Episode 48 - A preview of the Jeff McDonald podcast

Jeff McDonald talking about mindset and why we do what we do...Ah shit, where do you start? This interview with Jeff went for a long time, and we covered a lot of ground. And usually we do a reasonably long 2 to 3-minute intro. I don’t think this podcast needs that. So I am just going to jot down some dot points on the subjects that you will pick up on. Here goes:> We humans dominate this earth because we have a front brain.> There’s a science behind how we act.> Jeff follows Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Click here.> Farmers have a lot of fear because everything is on the line.> We act black or white but need to be more grey.> Jeff explains what a true leader looks like.> We have fixed mindsets around what has served us well.> When you have a need, you will try to control the outcome.> None of us listen enough.> We need to make things not about us.> Find independence.I hope you enjoy. Episode 47 - A preview podcast of the panel hosted by Lachie McKenzie

This podcast is a little different; it’s from a panel we were involved in during the Farmers Day Out at Ballarat in late March. The lineup included:Lachie McKenzie - Founder of McKenzie Ag - Panel Facilitator.Brooke Dawson - CEO of Oakdale Meat Co.Phil McFarlane - CEO of Australian Plant Proteins.Alistair Ham - Founder of Windemere Oilseeds.Dwain Duxson - Founder of The Farmers ClubThe quality of a panel podcast depends on the quality of the questions asked, and Lachie McKenzie didn’t let us down in that department. All the panel members spoke about what drives them in business and the passion they have for their respective operations. Lachie also asked about the problems they face right now, and it was quite interesting the diversity of problems each panel member had. I remember when we did a survey of about 50 of our Farmer subscribers a few years back, asking them what problems they were facing at the time. As with the panel, each Farmer had a unique problem, and no two problems were the same. This is a fantastic interview where you will learn what drives these people and understand what it takes for business success in Ag. Just a word of warning, when it gets to the panel bit, you may have to turn the volume up. I hope you enjoy. Episode 46 - A preview of the Barry Clark podcast

We recorded this podcast with Barry Clark live at a conference, and I had the pleasure of co-hosting this interview with the affable and ultra-professional Kirstin Diprose. This one is a real standout story on so many fronts, and it's chock-full of great business lessons and takeaways. In this podcast, you have to listen intently and perhaps replay some of the points to find the take-home bits.Barry was a panelbeater but turned his hand to Shearing and was on the handpiece for 28 years. Somewhere in there, he became a Shearing Contractor, and at the peak, he had 14 teams running around and 220 people on the books. Barry was big on relationships; he would go out of his way to serve the Farmer in a time when Farmer-Contractor relationships were pretty testy. How he built and maintained those relationships is outlined in the podcast, and it's a real lesson for anyone dealing with customers or staff.Barry also has a passion for Farming and has been described by our mutual mate Jason "Chippa" Gordon as the most successful Farm flipper going around. In his and his wife Jodie's time, they have bought and sold 15 farms so far. Flipping Farms is a deliberate thing, and when buying a Farm, a few things they look for are: it has to have some kind of water asset, the location, and then there's also the renovation aspect, for both the Farm and Farm homestead. They have just exited the famous Perricoota Station just outside Echuca on the Murray River and have now taken over the blue-chip Larundel Estate between Ballarat and Meredith. Barry was involved in an incident in 2025 where he wrestled and disarmed a young man who had terrorist-like intentions on a Jetstar flight he boarded at Avalon en route to Sydney. This is a gripping story that had everyone in the room captivated. Some of the words I would use to describe Barry are curious, aware, engaging, entrepreneurial, and passionate. He is also a standard-setter. What a great interview. We hope you enjoy. End of message. The Farmers Club podcast is now only available to our paid newsletter subscribers. Episode 45 - A preview of the Alice Mabin podcast

