Breathing Cities: The Role of Green Spaces in Urban Life”

In this episode, we explore the critical role of green spaces in shaping modern cities. From improving air quality and reducing urban heat to supporting mental well-being and community life, green spaces are far more than aesthetic features—they are essential urban infrastructure. The discussion also highlights how thoughtful planning can integrate parks, green corridors, and nature-based solutions into dense urban environments, while addressing challenges such as land scarcity, equity, and sustainability.

Neighbourhood Planning and the Future of Our Cities

In this episode, I explored the role of neighbourhood planning in creating people-centred urban environments. From community participation to place-based identity, neighbourhoods remained at the heart of sustainable urban development.

  3. 2

Two Cities. Two Geographies. Two Urban Identities.

Contrasting urban character of Kandy and Galle — and the comparison was fascinating.Kandy, nestled within Sri Lanka’s central highlands, is shaped by terrain. Surrounded by steep hills and anchored by the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the city evolved as a royal and sacred capital. Its urban form is compact, layered, and constrained by topography. Roads curve. Development climbs slopes. Growth is inward and limited.Galle, in contrast, opens outward to the Indian Ocean. The historic Galle Fort reflects colonial planning principles — structured grids, fortifications, and maritime orientation. The city’s identity is coastal, commercial, and globally connected.

    city for women

Most urban planning has historically assumed a “typical user”:A man commuting from home to work and back. But women’s everyday journeys are far more complex — combining work, childcare, shopping, caregiving, and often navigating safety concerns along the way.In the latest episode of my podcast Spaces & Stories, I explore City Planning for Women and why gender-responsive planning leads to safer, more inclusive, and more liveable cities for everyone.Key ideas from the episode:• Safety is not just statistics — it’s the feeling of safety• Walkable, mixed-use neighbourhoods support daily life• Inclusive transport enables independence and opportunity• Cities that work for women work better for all🎧 Listen to the episode and join the conversation on how we can design cities that support every story.
