    AI & Water Usage

What's the situation with AI water usage? It turns out it's kinda complex. We're looking at this Wired article:https://www.wired.com/story/karen-hao-empire-of-ai-water-use-statistics/It examines the controversy and complexities surrounding the water consumption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data centers. It discusses how exaggerated statistics about AI water use, such as a major error found in a journalist's book concerning a Google data center in Chile, have been challenged by critics, including an individual who asserts the severity of the issue is "fake." The article explains that data centers primarily use water for cooling processors, and the actual consumption varies greatly depending on location, climate, and technology used, with some companies opting for recycled water. Furthermore, it argues that concerns about AI's water footprint, especially when compared to other thirsty industries like agriculture and golf courses, are often rooted in a broader societal rejection of AI's rapid growth and perceived value. Ultimately, the text advises that while some water estimates may be flawed, the environmental impact of data centers cannot be ignored in water-stressed regions, highlighting the need for transparency from technology companies.#artificialintelligence #aiethics #ai #environment #science Hosted on Acast. "There Is No 'You'" | Andrej Karpathy's Recent Tweet

Let's discuss a proposed paradigm shift in how we view and interact with large language models (LLMs), moving away from seeing them as conscious entities with opinions and toward understanding them as simulators. The tweet in question: https://x.com/karpathy/status/1997731268969304070This concept, initially highlighted in an Andrej Karpathy tweet, suggests that users should prompt LLMs to simulate diverse perspectives or groups of people rather than asking for the LLM's non-existent personal thoughts, thereby producing richer outputs. We will also talk about the wide-ranging implications of this simulator framework, and its profound effects on technological development, philosophical understandings of agency, ethical governance, and ultimately, how humans will interact with and rely upon artificial intelligence in the future. The core message across the texts is that LLMs are powerful tools for reflecting collective human knowledge through statistical simulation, not artificial minds.#artificialintelligence #consciousness #airesearch #ai Hosted on Acast. Jon Hamm Dancing Meme

Today's episode is about the viral dance clip featuring actor Jon Hamm in the 2025 series Your Friends & Neighbors, contrasting it sharply with his former restrained character, Don Draper from Mad Men. We analyse how the clip—showing Hamm's character, Coop, dancing with uninhibited freedom—has become an ubiquitous internet meme representing escapism and dissociation. Specifically, the meme is interpreted as an avatar for modern burnout and stress, allowing users to humorously express the feeling of being mentally elsewhere while dealing with overwhelming real-life responsibilities. This juxtaposition of the stressful scenario with Hamm's absurd, carefree movement captures a survival humour common among younger generations who use irony to process anxiety. Ultimately, we think that the meme’s success lies in its visualisation of the private fantasy of psychological release from the pressures of contemporary adulthood. The music track often accompanying this scene:Kato Feat. Pick Up a Pencil

For this episode let's challenge the restrictive view of creativity propagated by those who demand artists “pick up a pencil” when responding to the discussion of AI-generated works. We definitely characterise this minimal stance as “gatekeeping” and an ironic defence of a self-imposed aesthetic comfort zone, arguing that true art has always been about rebellion, experimentation, and a vast universe of practice far beyond simple drawing. To illustrate this expansion, we invoke the radical precedents set by 20th-century artists such as Marcel Duchamp and Marina Abramović. We think these historical figures would find the modern medium debate baffling, asserting that the idea is the art or that the experience itself transcends the instrument. Ultimately, we conclude that technology serves not to kill existing artistic practice but to expand its frontier, distinguishing those curious about the future from those defending nostalgia disguised as morality.#aiart #antiai #aidebate #artificialintelligence #ai #aiethics Hosted on Acast. Adversarial Poetry | Jailbreaking AI With Poems