Alice Mabin has done a lot in the Ag space, a hell of a lot. It would almost be safe to say more than anyone her age, and she's still only young. She has a creative mind, and she gets the Ag and Farming thing. Alice has a saying she keeps telling herself: "What would I be doing if I only had 6 months to live?" She builds her life around this statement. It stems from having a horse accident at 15, where she was resuscitated 3 times, spent 3 weeks in a coma and 4 months in hospital. In typical Alice style, she said it was the best thing that had happened to her because it changed the course of her life. And what a life it has been. She started her working life in the Ag corporate space, working for Zoetis, selling Animal Health products to Farmers. It was in this role that she saw a gap in the market: that our promotion of Ag and storytelling was really poor and needed improvement. So she started her own business called Agrishots, where she tells the story of Ag through photography, and now something else. That something else has led Alice to her biggest project yet. Film. And this is where she had her big Clarkson's Farm-like moment, but she is doing it in a different way. This is a documentary series about Farming's relationship with the non-Farming society. It's food-related, and I will let her explain the narrative. This could be huge for Ag (take a look at the trailer here), it could change the way we tell our stories, it could be how we get cut through to our city cousins. It's an 8-part series that Alice hopes will be released in the middle of 2026, with series 2 and 3 to follow. End of message. The Farmers Club podcast is now only available to our paid newsletter subscribers. Episode 44 - A preview of Ash Dinning podcast

Ash has been a disciple of the Machinery Industry over the last 3 decades. He is a curious observer and has witnessed the many changes that have come to the industry over the years. In this podcast, we cover the industry dynamics of what happens when there are fewer new buyers in the market and do a bit of scenario-playing about what might happen to the used market going forward. We talk about whether the Chinese are on the way with their offering, and we hear that the successful Liujong brand appears to be entering the market with a medium-to-high-horsepower Tractor offer. We covered off on how the corporates now dominate the Dealership space and the positves an negatives of that. Ash says that the modern-day Machinery salesperson needs to emulate what the Livestock Agents do and bring that approach to the market. That was a very interesting take and one that other industry people might want to hear about. We nominated 3 Machinery industry legends and asked Ash to comment on their strengths and what has made them successful over the long term. Those 3 were John Richards, the Founder of Goldacres; Dennis O'Connor, former owner of O'Connor's Case IH; and John Nicoletti, who had several John Deere Dealerships in WA. If you are looking for a bit of guidance on where the Machinery industry is heading, make sure you tune into this one. Episode 43 - A preview of the Ben McEvoy podcast

Ben McEvoy was an outstanding AFL footballer who played 252 games over a 15-year career, including two premierships with the Hawthorn Football Club. He was drafted by St Kilda and has a funny story about the draft, and when he was traded from St Kilda to Hawthorn, he didn’t know it was going to happen until it did. Ben was passionate about Football but has what I’d consider a greater passion for Farming. He says he’ll be a lifelong Farmer and just loves it. The money-earning side of Football allowed him to enter into the Farming game; without that, he said, buying Land would have been a lot more difficult. Ben talks about how he fumbled away at things for the first part of his Football career before the penny dropped about 8 or 9 years in. Being a first generation Farmer meant he had to learn a lot, and this is where his brother-in-law, Paul Vance, came into the picture. Paul became his mentor of sorts and had the Farm next door. He looked after things whilst Ben was doing his Football thing in Melbourne. He started buying Land about 5 years into his footy career and said juggling both was difficult, and he tried to get to the Farm as often as he could. He said some of the things he learnt in footy he has implemented into his way of Farming. You’ll get from the interview that he is a humble bloke and very grateful for the opportunities he got in Football. He made the footy thing work, and he’s hell-bent on making the Farming thing work as well. Another takeaway that you will notice is that he’s a ripper bloke too. It was an enjoyable interview we did on a hill on his property, in the Ute, of all places. To get the full version subscribe to The Farmers Club. Episode 42 - A preview of the Jeff McDonald podcast

