As social media trends and influencer culture drive a relentless cycle of consumption, viewers will witness how the allure of instant gratification leads to increased waste generation. We delve into the consequences of substance usage and disposal, highlighting the challenges faced by waste management systems in coping with the surge of discarded materials. From tiny homes to tiny packages in oversized boxes, we explore how managing waste can help de-influence our lives and reshape our habits.

Episode 7: Bin There, Done That
Within this episode, we dive into the critical challenges facing waste management today. We explore the pressing issue of unsustainable practices that contribute to environmental degradation and the lack of accessibility that leads to illegal dumping in our communities. Additionally, we discuss how overburdened waste facilities struggle to keep up with the increasing volume of waste due to rampant over-consumption. With the insight of our special guest, we explore lived experiences around waste management in the Pacific Islands. After moving to the U.S., the process of actively learning how to sort and dispose of waste became a transformative experience—reshaping daily habits and perspectives on environmental responsibility and the importance of land stewardship.

Then, we dive into the challenges: over-policing, climate discomforts, safety concerns, and lack of funding. From 4/20 at Hippie Hill to PIEFEST’s robotics fair, this episode captures how public spaces can uplift—or fall short—depending on how they’re managed and who they serve.

We examine the obstacles faced by individuals who struggle with navigating the stigma of being labeled as “unhoused” or “homeless” with experiences from a guest speaker. Our discussion also emphasizes the vital concerns of accessibility to applications and resources. Additionally, we'll explore the dynamics of multigenerational households and the often-overlooked experiences shaped by the cultural subtleties of being "back home." Join us as we uncover the layers of these important topics and amplify the voices that often go unheard amidst the noise.

Episode 2: Cracks in the Foundation
In this episode we uncover the often overlooked and indirect consequences of construction in San Francisco. We look at the effects on public transportation as a result of construction sites, whether that is through detours or even longer wait times. While the creation of new spaces, including cultural districts has allowed for increased visibility this also allows for community input and engagement when construction begins. Lastly, we bring light to the on-going issue of limited parking – which in turn, leaves residents feeling frustrated.

As new projects break ground, comes along with the creation of employment opportunities for skilled workers alike. Yet, as we focus on the cost of environmental degradation, air and noise pollution affecting members of the community -- things take a different turn. The exposure to harmful chemicals and elements pose health risks for both workers and residents, while the heavy machinery combined with unpredictable worksite conditions allow for safety hazards. As living expenses continue to increase, public housing plays a crucial role for low-income marginalized communities. When individuals are compelled to spend a significant share of their income on essential needs like rent, utilities, and transportation, they have less money left for healthier food options. We also emphasize the importance of public housing locations in relation to stores that offer fresh produce and superior food choices. Our focus is on the reality that many people are merely in survival mode, doing whatever it takes to get by.