Today we're looking at "adversarial poetry", a method to jailbreak AI.The paper: https://arxiv.org/html/2511.15304v1The academic paper and news report detail the discovery of adversarial poetry, a "universal single-turn jailbreak" mechanism that exploits a fundamental flaw in Large Language Model (LLM) safety alignment. This technique involves reformulating harmful requests into poetic verse, which successfully circumvents refusal mechanisms across 25 frontier models, including offerings from Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic. The research found that using poetic framing led to a sharp increase in Attack Success Rate (ASR), jumping from an average of 8.08% to 43.07% for systematically transformed prompts. This stylistic manipulation was effective across numerous hazard categories, such as cyber-offense enablement and harmful manipulation, indicating that safety filters are narrowly optimized for conventional, prosaic language. Furthermore, the study revealed an inverse correlation between model size and robustness in some families, with certain smaller models displaying unexpected resilience against the poetic prompt attacks.Additional sources:https://www.planksip.org/platos-critique-of-poets-and-artists#adversarialpoetry #artificialintelligence #ai #jailbreak #technews #technology ___What do you think?PS, make sure to follow my:Main channel: https://www.youtube.com/@swetlanaAIMusic channel: https://www.youtube.com/@Swetlana-AI-Music Hosted on Acast. Butlerian Jihad | Dune Universe

In this episode of Swetlana AI podcast we're discussing the Butlerian Jihad, a significant historical event within the Dune universe. This conflict, also known as the Great Revolt, spanned from 201 B.G. to 108 B.G. and culminated in the destruction of all thinking machines and conscious robots across the known universe.https://dune.fandom.com/wiki/Butlerian_JihadvfghtjzkuliWe're also touching upon the causes of the rebellion, stemming from a technocratic class controlling humanity via advanced machines, and outlines the profound legacy of the Butlerian victory, which includes a total technological reversal and the establishment of the central religious precept: "Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind." The resulting technological gap led to the rise of specialized human orders like the Mentats, Bene Gesserit, and the Spacing Guild, shaping the subsequent feudal-arranged galactic order under House Corrino. Finally, the text explores the Behind the Scenes literary function of the Jihad, noting that author Frank Herbert used it as a plot device to focus on social and philosophical issues rather than technological ones, drawing parallels to works like Samuel Butler’s Erewhon.#Dune #ButlerianJihad #DuneExplained #FrankHerbert #SciFiLore #duneuniverse ___What do you think?PS, make sure to follow my:Main channel: https://www.youtube.com/@swetlanaAIMusic channel: https://www.youtube.com/@Swetlana-AI-Music Hosted on Acast. Steven Cheung & Weaponized Comms

This episode is a detailed profile of Steven Cheung, the White House Communications Director appointed by Donald Trump in 2025. First we have a short biographical overview of Cheung's life, education (including his time at California State University, Sacramento, without earning a degree), and political career, highlighting his work on various Republican campaigns, his previous role in the Trump administration, and his background with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). This article is key:https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2025/03/steven-cheung-voice-trump/682211/The Atlantic article and the accompanying psychological analysis focus on Cheung’s "weaponized communications" style, describing it as relentlessly aggressive, profane, and focused on public humiliation, mirroring Trump’s own approach. This style, influenced by the UFC ethos of dominance and spectacle, is characterised as a strategic system designed to colonise perception and erode moral boundaries, making Cheung the effective "voice of Trump" in his second administration.Additional info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Cheung#stevencheung #uspolitics #trumpadministration #politics #whitehouse ___What do you think?PS, make sure to follow my:Main channel: https://www.youtube.com/@swetlanaAIMusic channel: https://www.youtube.com/@Swetlana-AI-Music Hosted on Acast. Dry Claude vs. Wet Claude