We have Jeff back by popular demand. Our recommendation is that you listen to the first podcast we did, episode 25, for context, if you haven't already. Some of the points we covered in this episode were around bank staff and how there's a lack of Agricultural knowledge within the bank, probably like never before. Jeff talked about the concerns around the viability of marginal Cropping areas. We gave Equity some airtime and asked whether it's even useful as a business and borrowing tool anymore. We covered lease rates for Land and what they are telling us about the value of Land. We related a plumbing business to a Farming business and ascertained that they are closer related than ever in terms of their business models. We spent a bit of time talking about the importance of cash flow and how it fits with budgeting and borrowing. Jeff explained what his role is and why he calls it the "Sit with' role". He outlined his top 3 points when it comes to succession. We discussed the price of new Machinery and how his customers have changed their approach. And at the end, Jeff outlined "The Toyota policy", which I've highlighted as a bit of gold. If you're in the business of Farming, this is a must-listen. There are so many points I have jotted down. We are going to get Jeff back for 3 more podcasts, one on mindset, another on managing Farm costs and one on Water. Subscribe to The Farmers Club to hear the full version. Episode 41 - A preview of the St John Craner podcast

St John (pronounced Sinjin) is an interesting cat, and we got him on because we wanted to hear his story and what he does, but we also wanted to get into the minds of you guys (the Farmers) and better understand the decisions you make and why. So, by listening, you might get a better understanding of yourself and why you do what you do. You see St John has a business called Rural Sales Success that specifically trains salespeople how to serve their Farmer customers properly, not sell to them, but serve them. And as you will find out in the podcast, there is a difference. St John is a lifelong learner in the field of human psychology. He understands what makes us tick and why we make all these buying decisions. In a season, a Farmer has to buy a lot of things, and some Farmers buy millions of dollars' worth of inputs, products, and services just to keep the production wheels turning each season. St John knows that and gets his student to understand that they need to be front and centre when those buying decisions are being made. We covered a lot of topic but it's the looking in the mirror of understanding you guys, the Farmers that I found fascinating. It's a very bloody interesting listen, and as I said, you might learn something about yourself. We hope you enjoy. Episode 40 - A preview of the Kent Wooding podcast

Kent Wooding has paved a well-built path in the Agronomy game, mainly in the Mallee area of Victoria. He started out in the space at 20 back in 1990, and he revealed to us that he actually wanted to work in the Livestock industry, most probably as an agent. Back then, the Mallee was a mixed Farming region, but over the years Sheep have disappeared, so Kent probably made the right career choice. When asked what traits the best Agros possess, he said they are strong at the basics, have a keen interest in the science side of things, and he also mentioned that they have an artistic flair. I have never heard agronomy described as art before, but when you think about it, the good ones would have plenty of creativity. Kent worked for 5 or 6 organisations in his working career before he made the bold move to start his own business, and then he left the Mallee, the place where he is very well known and where he built a strong reputation. He now runs a business called Ag Insights Consulting, where he works with independent Agronomists and teams of Agronomists, and as he described it, keeping them in the paddock while he handles all the backend stuff. It was another great conversation with someone who knows his industry well, has served it well, and it has given him so much in return. Last but not least, he's just a good bloke, having known him more in our younger days. You should enjoy this one. End of message. The Farmers Club podcast is now only available to our paid newsletter subscribers. Episode 39 - A preview of the Kate Burke podcast

Kate Burke has spent a lifetime in the Ag space and has worked alongside Farmers throughout her career. I've said it before: Kate gets Farmers and knows what makes them tick. You can only do this by closely observing the human side of Farming. Kate is a deep thinker, and when working in a consultancy role with Farmers, she has the ability to adapt to each situation, which can differ from one Farmer to another.Kate has just finished her 2nd book called "Succession", which will be a must-read for anyone who is in a family Farming situation. I asked what does succession means to Kate, and she said she sees it in 2 ways: 1) it's a transfer of responsibility, and 2) it's a transfer of assets. This is a simplified version, and there are many more complexities that lead to these two main pillars.Kate loves the education and training side of Agriculture and also enjoys helping Farmers solve their problems. She gets a kick out of seeing the penny drop with Farmers when they get it. We strongly believe that succession is the biggest issue in Ag, and the more people we have with the credentials that Kate has, the better off the Farming industry will be.Head to Kate's website here to purchase, and if you haven't bought her first book, "Crops, People, Money and You", there are bundling options where you can purchase both.I enjoyed this chat because Kate outlined so many important succession-related things that I never ever thought of. We went deep on the subject of succession.I hope you enjoy. End of message. The Farmers Club podcast is now only available to our paid newsletter subscribers. Episode 37 - A preview of the Simon Quilty podcast

