Ep. 8 - Josh Bradford: Escape Artist, Adlet, and Showing Up for the Birmingham Heavy Music Scene

Josh Bradford has been in the Birmingham heavy music scene since before most people knew what to call it. He fronted Escape Artist, helped build Adlet into one of Birmingham's most memorable local acts, and now hosts weeknight events like karaoke, trivia, and bingo at Lee's Coffee inside Workplay. In this episode, Josh talks about what got him into heavy music, what the scene looked like in the Cave 9 era, and what it took to be a real part of it before smartphones and social media made everything easier and harder at the same time. We get into the Escape Artist story from the early days through the hiatus and their 2024 reunion, the Adlet chapter and what it was like to be part of a local supergroup, and what loyalty to a scene actually looks like once the novelty wears off.We also spend real time on what Workplay is doing for local heavy music in Birmingham right now — 23 local bands on their stages since January of this year alone — and why mixed bills keep coming up as the single most important thing this scene could do more of.Honest conversation with someone who has been in the room a long time and still shows up.Follow on Instagram:@bamacore_@jdubbradford @workplaybham@leescoffeeandcocktails

The Breakdown Ep. 6 | Stay Lost: Monster Truck Metal, Band History, and What's Next

Birmingham metalcore band Stay Lost sits down for a full breakdown of everything: where the name came from, how the band actually came together, and why a YouTube comment calling their music "monster truck metal" ended up becoming something they're putting on a shirt.Brett, Patrick, and Chase talk through the evolution from their post-hardcore roots under the name Mend to the darker, new metal-influenced sound they're leaning into now. They get into the writing and recording process with producer Kevin Langley out of Athens, Alabama, how "Step Back" blew up overnight with 50,000 streams, and what made "Cheap Heat" a turning point for the band. The conversation also covers what it's like being the heaviest band on a pop punk bill and the softest band on a deathcore bill sometimes in the same month, their campaign to play Vans Warped Tour, and plans for new music and a regional run with their friends in 10 and Handsome. If you're into metalcore, heavy music, or just honest conversations about what it actually looks like to be a band grinding it out from central Alabama, this one's for you.Find Stay Lost on all streaming platforms and on social media at @staylostrocks.

Birmingham heavy music is built on tight rooms, tight sets, and tight-knit people—and Bridewell is right in the middle of it.