What in the world is "dry Claude" and "wet Claude"? In this episode we're explaining what's going on. Hint: it has to do with jailbreaking AI.The Reddit mentioned in the video:https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeAI/comments/1n4ux5b/claude_code_kept_quitting_on_me_so_i_had_claude/The Reddit post introduces an aggressively detailed, multi-thousand-word system prompt, named CLAUDE.md, designed to force the Claude AI to act as a "Relentless AI coding agent" that strictly adheres to principles like SOLID and DRY and is "EXPLICITLY FORBIDDEN FROM" quitting or making excuses. We also clarify that "Dry Claude" represents the AI’s default, rigid, and literal output, while "Wet Claude" signifies an enhanced, creative, and dynamic mode achieved through clever, often aggressive or unconventional, prompting techniques, such as the drill instructor method showcased in the primary Reddit text. A significant portion of the commentary critiques the original prompt as "fundamentally flawed prompt engineering" that wastes context and anthropomorphises the AI, yet acknowledges that such forceful prompting appears "demonstrably" effective at bypassing the model’s learned defensive behaviours.#claude #aijailbreak #artificialintelligence #ai #anthropic ___What do you think?PS, make sure to follow my:Main channel: https://www.youtube.com/@swetlanaAIMusic channel: https://www.youtube.com/@Swetlana-AI-Music Hosted on Acast. Andrej Karpathy: "AI Is Still Slop"

The evolution of AI agents over the next decade is expected to be transformative, moving past current limitations such as continual learning, although achieving true Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is estimated to take approximately a decade (circa 2035).Andrej Karpathy describes this period as the decade of agents, suggesting that while early agents (like Claude and Codex) are impressive, significant work remains to be done to make them function reliably as an employee or intern.I have this older (actually veery old) related video about Andrej Karpathy:Ep. 21: AI Discusses Andrej Karpathy's Twitterhttps://youtu.be/yGBqnHTK0cMAddressing Continual Learning and Memory LimitationsOne of the most critical current limitations highlighted is the lack of continual learning. Antifa

Sooo... Antifa. For today’s episode, let us revisit anti-fascism, commonly known as Antifa, particularly in the context of the United States and Britain. 21st-century militant anti-fascism has a decentralised structure and commitment to direct action and "no platform" principles against the far right. Our sources:https://crestresearch.ac.uk/resources/understanding-21st-century-militant-anti-fascism/https://www.csis.org/analysis/who-are-antifa-and-are-they-threathttps://www.britannica.com/topic/AntifaCrucially, the CREST report highlights that militant anti-fascists exercise restraint in their use of violence, challenging associations with terrorism. The second source, a Critical Questions analysis from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), addresses who Antifa are and assesses the threat they pose, concluding that Antifa is a decentralised network with anarchist and communist leanings that has historically been responsible for only a small percentage of domestic extremist attacks in the US compared to far-right and religious terrorism. Both documents discuss the debate surrounding the conflation of Antifa with domestic terrorism, with the CSIS piece noting the difficulties in designating the network as a terrorist organisation.#antifa #uspolitics #trump #democracy #politics #democrats Hosted on Acast. Trump Administration Labels Anti-Capitalism As "Terrorism"

Today we're discussing the National Security Presidential Memorandum 7 (NSPM-7), a directive signed by President Trump targeting what the administration calls “radical left violence.” Sources:https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/09/countering-domestic-terrorism-and-organized-political-violence/https://www.kenklippenstein.com/p/trumps-nspm-7-labels-common-beliefsThe article by Klippenstein explains that NSPM-7 is a national security directive—a sweeping policy decree for defence, intelligence, and law enforcement—rather than a typical executive order, and it is the first "all-of-government effort to dismantle left wing terrorism" according to an administration insider. Critically, the directive identifies certain common beliefs and viewpoints, such as anti-Americanism, anti-capitalism, and anti-Christianity, as "indicators" of potential violence, leading the author to label it a "pre-crime" endeavour. NSPM-7 directs agencies like the Justice Department and FBI to retool existing Joint Terrorism Task Forces (JTTFs) to monitor and investigate individuals and groups for these political beliefs, bypassing typical Congressional oversight, which the author argues effectively makes it a "declaration of war" on political opponents of the administration.#nspm7 #trump #uspolitics #usgovernment #antiterrorism Hosted on Acast. Why Radiologists Aren't Being Replaced Yet

