The Cost of Convenience

Food delivery and convenience services have become a normal part of daily life, but what are they really costing us? This project explores how people use delivery apps and how those choices affect their routines, spending, and ideas of value. By looking at different types of households, from busy families to single professionals and retirees, this project shows how convenience means something different for everyone, and why so many people continue to choose it even when it costs more.

The Cost of Convenience: How Delivery Apps Are Changing Everyday Life

What does it actually cost to tap a button and have food show up at your door? In this episode, I sat down with nine people from different walks of life: single professionals, working parents, empty nesters, and more - to find out how delivery apps like DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Instacart are shaping their daily routines, spending habits, and their ideas of what convenience is even worth. The answers were more complicated than I expected. From someone who hasn't set foot in a grocery store since 2020, to a mom who only opens the app in emergencies, to someone raising ethical questions about how these platforms actually operate - everyone had a different story. I also tracked my own usage for a week, and spoiler: it was more than I thought. This is a project about everyday life in average neighborhoods. It probably sounds a lot like your neighborhood too.
