The Curious Educator

I'm Megan, an adult Third Culture kid living on O’ahu. I care about education and am curious if we can improve it. This podcast uses curiosity to explore events that affect public education in Hawai'i. The premise is to explore how history helps us better understand the present when we are curious and bravely sit with uncomfortable topics. The Curious Educator is written and hosted by Megan Powell, edited by Alex Ruiz, with music provided by Keale.

    Ep 4 : Teacher Reflections, a conversation

This episode discusses a survey I sent to public school teachers and administration. Rather than just reading the survey results, I asked my friend Siobhan to sit down and discuss them with me.  I redacted all names, full names, and personal information for her so she could only see the answers. We had a great conversation about education, joy, and the chain of why’s.

Ep 3 : The Origins of Punahou School, with Dr. Joy Schulz

My guest for episode 3 is Dr. Joy Schulz, author of Hawaiian by Birth: missionary children, Bicultural Identity, and U.S. colonialism in the Pacific, published in 2017. As a third-culture kid, I was fascinated by her desire to make TCKs the main character of her historical research. As someone who attended a boarding school, I was even more engaged in the topic of Punahou School and what went on there in the early days of its founding.

Ep 2 : The Ceded Lands of Hawai'i

In this episode, I sit down with Kekailoa Perry. He was my professor at U.H. for an indigenous law and education class. I've asked him to join me for a conversation about crown lands because he has studied law, taught in Hawaiian studies, and has sometimes challenged our laws. We discuss the differences between crown lands and ceded lands, and he explains three major cases relating to Hawai’i’s ceded lands. He is kind and a wealth of knowledge.

    Ep 1 : An Introduction

I'm Megan, an adult Third Culture kid living on O’ahu.  I care about education, and I'm curious if we can improve it.