Simon Quilty is, hands down, Australia's leading Red Meat and Livestock analyst. What separates Simon from others is his ability to take complex scenarios and relay them in simple terms. He has developed a delivery style that Farmers can understand, and when it's understood, Farmers can then make the necessary decisions they need to make within their own businesses.Simon's parents were both doctors, and he was brought up in Shepparton in Northern Vic. So he never started with the Ag background. But he soon developed a love for the Red Meat and Livestock industry in his first job with the VFF (Victorian Farmers Federation). He then worked for Louis Dreyfus, where he learned the craft of trading. That education put him on the path to becoming the best in his field. He met his business partner, American Brett Stuart, and they got on so well that they decided to join forces and start Global Agritrends back in 2019. Today, they have over 2000 subscribers from a wide range of industries, all of whom want to know the goings on in the Red Meat industry This interview is a good mix of getting to understand Simon, the things he has done in his career, and how he turns the information he gathers into predictions and outcomes we can all rely on. We also ask some questions around the markets that every Farmer needs to hear. This is a fascinating interview of the highest order. Episode 37 - A preview of the Bill Long podcast (Part 2)

The 2nd part of the Bill Long interview is about his critique of the GRDC and Grains industry RD&E in general. Critique might sound like a bit of a negative word, but it's not; it's great to hear from people like Bill who tell it like it is and with an informed opinion. He outlines what he thinks needs to change, but also praises the many things that are going right. Bill sent us an email with his reply to the "Boots Off Log On" podcast we alerted him to, which featured Paul McKenzie, a respected fellow consultant and Farmer in WA. Paul outlined how he thought changes could be made to the Grains industry RD&E and the GRDC, and how this would benefit Farmers. We were lucky to have Bill, who has been extensively involved with the GRDC, share his thoughts on what Paul said in the podcast. The main concern is around the billion-dollar war chest currently being held by the GRDC, and also, Bill points out that a lot of the great research being done is not making it to the Farm level. If you are in the Cropping game or want to hear an opinion of one of the best brains in the business, then make sure you listen in. You can work out if your money has or is being well spent. It's also a pointer to what might be happening within other RD&E outfits in other Agricultural industries. I hope you enjoy. Episode 36 - A preview of the Bill Long podcast (Part 1)

Bill Long has had a most interesting career in Agriculture. His wife, Jeanette, sent me Bill's list of achievements, and I could not believe how long it was.Bill started as an Agronomist after growing up on a Farm in the Mid North of SA. His inquisitive mind meant that he chose agronomy over being a Farmer, which he stepped back into later in life. When he started in Agronomy, it marked the beginning of the evolution of precision Farming, and Farmers needed help converting from the old, conventional way of Cropping. Bill really enjoyed that transition period. After a dozen or so years as an Agronomist, his clients kept asking him that they wanted more. So Bill and Jeanette started Ag Consulting Co. to give their clients a wider range of services they yearned for.Bill and Jeanatte returned to Farming after buying a place near Ardrossan on the Yorke Peninsula (YP). He soon found that expansion in the YP was going to be difficult, and through his client work in the Eyre Peninsula (EP), he saw the underutilization of the country there. They cashed their chips and reinvested in a couple of Farms on the EP at less than half the price. Their son Will is now involved, and between them, they now Crop over 3000 hectares. We broke this story up into a two-part podcast, with part 1 focusing on Bill's career and his achievements. In part 2, we cover Cropping RD & E and the role of the GRDC in that. Something Bill is pretty passionate about. I really enjoyed my chat with Bill, who knows his stuff, and I'm positive you will take so much away from the many subjects we covered. I hope you enjoy. Episode 35 - A preview of the Jonathan Lillie podcast

