CMIF: Banking on Change - How Transition Finance is Redefining Mining
In this episode, we unpack what “transition finance” means in practice—moving beyond mere labels to the hard levers of industrial decarbonisation. The discussion dives into financing pathways for steel and mining: electrified and biofuel haul fleets, trolley-assist, renewable Purchase Power Agreements, and designing new projects for net zero from day one (not retrofitting later). We explore how credible ESG performance links directly to investor confidence and permitting, why showing “what good looks like” on site can reset perceptions of modern mining, and where circularity and recycling may scale next. The talent challenge also takes centre stage—how automation and AI change the skills map and why early, hands-on experience still matters. Finally, we connect geopolitics and tariffs to risk, valuations, and cost of capital—arguing for pragmatic, fundamentals-led finance of real, needed hard assets.Speakers on this episode:Catriona Bell | Director - Transition Finance | Standard CharterAssheton Stewart Carter | Executive Chair & Founder - TDi SustainabilityThis episode is part of the TDi Sustainability special series of podcasts produced in advance of the Critical Minerals Innovation Forum (CMIF) event that will take place in London between 5 & 6 November 2025. CMIF: Artisanal Mining in the New Minerals Era
The rush for critical minerals increasingly requires sourcing from artisanal and small-scale mining, raising concerns about potential human rights abuses, land degradation and conflict, yet at the same time offering potential opportunities for economic growth, employment and vital contributions to supply chains if properly regulated. In this podcast, our speakers explore what the new minerals era means for ASM, taking a pragmatic look at formalisation of the sector, drawing on examples from the DRC. They examine how stakeholders at all stages of the critical mineral supply chain can and should navigate the intersection of high mineral dependency, geopolitical uncertainty and human and environmental risks. Finally, they take a look at how large-scale mining and ASM can potentially come together - exploring parallels from other industries. From Conflict Minerals to Collective Action | Evaluating the Evolving Sustainability Landscape
In this episode of TDi Insights In Conversation, TDi Sustainability's Marketing Manager, Sarah Wilkinson, sits down with CEO Assheton Stewart Carter to reflect on, and celebrate, TDi's first decade. When Assheton founded TDi ten years ago, a major focus of the company's work was working with large brands on conflict minerals. The last ten years has seen a rapid evolution of the sustainability landscape, particularly in terms of regulations - sustainability concerns are no longer the domain of the biggest. Responsible sourcing now covers all products, all materials, all countries and all companies. This rapid expansion has been coupled with growing expectations both from stakeholders and in terms of the information that companies must gather on their supply chains. Assheton discusses how TDi itself has evolved to meet these challenges - enabling companies to go beyond compliance to have a real impact on the ground. He then reflects on the key sustainability themes that businesses are likely to have to address over the near and long-term future.
