    Piano Improvisation - July 21, 2020

Mistakes are normal. Imperfection is beautiful. Happy Accidentals are improvisations by Patrick Hockberger. Notebook: I don't usually improvise in Eb, so I had a harder time finding the chords I was hearing in my head. But it was great practice and lead to some new ideas! Once I got the hang of playing it, I tried moving it into a higher register, then lower.

    Piano Improvisation - July 13, 2020

Mistakes are normal. Imperfection is beautiful. Happy Accidentals are improvisations by Patrick Hockberger. Notebook: Didn’t really have anything to start with, so just noodled. Accidentally jumped to an interesting chord and started repeating it. A legit song begins at 1:28. Reminiscent of a song from The Flash that a student sang at a voice recital. Integrated the melody from July, 10- how much of these improvisations are quoting ideas from previous improvisations? I think a lot. Nothing complicated happens melodically or melodically, but the secret is, the simpler music is, the more it frees up the performer’s attention to play it as beautifully and expressively as possible. This one’s a keeper.

    Piano Improvisation - July 12, 2020

Mistakes are normal. Imperfection is beautiful. Happy Accidentals are improvisations by Patrick Hockberger. Notebook: I heard this music in my head so completely, but it took a few attempts to be able to stumble through it. The initial melody may be from something, I’m not sure. There is a core song in here that is just about finished. I am more interested in revisiting the first half of the improvisation- there’s a core song there that is just about finished- but I was curious where the harmonic wandering would take me, so I went with it. Stops abruptly due to technical difficulties.

    Piano Improvisation - July 10, 2020

Mistakes are normal. Imperfection is beautiful. Happy Accidentals are improvisations by Patrick Hockberger. Notebook: Before going to the keyboard, I was inspired by a melodic idea from Hamilton and began playing with alterations and reharmonizations in my mind. At the keyboard, I started by playing the idea several times to develop muscle memory. Then my fingers wandered elsewhere and discovers some interesting chord combinations. I’ve been experimenting with minor Dominant chords lately. Halfway through, it started sounding like a song from In The Heights, also by Lin Manuel-Mirandez. Accidental key change, so I went with it. The minor section was very interesting and could be a great jumping off point for a future improvisation. Found my way back to the original theme, then back out. Could have ended it a few times, but I loved where my head was at, so I wanted to see if I could discover any more interesting ideas. It went on a little longer, but I cropped off the ending.
