From a young age, Andy was immersed in the world of the military, inspired by his father's service and deeply rooted admiration for the profession. Episode 5: Mental Health Leadership: Supporting Mental Health Among First Responders' Leaders With Heather Edward
In this podcast episode with Heather Edward, several key points regarding mental health support for leaders and leadership development were discussed: - Gap in Mental Health Training: There's a noticeable lack of information and support for leaders in mental health. While there are resources on supporting others, there's a gap in how leaders can support themselves. The existing courses are not comprehensive, leading to frustration among leaders. - Variety of Support: Leaders often know what needs to be done but struggle to access support. It's recognized that different individuals require different approaches to mental health support. Therefore, having multiple courses and programs available is beneficial, rather than relying on a single solution. - Celebrating Successes: Despite facing challenges and traumas, it's essential to celebrate successes and acknowledge resilience among first responders. Heather emphasizes the importance of not making assumptions about people's mental states and instead encourages asking them directly. - Leadership Development: Formal leadership training is crucial for leaders, especially considering issues like moral injury and distress. Leaders need to prioritize their well-being and model healthy behaviors for their staff members. - Influence vs. Authority: Leadership is about influence and relationships, not just authority. Leaders should inspire and lead by example, rather than relying solely on their position of power. - Generational Differences: Different generations have different communication styles and work ethics. It's important to address these generational gaps when developing leaders, considering factors like preferred communication methods and job expectations. - Leadership vs. Management: Leadership involves inspiring and influencing others, whereas management focuses on control and organization. Effective leaders need to be adaptable and prioritize relationships over strict control. - Validation and Safety: Regardless of generation, everyone wants to feel validated and safe in their work environment. Leadership is about building relationships and creating a supportive atmosphere. - Comfort with Uncertainty: Good leaders are comfortable admitting when they don't know something and prioritize supporting their team members. Overall, the episode highlights the importance of comprehensive mental health support for leaders, effective leadership development programs, and the need for leaders to prioritize their well-being and relationships with their teams.

Episode 4: From Spartans to American Minutemen: The Stoic Military Tradition with Dr. Franklin Annis
Apply the code "BOSPOD" on any BOS On Demand courses to receive 15% OFF. Visit our website to purchase. In the latest episode of the Mental Health Mixtape, we delve deep into the annals of history with our guest, Dr. Franklin Annis. A military philosopher, historian, and educational theorist, Dr. Annis takes us on an insightful journey through the evolution of stoicism, from its ancient roots to its relevance in the modern world. Dr. Annis opens the conversation by defining philosophy as a system that simplifies the complexities of the world, offering us a framework to understand life's intricacies. He emphasizes the need for every soldier to adopt a personal philosophy, fostering self-reliance and functionality without seeking external validation. The historical context provided by Dr. Annis is both fascinating and enlightening. He draws parallels between the ancient practice of meeting at the Gymnasium for physical exercise and philosophical discussions and the importance of a mind-body-soul connection, especially for those in leadership roles, such as first responders. As veteran and military leader, Dr. Annis offers a unique perspective on discipline. Instead of solely focusing on the faults of those being disciplined, he encourages leaders to introspect and acknowledge their own mistakes. By being compassionate towards oneself, based on personal experience, leaders can extend that empathy to others. One of the myths Dr. Annis dispels is the misconception that Stoicism means suppressing emotions. He argues that even Generals, with their immense responsibilities, experience moments of vulnerability. Stoicism, according to Dr. Annis, is not about avoiding emotion but managing it effectively. It's about acknowledging emotions, including the act of crying, as a human response to challenges. In a powerful quote, Dr. Annis advises listeners to "be more forgiving with the people you interact with than yourself because you have control of yourself and no control of anyone else." This sage advice reinforces the importance of self-compassion and understanding in leadership. Towards the end of the episode, Dr. Annis shares his ongoing practice and urges listeners to engage in uncomfortable experiences to build confidence. He argues that constant exposure to voluntary hardship can help individuals find inner calm in the face of life's challenges. In this episode, Dr. Franklin Annis leaves us with a profound understanding of Stoicism as a tool for resilience and personal growth. As we navigate the complexities of life, his insights provide a compass for building a robust mental framework and embracing discomfort as a path to self-discovery. Tune in and embark on a journey through time and wisdom with Dr. Annis on the Mental Health Mixtape. Episode 1: Meet our Mixers: A Tale of how Dr. Megan McElheran and Ryan Collyer Come to Host the Mixtape
In this episode, Dr. Megan McElheran, our BOS CEO, Founder and Psychologist + Ryan Collyer, our BOS Lead who was a retired paramedic, engage in a heartfelt dialogue, delving into their paths leading to their roles in mental health support. Dr. Megan McElheran shares her journey of growing up with parents who are psychologists, and yet she was avoiding this work for a long time. Until one day, she surrendered to the calling and started to dive into her work in mental health. Throughout her journey, she recounts several pivotal moments where surrendering became a necessary and challenging lesson. These experiences became instrumental in shaping her current beliefs and approach towards her work. Ryan Collyer embarked on his mental health journey under the guidance of a mentor who offered him tremendous support. Rooted in mindfulness practices tailored for first responders, Ryan perseveres in his path through a dedicated meditation routine, focusing on cultivating compassion, kindness, and self-awareness. In this conversation, they exchange perspectives on nurturing compassion towards first responders who are grappling with mental health challenges. Rather than scrutinizing individuals for perceived shortcomings, they advocate for a shift in focus, urging a view that seeks to understand the experiences that shaped them. Their conversation emphasizes embracing empathy, kindness, and compassion as guiding principles, aiming to reshape how mental health within first responders is approached. ________________ Connect with us: - BOS Website: www.beforeoperationalstress.com - BOS Podcast Page: www.beforeoperationalstress.com/podcast - BOS Podcast on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1rC1XCZBRdPnIA3cOsyzfH - APPLY TO BE A PODCAST GUEST: https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=PjtvTJVveUOiKrmEkV8N0yHesdqOeyBDhv05KNuGdjhUM1NRTkM2TzAxM0YyV0FIVTBQNDM1WVJURi4u - BOS Newsletter: https://www.beforeoperationalstress.com/podcast-newsletter - BOS Instagram: @beforeoperationalstress - BOS LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/before-operational-stress - BOS Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/beforeoperationalstress