Jonathan Lillie and his brother Jamie are in charge of the Lillie family generation business called Fox and Lillie. Fox and Lillie started in 1948 in the Wool industry, a good year to start a wool-based business in the lead-up period to what was known as the 1950s Wool boom.Fox and Lillie is a great Australian Agricultural success story as they have stood the test of time and have constantly pivoted their business with good management decisions that have allowed it to diversify. Fox and Lillie is 100 per cent owned by the Lillie Family and now boasts a 250 million dollar Wool, Livestock and Property turnover business which runs alongside a $150 million turnover Aquaculture business. Yes, you heard it right, Aquaculture. They went into the industry blind, but quickly learnt how it all works. And it might be a case of them coming into an industry with no preconceived notions, only to see things that others might not have seen. It's one of those entrepreneurial Agribusiness stories that needs to be told and celebrated. And after a lifetime in Wool, Jonathan is still talking the industry up.Subscribe to The Farmers Club to hear the full version. Episode 34 - A preview of the Tim Burvill podcast

We interviewed Tim Burvill from the South Australian Cattle Company (SACC). The SACC is a very interesting business that has a few moving parts to it. It has a couple of properties in the South East of South Australia where they run Cattle and a Feedlot, they have a wholesale dry-aged Beef company and a brand called Kings and Queens, which sells to select supermarkets. They had a couple of restaurants in Adelaide and Melbourne, but exited those when they dissolved a partnership. Tim recently got back from the US, and he used his time over there to observe how the industry is going and what that might mean for any future trends. He said he couldn’t have come back more positive as to where the direction of the Beef industry is headed here in Australia. We spoke about the business of Beef, and he has a handle on what levers he might pull within his own business going forward. He is big on growth through partnerships and outlines some of the partnerships he already has in motion and what future partnerships might look like. It was one of those interviews that turned into a conversation with Tim asking some questions along the way. Tim is one switched-on cookie and will no doubt grow his business into one of the most celebrated Cattle businesses in the nation (no pressure, Tim). The Farmers Club podcast is now only available to our paid newsletter subscribers. Episode 32 - A preview of the Pat Mangan podcast

Pat Mangan created the Farming tour industry in Australia through his business, Swagman Tours, which he started in 1987 and sold in 2020. He now runs the Farm, a Beef Cattle operation, this time around with his son and loves every minute of it.Pat is a talented man and, at some point, started making Stockcrates and sold over 100 under the Swagaman brand before calling it quits when he sold the main Swagman tours business.South Africa was the most interesting place he went to. Episode 22 - Ken Williamson the Aussie who invented the Silage Wrapping process

It's amazing how many clever people we have in Ag here in Australia. And when it comes to contributions to world Agriculture as far as Australians are concerned, Ken Williamson is probably at the top of the tree. You see Ken invented the Silage wrapping process from here in Australia, which has become a massive worldwide industry. There are two parts that Ken had to invent. It's the Silage wrap and the Silage wrapping Machine. Although he didn't invent the wrap itself, he got the idea from wrapping pallets, but he was the first to use the exact same process for wrapping Silage. Ken knew that it was going to be a big job to stretch it by hand, so he invented the Silage wrapping Machine, which was an equally important cog in the wheel. Initially rejected by the Government and some of the biggest Machinery Manufacturers in the world, Ken found an able suitor in Kverneland, which, on the back of the Bale Wrapper, has become a worldwide force in a wide range of Machinery and Equipment items. At one point, they sold over 10,000 Wrappers in one year, and Ken and his company held the licence and received a royalty for each Machine sold. This is a classic case of us not celebrating our Ag Entrepreneurs enough, but in this case, who were we to know? Only a certain few would know about what Ken did, and that's an injustice. Who would have ever thought a humble but clever Australian invented the Silage Wrapping process,  some 40 years ago? Today, if you lined up each bale wrapped in 2024 side by side, it would make a line that would travel 22 times around the world. It's a massive industry, especially in Europe, and as we said near the end of the interview, Ken is more famous in Europe for what he did than he is in Australia. Here is his story. I hope you enjoy. Episode 21 - Claudia Bryant who is championing Farm financial literacy

