Episode 9 - Waverly Hills Sanatorium

The area known today as “Waverly Hill” was purchased by Major Thomas H. Hays in 1883 as the Hays’ family home. Since any existing schools were a good distance away, Hays decided to establish a one room schoolhouse for his children to attend and hired Ms. Lizzie Lee Harris as the teacher. Ms. Harris had a fondness for author Walter Scott’s Waverley novels, and she received Hays’ permission to name the schoolhouse the Waverley School. In turn, he renamed his property Waverley Hill. At the beginning of the 20th century, Louisville, Kentucky, had the one of the highest rates of tuberculosis deaths in the United States. The beginnings of industrialism, as well as geographic make-up were contributing factors. Nestled in the Ohio Valley, Louisville doesn’t get a proper amount of fresh air flow. In an attempt to contain the disease, a “Board of Tuberculosis Hospital” was established in 1906. The search began for a proper location to construct the much-needed facility. Eventually Hays’ property was chosen for several reasons; it’sdistance from the city, its picturesque tranquil view, as well as its high altitude with increased air flow. The Board decided to keep the name Waverly, as it had a peaceful sound to it.To find out more, you'll need to listen to this week's episode. Episode 8: El Coco

Sleep, child, sleep now,The coco is coming and will takeyou.Sleep, child, sleep now,The coco is coming and will eat you. The rhyme originated in the 17th century and has evolved over the years but still retains its original meaning. El Coco is a monster common to many Spanish-speaking countries. In Spain, parents will sing lullabies or tell rhymes, like the one I recited above, to children, warning them that if they do not sleep, El Coco will come to get them.Sources used for this episode - Coco (folklore) | Villains Wiki | FandomEl Cucuy - Bogeyman in Spanish Folklore | mythicalcreatures.infoCoco | Myth and Folklore Wiki | FandomContact information -Email: [email protected]: @supernaturallyparanormalpodFacebook: Supernaturally Paranormal Podcast

    Episode 6: Lydia's Bridge

North Carolina has its share of ghost stories, unexplained phenomena, and tales of the supernatural. In Guilford County, in the North Carolina town of Jamestown, comes one such tale. It’s the tale of the spirit of a young woman who haunts the underpasses of two bridges: one is a railroad bridge over east Main Street, which is currently in use, and the other is of an abandoned bridge nearby. The abandoned underpass may the site of a fatal car accident many years ago. Whispers of this legend have persisted for a century, echoing the tragedyof a young woman named Lydia, wearing a white dress and returning from a dance when disaster struck on a rainy night in the 1920s. Her date lost control of their vehicle, slamming into a bridge. Lydia did not survive the crash, so begins the tale of the vanishing hitchhiker of Jamestown, North Carolina.Sources:Lydia: The Ghost of Jamestown Bridge | NCpediaLYDIA’S BRIDGE | William G.
