Episode 19. Dealing With Envy In Your Music Career

In the latest episode of 'The Musician's Journey,' hosts Chelsea Szabo and Jed Elliott tackle an issue that resonates deeply with creatives from all walks of life: envy. It's the silent struggle that often goes unspoken, the pang of jealousy when a peer has a viral moment on TikTok, or the internal conflict when a friend's project garners the spotlight that you've been tirelessly working toward. The episode doesn't just dwell on the problem but pivots to solutions and strategies. Jed & Chelsea discuss how to reframe these feelings as indicators of passion and desire, transforming them into motivational tools rather than obstacles. Listeners are invited to look inward and ask themselves what it is they truly long for and how they can align their efforts to achieve it. The discussion also delves into the unpredictable nature of success in the music industry. Unlike traditional career paths, musical success doesn't always correlate with time invested or skills honed. This unpredictability can amplify feelings of envy, but Jed and Chelsea guide listeners through this with real-world examples, including the meteoric rise of bands like Greta Van Fleet and Maneskin. This podcast episode is a must-listen for anyone who has felt the sting of artistic envy. It's a reminder that these feelings are a part of the human experience, and with the right mindset and tools, they can be catalysts for growth and fulfillment. Episode 11. Dr. Marc Fagelson PhD: Making Sense of Tinnitus

For musicians and music lovers, tinnitus can be a particularly challenging companion. It's not just a sound—it's a symbol of passion, a reminder of concerts past, and sometimes, a warning sign of hearing health. But Dr. Fagelson offers hope and practical advice. He shares his personal experiences, both on stage and in the clinic, providing a unique perspective on how to coexist with tinnitus. Marc Fagelson, PhD, is Professor of Audiology in the Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Department at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN. He graduated with a Master’s in Audiology from Columbia University in New York City, and a PhD from the University of TX – Austin. He supervises students in audiology clinics, specialty tinnitus clinics, and teaches classes in audiologic assessment, pathologies, medical audiology, and tinnitus management. He initiated activity in the James H. Quillen Veterans’ Affairs Medical Center in 2001; currently more than 1200 patients are enrolled in that facility's tinnitus clinic. During the first few years supporting veterans' tinnitus management, Fagelson observed that the patients who rated their tinnitus as most severe often presented with co-occurring mental health injury, in particular posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). At that time, the links between tinnitus and PTSD, and the strength of their mutually-reinforcing mechanisms became the focus of his clinically-directed scholarship. He has published and contributed to more than 50 articles. co-edited three texts, and provided more than 100 presentations at national and international meetings. Fagelson wrote and published an animated video on the topic of tinnitus, its effects, and management options through the TED-ed educational platform. The video has been viewed more than 7 million times since its publication in August, 2020. Prior to, and during his time in the graduate program at Columbia University, Fagelson played in a number of NYC-based bands throughout the 1980s, recording a handful of vinyl 45s, and performing routinely at CBGB, Max’s Kansas City, and other dearly departed venues. Episode 9. Defining "Celebration" In Your Music Career - Celebrating Both Internally And Externally

Celebration. It's a word that often conjures images of clinking glasses, confetti, and grand gestures. But what does celebration truly mean in the life of a musician? In the latest episode of 'The Musician's Journey', Jed Elliott, a globally touring musician, and Chelsea Szabo, an executive career coach, take us on an unplanned exploration of this very theme. As the episode unfolds, Jed shares his perspective on concerts as celebrations, where the energy of the crowd and the performance intertwine to create a shared, joyous experience. He speaks candidly about the duality of celebration – the outward, public displays and the inward, private acknowledgments of personal achievements. Chelsea, with her rich background and personal journey through cancer, offers a profound insight into the nuanced ways we can incorporate celebration into our daily lives. She speaks to the importance of recognizing the small victories, the quiet moments of gratitude that often go unnoticed. It's about accessing joy, she says, and allowing ourselves to feel deserving of celebration in all its forms. Together, they discuss the importance of balancing the external and internal aspects of celebration, particularly in the high-octane world of music. They touch upon the need for artists to ground themselves after the adrenaline rush of performance, suggesting that celebration is not only about exuberance but also about calming and centering oneself. Episode 8. Kelsy Karter - Embracing Your Uniqueness: Be Totally Vulnerable and Completely Invincible

In this episode we chat with Kelsy Karter, lead singer of Kelsy Karter & The Heroines. Kelsy discusses the complexities of being a female artist and the strength she draws from her experience with mental health and creative living. Her advice to young artists and reflections on self-compassion are moving, inspiring and life-affirming. Frontwoman Kelsy Karter is an unapologetic singer/songwriter who invites the audience into a beautifully strange world of her own making, a fantasia that’s equal parts rock-and-roll grit and wildly theatrical grandeur. Rolling Stone Magazine called Kelsy a beacon for female rockstars. The band has spent the past few years touring the world as headliners, support and festivals, most recently in 2023 supporting Billy Idol across the US and Palaye Royale in EU. They are currently working on their second album which has been described by the band as an electric and emotional adventure. Their guitar-drenched sound steeps in elements of glam rock, punk and Britpop giving way to a sonic aesthetic both undeniably timeless and entirely of-the-moment.