Claudia Bryant teaches financial literacy to Farmers. But it wasn't something she was trained for, it was a learnt trait. Claudia turned this need into a business and has delivered courses on the subject. Claudia is young and calculated, and she really gets this space. She also said this: "Farmers are willing to pay for her courses, knowing they need to improve their financial literacy, but it's actually getting them to stick at it that is where the problem lies. Farmers just return to their old habits". So with her business Farm Life Plan, she is about to pivot and use those learnings to rejig and come at this problem from a different angle. Farm financial literacy is a big issue in Agriculture. We write about it a lot in The Farmers Club newsletter. And we need people like Claudia to succeed in her chosen quest to educate the masses. I really enjoyed this chat with a young agriculturalist who is making a difference to people's lives. I hope you enjoy it too. Episode 20 - The Megafert Scandal

Donald Carter has spent 15 years of his life pursuing justice. What was originally a major deception or maybe even corruption by the Megafert/Interfert companies, resulted in $139 million going missing, never to be recovered. They soon realised that pursuing Megafart was futile, so they turned their attention to the National Australia Bank. The NAB potentially deceived the 22 Fertiliser retailers, who collectively lost 13 million in this scandal. Some businesses went bankrupt, and some people never recovered. The NAB admitted guilt by paying 17.5 cents in the dollar to these 22 Fertiliser retailers but refused to pay the balance. The bank just kept on sweeping it under the carpet and still is.Donald, at the ripe old age of 85, is still actively seeking to regain the losses he and his contemporaries suffered. This is one great example of David vs Goliath, with Goliath treating David with contempt. It's a very fascinating story that's never really ended. Episode 19 - Donald Carter an innovator in the Grain and Fertiliser industries

This podcast on Donald Carter is another untold story of an Ag entrepreneur who saw opportunities, took risks, did deals, had to find money when he didn't have any, and innovate his way through the ups and downs of his business life. Along the way, Donald was involved in a very innovative trucking co-op, which had a unique business model that worked well until it didn't. He was heavily involved in the Grain Storage side of things, but it was his connection with the Fertiliser industry that he is most famous for. We actually did two podcasts, the first one about his life in business, mainly through his Laharum Bulk Handling company. But the 2nd one is how he finished his business life, being involved in one of the biggest Agriculture scandals we have seen in this country. We'll call it the "Megafert scandal", which we will release soon after this one. Donald is now 85, and his memory is as sharp as a tack. I admire people who can departmentalise all the important happenings of their life and talk about them like it was yesterday. I hope you enjoy. Episode 18 - Nigel Kerin on the business of Farming

Our latest podcast is with Nigel Kerin. We did an interactive question-and-answer type webinar in early July 2025 with our Farmers Club subscribers, and Nigel mentioned one thing that sums up that webinar and this podcast. He said, "When the students are ready to learn, the teacher will appear".So in this podcast, we are the students and Nigel is the teacher. So listen hard and listen often, as there are many gold bars dropping right through this 1-hour 50-minute publication.I thought about slicing and dicing the content to make it shorter, and then I thought again, we are not slicers and dicers. This sort of stuff is best presented in its raw form. As I said before, listen hard and listen often, and jot down notes because you are in for an education of the highest order. It's got a Livestock tone to it, but I'd highly recommend that anyone in Ag and business in general take a listen.Be the student, and listen to the teacher.I hope you enjoy. Episode 17 - Paul Ryan and his family's inventions in the Farm Machinery space