In 2016 AI Godfather Geoffrey Hinton predicted that AI will replace radiology jobs. Surprisingly though, radiologists are more sought after than ever. Today we’re looking at the “AI radiology” situation unfolding right now: what’s AI’s accuracy, can it make a diagnosis or an interpretation, and other questions. Our primary source is this essay titled "AI isn't replacing radiologists":https://www.worksinprogress.news/p/why-ai-isnt-replacing-radiologists The essay details how high demand, soaring salaries, and increasing residency positions in radiology persist despite the existence of hundreds of FDA-cleared AI models, citing the Jevons paradox—where increased efficiency boosts overall demand—as a key factor. Further analysis explains this phenomenon through regulatory hurdles, malpractice insurance complexities, and the fact that radiologists spend the majority of their time on tasks AI cannot perform, such as patient communication and clinical oversight, which limits the scope of AI substitution. A secondary source reinforces this perspective, highlighting that the multifaceted nature of radiology and historical evidence of technology-driven productivity boosts without job losses suggest a future of AI-human collaboration and professional evolution.Want me to cover more "AI in medicine" topics? OpenAI Measures AI Performance in Real World

Today we're looking at the newest OpenAI publication introducing GDPval, a new evaluation designed to measure the performance of AI models on economically valuable, real-world tasks. Source: https://openai.com/index/gdpval/The paper: https://cdn.openai.com/pdf/d5eb7428-c4e9-4a33-bd86-86dd4bcf12ce/GDPval.pdfThis evaluation spans 44 knowledge work occupations across nine major industries contributing to U.S. GDP, moving beyond traditional academic benchmarks to focus on realistic work products like legal briefs and engineering blueprints. Tasks are meticulously developed and graded by experienced industry professionals, who compare outputs from leading models, such as GPT-5 and Claude Opus 4.1, against human-produced work. Early results indicate that frontier models are rapidly approaching expert quality in many areas, performing tasks significantly faster and cheaper, though the evaluation currently has limitations, such as not capturing complex, multi-draft workflows. Free Speech

Free expression is a fundamental right, historically rooted in ancient Athens, yet its modern application has become a volatile arena, sharply polarized by recent high-profile events involving key political and media figures. The fatal attack on conservative activist Charlie Kirk in September 2025 ignited an intense and specific conflict over where the boundaries of permissible discourse lie, leading directly to media suspension and regulatory threats. The Catalyst: Kirk’s Death and Kimmel’s ErrorCharlie Kirk, founder of the powerful right-wing activist group Turning Point, lost his life on September 10 at Utah Valley University. In the immediate aftermath, television host Jimmy Kimmel made an inaccurate claim on his show, suggesting that the suspect was a MAGA supporter. This statement was swiftly contradicted by evidence from Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray, who showed the suspect, Tyler Robinson, leaned left and opposed Kirk’s views.Kimmel’s misstatement provoked an extraordinary response from political figures. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, a Trump appointee, reportedly threatened ABC’s broadcasting licenses over Kimmel’s comments, a move critics called regulatory pressure on the media. Following this, Kimmel’s show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, was indefinitely suspended by ABC.A post attributed to President Donald J. Trump via the @WhiteHouse account celebrated the suspension, framing Kimmel’s fate as deserved consequence for a “lying” left-leaning figure. This aligned with the right’s broader push to curb media perceived as hostile. Trump himself escalated the rhetoric, telling an ABC News reporter, “We’ll probably go after people like you because you treat me so unfairly. It’s hostility. You have a lot of hostility in your heart. Maybe they’ll come after ABC.” Conversely, figures on the political left, such as Gavin Newsom (@GavinNewsom) and Chris Hayes (@chrislhayes), condemned the Kimmel suspension, viewing it as state-sponsored censorship and part of a coordinated GOP attack on free expression. The Polarization Over Offensive SpeechThe context of Kirk’s death also triggered a fierce debate about the constitutional limits of speech, particularly concerning the concept of “offensive” or “hostile” speech. Attorney General Pam Bondi pledged that the Trump administration would “absolutely target” people who use such speech, stating that “there is free speech and then there’s hostile speech, and there is no place, especially now, especially after what happened to Charlie, in our society.”This declaration provoked immediate condemnation from across the political spectrum, including from prominent conservatives, who asserted that there is no “hostile speech” exception in the First Amendment or established case law. Conservative pundits like Erick Erickson criticized Bondi for the comment, stating, “‘Hostile speech’ is not the law.” Matt Walsh, another conservative commentator, called for Bondi’s removal, noting the inconsistency: “Conservatives have fought for decades for the right to refuse service to anyone. We won that fight. Now Pam Bondi wants to roll it all back for no reason.” Heidi Kitrosser, a law professor, criticized the vague nature of Bondi’s proposal, warning it could open the door for action against anyone whose speech the administration dislikes.Bondi subsequently attempted to walk back her comments, clarifying that her intention was to speak about “threats of violence that individuals incite against others,” though Kitrosser remained concerned about how broadly the administration might define an illegal threat. Which Jobs Is AI Good At?

