/helplines Download the full zine click:  Nurse Nikki's Resource Review   Keywords: queerness, neurodivergence, mental health, transgender healthcare, advocacy, gender diversity, autism, therapy, healthcare access, community resources, healthcare education, legal support Topics: Mental health therapy specifically aimed towards neurodivergent individuals and the gender diverse population. Research shows a higher percentage of gender diverse individuals identify as autistic compared to cisgender individuals. The PATH program provides essential healthcare access for uninsured and underinsured transgender individuals. Healthcare providers created health disparities when they create policies to comply with Executive Orders.  The process of changing one's name can vary significantly by location, affecting access to healthcare.  Members of CTH must undergo training and oversight. Trustworthy healthcare providers can offer valuable recommendations. Community resources are essential for the transgender population. Discord serves as a platform for support and connection. Legal and financial assistance for transgender individuals is available but limited. Advocacy is crucial for underserved minority groups.  Continuous education is necessary for healthcare professionals. Respecting patient identity and autonomy is vital in healthcare settings. Gender-neutral language can enhance patient interactions. Professional organizations play a key role in advocacy efforts.

“Mother of Queers: Advocate for All” with Dr. Beverly Maurice PhD, MS

Topics Allyship involves active participation in supporting marginalized communities. Personal experiences shape our understanding of allyship and community involvement. Ethical challenges in healthcare often arise from systemic issues. Chaplains play a crucial role in providing emotional support in healthcare settings. Racism contributes to significant health disparities in minority communities. Advocacy organizations like NAACP and PFLAG are vital for community support. Healthcare inequities affect access to care for underrepresented groups, making self-advocacy incredibly important Patient autonomy is a fundamental principle in bioethics and healthcare and essential for effective healing and care. Respecting patients' preferred names and pronouns is essential for quality care. Education and awareness are key to improving healthcare for all.  Access to gender affirming care is limited and needs improvement. Healthcare providers must recognize the unique needs of individuals based on their backgrounds. Patient advocacy is crucial in ensuring individuals receive the care they need. Cultural influences play a significant role in how weddings are perceived and conducted. Universal healthcare could alleviate many disparities in access to care. Preventative care is often overlooked but is vital for long-term health. End-of-life care should prioritize dignity and respect for the individual. Summary  Beverly is an incredible woman who bears a truly impressive number of titles.  She is a biological and spiritual mother of queer children.  MS in Bioethics PhD in Philosophy of Psychology (Healthcare) Founding Board PFLAG Executive Board NAACP Substitute Teacher - High School and Rowan Cabarrus Early College Jewish Minister/ Clergy/ Wedding Officiant Social Justice Activist   In this conversation, Beverly and I discuss the importance of allyship, personal experiences with the LGBTQIA+ community, and the ethical challenges faced in healthcare. They explore the role of chaplains, the impact of racism on health disparities, and the significance of advocacy through organizations like NAACP and PFLAG. The discussion emphasizes the need for respect in healthcare, the importance of patient autonomy, and the role of education in improving care for marginalized communities. We talk about the critical need for accessible gender affirming care, the disparities in healthcare that marginalized communities experience, and the importance of patient advocacy. Beverly shares personal experiences related to cultural influences on weddings, the ethical dilemmas in healthcare, and the significance of patient autonomy. The discussion also touches on the challenges within emergency medicine, the necessity for universal healthcare, and the dignity required in end-of-life care. Throughout, we emphasize the importance of understanding and utilizing available resources to improve patient outcomes and experiences.   Resources Download the full zine at Queerolina.org/HelpLines Advocacy Organizations PFLAG Find your chapter: pflag.org/findachapter/ NAACP Membership: naacp.my.site.com/BecomeaMember/s/ Advocacy: naacp.org/issues/race-justice Connection with the LGBT+ Community: naacp.org/resources/lgbtq-resolution Judaism and LGBT  Keshet: keshetonline.org/  JW informed consent  Hospital Liaison Committee for Jehovah’s Witnesses  To schedule CME/CE: [email protected]  End of Life Care/ Advocacy  Compassion and Choices Action Network: CompassionAndChoices.org End of Life Decisions Toolkit CompassionAndChoices.org/end-of-life-decisions-toolkit  Osha Towers (LGBTQ+ Outreach Manager)   [email protected]  414-441-9688  How to be an Ally Race UC San Diego: ucsd.libguides.com/antiracism/allyship LGBTQUIA+ UC Davis: lgbtqia.ucdavis.edu/educated/ally-tips Harvard Business Review: hbr.org/2023/04/research-how-to-be-a-better-ally-to-the-lgbtq-community Human Rights Coalition: hrc.org/resources/being-an-lgbtq-ally Tigerlily Foundation: tigerlilyfoundation.org/10-ways-to-be-a-better-ally-and-use-your-privilege-for-power/ Empowering Equality Healthcare Ethics AMA. ABOUT THIS SHOW

Smut, Did You Say? is a healthcare-centered podcast hosted by the Nurse Nikki, diving deep into the parts of medicine that too often go undiscussed: diversity, respect, consent, and the real human experiences behind clinical care. Each episode features interviews with patients, providers, educators, or advocates who share their stories, expertise, and lived truths. Whether you’re in the medical field or navigating it as a patient, Nurse Nikki guides you through the complexities of modern healthcare with compassion, clarity, and a touch of humor.
