The Climate Neutral Data Centre Podcast

In this episode Emile Chalouhi, CEO of Opiquad discusses the opportunities for sustainable data centres in municipalities across Europe. He talks about the demand for edge data centres to drive digitalisation in these smaller communities and bring the benefits of the digital economy to citizens and businesses wherever they are located. Climate neutral data centres can act as hubs for digital investment and progress, and so municipalities are keen to attract them to develop skills, careers and opportunities that help sustain their towns. 

Antti Laine joined the board of the CNDCP in June. He brings a wealth of experience from his role with the Finnish Data Center Association. In this podcast we talk about energy efficiency, sustainability, sustainable construction, education and the need to attract a younger and more diverse workforce into the sector. Antti also describes the value that the Pact brings to national associations such as the FDCA by sharing international best practices for climate neutrality.

Giancarlo Giacomello of Aruba discusses how water is used in data centres and its increasing role as power densities increase to meet demand. He explains innovative new water usage systems that consume zero water and looks at the use of grey and black water. Giancarlo also talks about the Pact's work to create an effective measure that takes account of local climate and water scarcity issues. 

As European nations examine how to implement the European Energy Efficiency Directive, Dr Béla Waldhauser explains how reusing waste heat from data centres can help energy efficiency and deliver climate sustainability targets. He talks about the need for collaboration between multiple players to create value for 'green heat' and viable plans for its implementation.

Matt Pullen speaks to Ben Maynard about the genesis of the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact, its goals and successes to date. He looks forward to 2024 and the evolving mission of the Pact and the important role it plays in supporting the twin transition to a digital, sustainable economy in Europe.