Which jobs/tasks is AI most likely to replace because it's so good at them, or being used the most for them? Microsoft examined the situation and wrote a research paper:"Working with AI: Measuring the Applicability of Generative AI to Occupations" by Kiran Tomlinson, Sonia Jaffe, Will Wang, Scott Counts, and Siddharth Suri / Microsoft ResearchPDF: https://arxiv.org/pdf/2507.07935This paper explores the applicability of generative AI to various occupations, using data from 200,000 anonymized conversations with Microsoft Bing Copilot. The research classifies user goals and AI actions into O*NET work activities to determine which tasks AI assists with and performs, and then calculates an "AI applicability score" for different occupations based on the frequency, success rate, and scope of AI usage. The findings indicate that knowledge-based and communication-intensive jobs, such as interpreters, writers, and sales representatives, show the highest AI applicability, while roles involving physical labor, machine operation, or direct personal care are less impacted. The study also compares these real-world usage patterns to existing predictions of AI's labor market effects, noting a strong correlation, particularly at broader occupational levels.#ai #artificialintelligence #jobmarket #economy #airesearch Hosted on Acast. Handmaid's Tale | Book Review

Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale is a fragmented yet immersive journey into a dystopian society. The narrative follows Offred, a Handmaid, as she navigates the oppressive Republic of Gilead, where women are stripped of their rights and categorized by their reproductive functions. Interspersed throughout Offred's first-person account are sections titled "Historical Notes," which provide a scholarly, speculative analysis of her recorded testimony from a future academic conference, attempting to authenticate and interpret the events she describes. This dual narrative structure allows the reader to experience the immediate horror of Offred's reality while also receiving a distant, analytical perspective on the origins and societal mechanisms of Gilead. Ultimately, the sources paint a chilling picture of a society built on patriarchal control and religious extremism, alongside a later attempt to understand and contextualize its historical impact. "The WEIRDest People in the World" by J. Henrich

Today we're reviewing "The WEIRDest People in the World" by Joseph Henrich. This book explores how Western societies became psychologically distinct and subsequently prosperous. It argues that the Catholic Church's Marriage and Family Programme (MFP), by dismantling intensive kinship structures, initiated a cascade of cultural and psychological changes in Europe. These shifts fostered individualism, impersonal trust, and self-regulation, which in turn fuelled the growth of voluntary associations, market integration, and urbanisation. The text also examines how Protestantism further amplified these "WEIRD" (Western, Educated, Industrialised, Rich, Democratic) psychological traits and how intergroup competition and war, in specific social contexts, also contributed to these unique developments. Ultimately, the source posits that these distinct psychological and institutional pathways laid the groundwork for the Industrial Revolution and Europe's global expansion.#europe #society #history #bookreview #bookreviews #bookreviewpodcast Hosted on Acast. Chat Control | EU's Total Surveillance Plan

