🥶COLD AND SNOWY | NJ's January 2026 Monthly Weather Roundup
The Monthly Weather Roundup focused on January's weather patterns, particularly the significant snowstorm and persistent cold. Dave Robinson, New Jersey State Climatologist, discussed the January 25th storm, which brought snow, sleet, and freezing rain across the state, with snowfall totals ranging from 8 to 12 inches in Monmouth County. He noted that while the storm was impactful, it could have been more severe if not for the cold air that limited snow accumulation. The cold weather dominated the latter part of January, with Dave explaining that while it was cold enough for ice skating and cross-country skiing, it wasn't record-breaking. He emphasized that despite the recent cold spell, New Jersey has been warming over time, with the coldest days becoming less extreme. The discussion also covered the state's ongoing drought conditions, with January precipitation being below normal, and the impact of snow and ice on water availability. Topsy-turvy temps in NJ | September 2025's Monthly Weather Roundup
The Monthly Weather Roundup is sponsored by Jennifer Ansbach Coaching / The Cozy Thesis — helping students and adult learners Write. Revise. Rise. Learn more at JenniferAnsbach.com. New Jersey's September weather broke the usual patterns. It began with a brisk chill. Then it shifted back to summer warmth. It's one of only a few times on record when the second half of September was warmer than the first half. Overall, temperatures ended up a bit above average. Dave and Joe then noted drought warnings in northern areas. Coastal regions faced heavy rain. Eroding beach sands now threaten winter storm defenses. They also discussed Hurricane Sandy’s 13th anniversary and whether memories of the storm are fading. Stay tuned for updates on hurricane risks and stunning fall foliage. Meteorologist Joe Martucci and NJ State Climatologist Dr. Dave Robinson shared the same August recap and wardrobe choice of a blue polo shirt. Turning to the weather, the two detail Hurricane Erin's coastal devastation with record-high summer tides and erosion. They noted cooler-than-average temperatures, a chilly month start and end, and severe drought conditions, with North Jersey under a drought for the first time in months. A stormy, hot mess | July 2025 Monthly Weather Roundup
Dave’s upcoming write-up, "Danger Lurks," reflects the month’s fatalistic tone. Dave and Joe discuss New Jersey's turbulent July, marked by extreme heat, flash flooding, and lightning fatalities. Coastal areas saw 5 inches of rain, with Union and Somerset counties facing severe floods, causing most of the 7 storm-related deaths. Warm ocean waters signal potential for stronger tropical storms. July was the 12th warmest on record at the Jersey Shore since 1895. However, it was the overnight low temperatures that really drove this. Recap the month of weather that was. March 2025 Monthly Weather Roundup: Drought Eases, Winds Soar!
Dr. Dave Robinson, the New Jersey State Climatologist and I talk about New Jersey's March 2025 weather. The drought is getting better, bad drought in the south shrinking, though the northern Highlands and far south are still under significant drought conditions. Speaking of drought, March had no snow. It was warmer than usual—4.2 degrees above normal—making it the 11th warmest March ever, starting cold but ending with super warm days. The two then mention a big cold front on March 29th that made temperatures drop 32 degrees in one hour in some spots, plus this winter was the windiest since 2010-2011 with lots of wind warnings. Dave adds that people noticed the wind, but there's not enough data yet to prove it's a long-term change. Recap the month of weather that was. It's all Jersey, with two of Jersey's best weather guys. Winter actually felt like... winter | NJs February 2025 Monthly Weather Roundup
The analysis of winter weather statistics revealed that New Jersey experienced its 55th coldest winter on record, with temperatures averaging below normal. Both Meteorologist Joe Martucci and Dave Robinson, the New Jersey State Climatologist, noted the significance of this winter's cold spells and their ecological impacts, such as potential changes in pest populations. They also addressed ongoing drought conditions in New Jersey, with southeastern areas facing extreme drought and concerns about groundwater levels. The urgency of addressing these environmental issues was emphasized, particularly as the state approaches critical months for rainfall and water supply management. 🏜️ It was how dry?! | November 2024 NJ Monthly Weather Roundup
November capped off the driest climatological autumn on record in the state, with 3.67" of precipitation between September and November, according to New Jersey State Climatologist Dave Robinson. Those records go back to 1895, also. The next driest was 4.24", too! This year blew out the old mark set back in 1922. November ended our statewide longest dry streak on record, too. Dave Robinson and I talk about why the recent rain was NOT enough to cure drought. October 2024 was NJ's DRIEST month on record (that's since 1895) | Monthly Weather Roundup
In the 1,558 months since NJ weather records have been kept (the year 1895), October 2024 was the driest month on record. Dave Robinson, the New Jersey State Climatologist says it absolutely crushed the previous highest mark, set in 1963, also in October. With New Jersey living in historically dry conditions, the whole state is now in drought for the first time since 1895. The bone-dry weather also meant temperatures records, but not due to the warmth at the end of the month. Stay until the end to hear Dr. Robinson's quick thoughts on the winter ahead, too!