Paul Ryan had a very interesting upbringing. You see, his dad, Austin, was one of the greatest Farm Machinery inventors and innovators we have seen in this country. So much so that Austin got an OAM for his services to the Broadacre Cropping industry. The business was Ryan Farm Machinery, or RFM for short, which many of you will know. Paul explains what it was like growing up with an old man who thought outside the box. Someone whose mind was often elsewhere in inventor mode. Paul said he was often up at 3 am, and they would find him down in the workshop designing. He did some brilliant, ahead-of-its-times stuff, which Paul relays in this interview.Paul himself has continued the family tradition and is an inventor through his own business, Ryan NT (short for No-Till).Ryan NT is a growing business that sells retrofitted Tynes, Discs, Guage and Press Wheels into the Australian Broadacre Cropping market. They are just starting to sell some decent volumes into other Cropping countries. This is a fascinating story of a family who has achieved so much. I hope you enjoy. Episode 16 - Jim Hoffmann a Hay industry innovator and pioneer

I'm very excited about this podcast with Hay industry stalwart Jim Hoffmann. It's business wisdom on steroids. There are so many takeaways for those involved in Ag or business in general.Jim, through the business he started, Green & Gold Contracting, was one of the pioneers and innovators of the domestic Hay industry as we know it today. There have been so many changes in the Hay game over the years, and we go through and unpack some of those advancements one by one.Jim designed the Green & Gold business model around Contract Baling for a Farmer, buying the Hay off that Farmer, freighting it, and selling it to a customer. This model has served him very well over the years. He heeded the words of an old mentor right at the start. The mentor said this: "The only way to make money out of Trucks is you need to own what's on the back of the Truck". The rest is history. This one is a ripper. The Homestead on Mount William Station, Willaura (Vic), is like the many magnificent old-world Homesteads dotted around the Western District of Victoria. Many have become burdens to their owners because of the expense of upkeep; they are pretty much money pits. Will Abbott and his three siblings had a unique succession outcome, which saw Will end up with the Homestead. So, what do you do when you own a prominent slice of Pastoral history? You turn it into a Hotel. And what a magnificent Hotel it is. A banker by trade, Will outlined how his left field venture came to fruition and what his future plans are. Episode 13 - Warren Davies chats to our Farm Tender staff about mental health

Warren Davies, The Unbreakable Farmer, does a lot of podcasts and talks to groups and individuals on the subject of mental health.Warren spoke to our Farm Tender staff recently, as our team are collectively speaking to hundreds of Farmers every day. Sometimes, those conversations can be tricky; by that, I mean some people are doing it tough, and we provide an ear for them to talk to. This can affect our staff, so getting Warren in for a chat was a great initiative by our MD Megan Ruyg, whose voice you will hear in the podcast. This is not an interview-style podcast; in this one, you will hear Warrens's own powerful story. Episode 12 - Jim Riordan - From 30 tonnes to 3 million tonnes of Grain

Jim Riordan is a quintassential Ag entrepreneur. I'm so excited to bring you this edition, there are so many takeaways and lessons for anyone in Ag or in business.Jim comes from a successful business background. He did a wide range of things before he bought a Truck and Trailer and started carting Grain. That's where Roirdans got going. The business, interestingly, has a similar model today as it did back then. Buy Grain from a seller, sell to a buyer and cart it from A to B.So, from his first single load of 30 tonnes to now handling over 3 million tonnes of Grain, it's a story well worth unpicking.I hope you enjoy. Episode 10 - John Carter and the power of a positive attitude

I've know John Carter of Wallaloo Park Merino stud fame pretty much all of my life. And I would have to say that it would be hard to find a more positive person in Agriculture. John's other great skill is asking questions, a quality you don't see too often. His curious mind means his life is a very interesting one. When you strike up a conversation with him, his attitude is infectious. There are so many valuable takeaways in this conversation:- Like how to treat customers- What to do when things go wrong- Finding what you are passionate about- Using mentors to learn from- Evolving on the run- Not getting too stressed about thingsThe Wallaloo Park Merino stud success has been constant for decades. They have consistently been up with the best Ram sale averages from right across Australia for a long time now. A feat that is a testament to their capabilities.I really enjoyed this interview with John. Make sure you jot down the learnings.I hope you enjoy it. End of message. Episode 9 - Hayley Grosser on building a new relationship with money