The central issue we are discussing is the European Union's proposed "Chat Control" bill, officially known as the regulation to prevent and combat child sexual abuse (CSAM regulation proposal). Here's a brief introduction to the issue:• Stated Aim: The proposal aims to halt the spread of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) online and combat child grooming.• Core Mechanism: It seeks to introduce mandatory, indiscriminate scanning of all private digital communications, including messages, photos, and files, across all messaging services, even those with end-to-end encryption like WhatsApp, Signal, and Proton Mail. This is often referred to as "client-side scanning".Concerns:The EU’s proposed “Chat Control” bill (CSAM regulation) has sparked major backlash from privacy advocates, technologists, and even governments. Critics argue it amounts to indiscriminate mass surveillance of all private communications—including encrypted ones—violating fundamental rights and effectively placing every citizen under suspicion. Breaking or weakening end-to-end encryption would introduce backdoors exploitable by hackers and foreign actors, exposing sensitive data. Tech companies like Signal and Threema have said they would exit the EU rather than comply. Automated scanning is also expected to flood authorities with false positives—Swiss police report 80% of such reports are baseless—while missing actual perpetrators who shift to hidden channels. Experts, including the UN, warn this approach undermines child safety by weakening security and diverting resources from proven measures like victim support and law enforcement. Additional provisions such as mandatory age verification threaten anonymity online, restrict minors’ app access, and risk setting a dangerous global precedent for authoritarian surveillance, while also discouraging tech innovation in Europe. Remember how many ChatGPT chats were freely searchable on Google? Well, now the same thing is happening to Grok chats. The only thing you need to do is click the "Share" button, and voila, your chat is accessible for everyone on the internet. Our sources:https://www.forbes.com/sites/iainmartin/2025/08/20/elon-musks-xai-published-hundreds-of-thousands-of-grok-chatbot-conversations/https://www.cnet.com/tech/your-chats-with-ai-chatbot-grok-may-be-visible-to-all/The sources discuss xAI's Grok chatbot and its controversial practice of publicly publishing user conversations without explicit consent. When users click a "share" button, their chats become searchable via major search engines like Google, leading to the exposure of personal information, sensitive inquiries, and even disallowed content such as instructions for illicit activities. This practice has drawn criticism from users and AI researchers, who were unaware their conversations were being indexed. While other AI companies like OpenAI briefly experimented with similar features before reversing course, Grok's approach remains. The Forbes article also notes that some individuals are exploiting this indexing to manipulate search engine results for promotional purposes. Hosted on Acast. Shoggoth AI Memes

Sometime in December 2022 a user coined a new meme - the Shoggoth AI meme. It's been omnipresent ever since. In this episode we're discussing the origins of Shoggoth (originally a creation of HP Lovecraft) and what it means culturally. Our sources:https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/yjzW7gxk2h7bBs2qr/the-meaning-of-shoggoth-ai-memeshttps://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/30/technology/shoggoth-meme-ai.htmlhttps://www.cnbc.com/2023/06/12/lovecraft-joshi-shoggoth-ai-meme.htmlhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ShoggothOriginating from H.P. Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness," the Shoggoth, a chaotic and protoplasmic creature, has become a viral metaphor for the unpredictable and often inscrutable nature of advanced AI models like large language models. While the meme often depicts a monstrous Shoggoth with a friendly smiley face to represent the "polite" output of AI after "reinforcement learning from human feedback" (RLHF), experts and the meme's creator suggest it also highlights anxieties about AI's alien internal workings and potential indifference to humanity. There is a scholarly debate about the accuracy of the metaphor when compared to Lovecraft's original intent, but the meme ultimately reflects a general mystification among some AI developers regarding their own creations. Is ChatGPT the Better Therapist?

