Sounds Amazing from the Plymouth Sound National Marine Park

Elaine is joined by Dr Pamela Buchan, Marine Social Scientist at Exeter University and Brigadier Mike Tanner, Naval Base Commander at Devonport Dockyard. Together they look at the historic role the Dockyard has played in Plymouth and its effect on the environment in and around Plymouth Sound. We also discover our guests' passion for water and why the Brigadier's physique prevented him from having a different career in the RAF...!

Elaine talks to Hannah Harris from Plymouth Culture and Kerry Bidwell from Promoting Children in Plymouth and the Plymouth Drake Foundation. They discuss how culture fits within the context of a National Marine Park and ways of encouraging and helping poorer families to enjoy and engage with the sea. We also find out why Kerry believes every child should read a copy of the book, Stop Dropping Litter...!

Elaine meets Paul Naylor, marine biologist and underwater photographer. Paul came to Plymouth in his teens and takes us through his story, his enthusiasm for all things aquatic and discusses the huge importance of the Marine Park and all the fascinating creatures you can spot there. You'll never think of slugs in the same way again!

Elaine and Tudor discuss how Plymouth Sound became designated the UK's first - and so far only - Marine Park. But first Tudor tells us about his childhood experiences with the sea, visiting Plymouth as a child, then returning as a student. Tudor also talks about his hopes for the future of Plymouth Sound Marine Park.