I heard recently where someone said that as Farmers, we are really good at the hands-on stuff but not so good at the business or money thing. We know that if it was a choice of the office or the paddock, most would choose the paddock hands down.Hayley Grosser is a Farmer who knows her numbers, and the reason she does is because she changed her mindset about money. Money is something most Farmers never talk about openly, even within the family unit.An attitudinal change around the subject of money helped transform Hayley and her husband Marty's Farm from a business running 400 hectares to one now operating 2200 hectares. Hayley's belief in their Farm business model has given her the confidence to coach other Farmers around the subject of money. This episode was recorded back in March 2024 at our Farm Tender event. The content Hayley is about to present is timeless. There are so many takeaways. It was a very enjoyable conversation with a clear and articulate presenter.Enjoy. End of message. Episode 8 - Andy Worland and his interesting journey in Ag

Most people in Ag have a story. Some have several. Andy Worland is one of those guys with many.Andy started his career in the Wool industry, which took him to all corners of the great country. The Wool and Shearing industry taught him so much, something he said his kids will unfortunately miss out on.He then embarked on a career in Rural advertising sales, a tough gig at the best of times. This led him into his very own rural marketing and media business, which he has made a great success of. We unpack a lot of stories around the above-mentioned moves through the different areas of Ag. But it's the story at the end that has the most impact; make sure you tune in. I hope you enjoy our interview with Andy Worland. Episode 7 - Wayne Hawkins and his love of Farming

Wayne Hawkins is a Farmer at Frances on the SA/Vic border. The Hawkins family collectively run a lot of country in that area.I know Wayne pretty well, and I'd have to say he is one of the most passionate Farmers I have ever met. He loves it, and at the age of 71, he still loves it. In fact, he's one of those blokes that loves life.I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did and I'm sure there are wisdoms to take away. Our sponsors are The Farmers Club, which is a free and subscription-based email newsletter chock for Farming and Ag news, info and stories. Episode 6 - Sam Van Assche a young Farmer going places

This is a recording of an interview I did with Farmer Sam Van Assche in March 2024 at our Farm Tender Entrepreneurs in Farming event. Apart from a couple of references to prices and seasons, all the information in this podcast is current. To become a 1st generation Farmer these days is difficult. But the good ones find a way. Sam is one of those who did.He used dogged determination, persistence and street smarts, to buy his first Farm. He annoyed every Rural Property Agent in his targeted area, and armed with his trusty spreadsheets he managed to convince himself, his wife and then the bank that they were fit to own their very own Farm. It’s a fascinating story of a young couple (Sam is his wife’s name, too) that have come a long way and, in their eyes, have so much more to achieve. These two are going places. Our sponsors are The Farmers Club, which is a free and subscription-based email newsletter chock for Farming and Ag news, info and stories. In Agriculture, we don't celebrate our entrepreneurs enough. These people take big risks and pave the way for others.John Richards, the founder of Spraying company Goldacres is right up there with the other great entrepreneurs in Ag. He founded the company in his 40s and built it up to the point where they now employ around 200 people. Goldacres is proudly Australian-owned and all its manufacturing is done here, which is a great feat in this day and age where nearly all our larger Machinery items are imported. Episode 4 - The Harry Bourchier Files (Part 3)

The Harry Bourchier Files (Part 3) - Harry and Gwen Bourchier were Farmers of note, with Harry buying his first Farm in the 1930s. They bought and sold many Farms throughout their Farming career, and when it came time to give the Farming game away, they went about setting up their 9 children. A great lesson in succession at scale. It's a fascinating story, and the three attributes that come to mind when I think about Harry's Farming career were: He was bold, he took big risks, and he was confident he could deliver.