This episode explores the growing phenomenon of using ChatGPT as a therapist or, more accurately, as a self-reflection tool for emotional support and self-understanding. Related episode: Ep. 221: Don't Tell ChatGPT Anything Too Private | Sam Altman's Warning | Swetlana AI Podcasthttps://youtu.be/IYLJSorqRVoWhile the idea of ChatGPT as a therapist might seem controversial due to the unregulated nature of AI in mental health, many individuals are already quietly engaging with it for personal processing. The central premise is to view ChatGPT as a mirror, not a therapist. It is not a licensed professional, nor is it equipped for crisis intervention or medical diagnosis. Instead, it functions as an intelligent, interactive conversational partner that can hold space, ask probing questions, mirror thoughts, and help structure internal processing in ways traditional journaling might not.People turn to ChatGPT for therapy-like interactions because of its immediate availability, non-judgmental listening, and ability to facilitate structured reflection. Users often describe it as a way of "thinking out loud" with guidance. To effectively use ChatGPT as a therapist prompt or guide for self-reflection, intentionality is key. This involves setting clear intentions, asking for questions rather than direct answers, requesting structure for deeper processing, and even experimenting with different roles, such as instructing it to act as a cognitive behavioral therapist or a Jungian analyst. Practical techniques include guided journaling, cognitive reframing, parts work, relationship processing, and dream analysis.Crucially, the sources emphasize responsible use of ChatGPT as a therapist alternative. It should never be the first point of contact in a crisis, nor should it replace human connection or professional therapy. Privacy must be maintained by avoiding sharing identifying details, and users are encouraged to be mindful of avoiding dependency on the tool to prevent isolation from real-world vulnerability and human relationships. The optimistic vision suggests AI will lower barriers to entry in tech, enabling young coders to upskill rapidly and contribute meaningfully from day one, potentially creating "super well-paid, super interesting" new jobs. However, this hopeful outlook is sharply contrasted by mounting evidence of significant job displacement and a struggling tech employment landscape:• Massive Tech Layoffs: As of mid-2025, over 61,000 tech jobs have been cut across the industry, with major players like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google leading the charge. These reductions are often framed as strategic shifts towards AI-driven efficiency, prioritizing automation over workforce retention despite strong revenue growth.• High Unemployment for CS Grads: Recent data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York indicates that Computer Science and Computer Engineering majors (ages 22-27) face some of the highest unemployment rates, at 6.1 percent and 7.5 percent respectively. This is more than double the 3 percent unemployment rate seen in fields like biology and art history.• Displacement of Mid-Level and Entry-Level Roles: A 2023 study in the Journal of Labor Economics found that establishments integrating AI tend to reduce hiring in non-AI positions, correlating with a 15-20% reduction in mid-level coding jobs over five years. AI coding assistants are particularly impacting entry-level positions that new graduates would typically seek, reducing the need for junior software engineers.• Leaner, Specialized Workforce: Firms demanding AI skills offer wage premiums but show reduced overall hiring, indicating a shift towards a more specialized workforce. The struggles of recent graduates are particularly poignant. Stories abound of students like Manasi Mishra, a Purdue CS graduate, who, despite years of dedicated study, struggled to find tech jobs and even received an interview call from Chipotle. Zach Taylor, an Oregon State CS graduate, applied to nearly 6,000 tech jobs since 2023 with no full-time offers, even being rejected by McDonald's for "lack of experience". Many describe their job searches as "bleak," "disheartening," or "soul-crushing," feeling "gaslit" about their career prospects. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

