The Paulie Rhyme Podcast

Paulie Rhyme is an artist, educator, and father from Cleveland, Ohio, now residing in Handa, Aichi (Japan) after spending over a decade in the Bay Area, Ca. This podcast will touch on the topics and experiences that come with being a 20+ year indie musician, 15+ year educator, and self proclaimed progressive parent/spouse. It’s complicated, fun, and hopefully worth your time.

Translations, commentary, and story corrections by Moto. Thanks for tuning in.

Episodes are 3 parts like my life. This is fluid and will evolve at some point, but it currently makes sense.

  1. 13

    Ep. 13: 3 makes 1

As we move past the first half of the year, it seems like a great time to add something different to the podcast. In the past, we have broken these episodes up into 3 separate sections where you as the listener could hear them in 15 min. sections. For episode 13, we decided to combine the topics and present them as one longer program. We are looking forward to getting some feedback on this and will continue in this way, based on how our audience responds. So check it out, share, and let us know. Thanks! Artist Topic: New band project, upcoming events & tours Educator Topic: Summer camps! Going to Cleveland Parent Topic: Maya graduating homeschool middle school

  2. 12

P4: Supporting your creative child in Japan

For those parents who have kids who are interested in being a professional performer. Some mediums start earlier than others and some will require more. For us, we were able to provide age appropriate opportunities and support for our future superstar and had to make decisions that we felt would put and keep her on track for her dreams.

  3. 11

E4: Organizing a study abroad trip to the US

We are in the midst of organizing our first school trip to the US for our students. This is something we have dreamed of doing since we started and now that things are moving more toward a normal pace, it felt like now or never. While we are based in Japan, we hope that this helps give people some insight and the push they need to do similar events wherever they are. Some tips, why we chose Cleveland, and things we plan to do before, during, and after.

  4. 10

A4: Solo Shows, Setlists, and Club Dates in Aichi

This episode we dive into a different topic of being an artist in Aichi (or looking to perform in Japan). These tips work for solo artists such as singers and rappers, but also could help other artists who plan to perform in a club setting. Will at some point get more into Djing in Japan as well, but for now we hope that these tips help and spark more dialogue about the topic.

  5. 9

P3: Creating and Maintaining Balance for your Bilingual Teen

In the midst of learning in two different languages, living in two different worlds, and navigating teen life, as parents we can also feel the pressure of being on the end of alot of angst, aggression, and confusion. In this episode we discuss some strategies to help your teen and elevate some of the stress from your role as their parent. This is more of a springboard for further discussion, so feel free to hit us with your questions, comments, or experience.

  6. 8

E3: Parent/Teacher Conferences at CIS English

English Language education in Japan is big business and not necessarily in a good way. Modeled more after the cram schools, there is a sense that English is more of a luxury than a necessity when it comes to future goals and opportunities for students. We created a school where students can have fun, be challenged, and reach as far as they can with the fluency of their mastery of a new language. With this in mind, communication is key, so we provide conferences and assessments to help coach, educate, and keep everyone on the team in the loop.

  7. 7

A3 - Jazzy Handa: Organizing Shows in Smaller Japanese Cities

First one in part three. Couple tips and reflections on promoting the last show. Community, Promotion, Niche are covered plus general takes on what it is like to put together events in Japan. Sometimes it is better to rock where you at versus going big. Like, subscribe, leave a comment or question. Also check out the next parts of this section (Ep 8 & 9) as we talk about balance for homeschool kids and doing parent/teacher conferences at our English school. Thanks!

  8. 6

P2: Highlights and Goals (Balance in hybrid homeschooling)

Peace. Thanks for tuning in. This 3 piece is a dive into the highlights from 2023, as well as goals for 2024. For the artist section, we discuss what I want to do as an artist (fronting a band), organizer, and dj. For the educator section, we discuss schedule, camps, and what we can do to improve for the new year. Then finally as a parent, we talk more about homeschool, balance, and how things are going between that and part time public school.

A2: Highlights and Goals for 2024 (Rocking in Japan)

  11. 3

P1: Hybrid homeschool for bilingual kids

Some people when moving to Japan might find this helpful. There are more than a few options for bilingual kids, but a) they are usually super expensive, b) the kid ends up in public school with no chance of increasing their knowledge base of their home language, or c) they get disenchanted and opt out. Hopefully hearing more about our decision to do more of a hybrid homeschool option will help people who are in the same situation or will be in the future.

  12. 2

E1: Starting an English school pt. 1 - Winter Camps

Part 2 Discussing how we started our English school in Japan from a winter camp 8 years ago. Let us know what details you are interested in and we will dive in. Next up with be discussing winter school now versus then.

  13. 1

A1: Rocking with a live band in Japan

Part 1: Artist A quick dive into putting together a band as a not so new artist in a different country. More of an introduction to the topic, as I can and will go into more detail in future episodes. Feel free to hit us up with questions.