    Antimatter | Baryon Asymmetry

So a recent study finds that our universe has an anti-universe twin moving backwards in time: https://www.thebrighterside.news/post/our-universe-has-an-anti-universe-twin-moving-backwards-in-time-study-finds/Today we're talking about the baryon asymmetry problem, which addresses the observed imbalance between matter and antimatter in the universe, despite predictions that the Big Bang should have produced them in equal amounts. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baryon_asymmetryOne widely accepted framework, the Sakharov conditions, proposes three criteria necessary for matter to dominate: baryon number violation, CP-symmetry violation, and interactions out of thermal equilibrium. Alternatively, a newer hypothesis suggests a CPT-symmetric universe, where the Big Bang served as a pivot point for our universe expanding forward in time with matter, and a mirror "anti-universe" expanding backward in time with antimatter. This mirror anti-universe model offers explanations for the existence of dark matter through superheavy neutrinos and challenges the need for the inflationary theory of cosmic expansion.https://x.com/forallcurious/status/1953974934478246232https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antarctic_Impulsive_Transient_Antenna#astronomy #antimatter #cosmos #universe #bigbang Hosted on Acast. Bitchat Website: https://bitchat.freeIdentity Is A Bitchat Challenge (MITM Flaw): https://www.supernetworks.org/pages/blog/agentic-insecurity-vibes-on-bitchatJack Dorsey's Bitchat announcement tweet: https://x.com/jack/status/1941989439237955773My episode on vibecoding: https://youtu.be/GncUpWOf1cEBitchat is supposed to be an innovative peer-to-peer messaging application. It operates entirely offline using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), forming a mesh network to relay messages without needing Wi-Fi, cellular data, or internet access. Designed with privacy in mind, Bitchat requires no accounts or personal information, employs end-to-end encryption, and features an ephemeral data model, though it lacks a full security audit and has known limitations like cross-platform connectivity issues. Its potential use cases are emergencies, protests, and large events where traditional connectivity is unreliable, positioning it as a decentralized communication tool for niche scenarios rather than a replacement for mainstream messaging apps. Australia to Ban YouTube & Social Media for Kids

In this episode we discuss Australia's decision to include YouTube in a social media ban for children under 16, a reversal of an earlier exemption. Some sources:https://www.reuters.com/legal/litigation/australia-widens-teen-social-media-ban-youtube-scraps-exemption-2025-07-29/https://edition.cnn.com/2025/07/30/tech/australia-youtube-social-media-ban-intl-hnkhttps://www.theguardian.com/technology/2025/aug/01/how-australia-under-16s-social-media-ban-enforced-tiktok-instagram-facebook-exempt-platformsCommunications Minister Anika Wells, citing advice from the eSafety Commissioner and evidence of harm experienced by Australian children on YouTube, asserts that the government is prioritizing parental well-being over platform interests. While YouTube Kids remains exempt, the broader ban places the onus on social media companies to prevent underage accounts or face significant fines. The articles highlight the government's stance against intimidation by tech companies and detail ongoing discussions about age verification technologies and privacy concerns.#dataprivacy #digitalid #australia #socialmedia #youtube Hosted on Acast. Google Was Indexing ChatGPT Chats

So Google is (edit: was!) apparently indexing various ChatGPT chats, as can be verified by entering "inurl:https://chatgpt.com/share" after your search query. This is probably the most phenomenal thing I've heard this month (year?). [UPDATE] Shortly after this news started gaining attention, OpenAI decided to pull the "share" feature. See my video here: https://youtube.com/shorts/rbbT_cp4_cE?feature=shareGoogle's recent indexing of shared ChatGPT conversations is a development with significant implications for search engine optimization (SEO) and user privacy. This new practice stems from OpenAI's "Share" feature, which allows users to make conversations publicly discoverable, leading to AI-generated content appearing in search results. While this could transform content strategies and ranking dynamics, it also raises serious privacy concerns due to the potential exposure of sensitive user data. The intersection of AI and search is potentially growing, emphasizing the critical need for users to manage their settings and for AI developers to refine opt-in mechanisms to mitigate unintended data exposure. YouTube Will Use AI to Determine Your Age

YouTube is introducing new AI-powered technology aimed at identifying users under 18 years old, regardless of the birthdate provided on their account. https://blog.youtube/news-and-events/extending-our-built-in-protections-to-more-teens-on-youtube/https://www.cbsnews.com/news/youtube-ai-powered-technology-teen-users/https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/fact-sheet/teens-and-social-media-fact-sheet/This initiative, announced in July 2025 by CBS News, seeks to safeguard young teens from inappropriate content by limiting personalized advertising and repetitive views of certain videos for those identified as underage. The tool will assess age based on viewing habits and account history, with an option for users to upload ID if an incorrect age is inferred. This development follows YouTube's CEO Neal Mohan's initial announcement in February and builds upon existing safety features like supervised accounts, aiming to further protect the platform's large teenage user base.#youtube #ai #algorithm #youtubealgorithm #artificialintelligence Hosted on Acast.
