Episode 4: The Process Church
Episode 4: They Worshipped Christ AND Satan, Allegedly Knew Charles Manson, and Became a Pet Rescue. The Process Church of the Final Judgment. In 1962 two former Scientologists met at the London branch of the Church of Scientology. One was a former call girl connected to one of Britain's biggest political scandals. The other was an upper-class architecture school dropout she would rename and essentially recreate as her public-facing mouthpiece. Together they built one of the most visually striking, theologically bizarre, and psychologically sophisticated cults of the 20th century. The Process Church of the Final Judgment worshipped Christ, Satan, Lucifer, and Jehovah simultaneously. Its members wore dramatic black robes on street corners in American cities in the late 1960s, produced extraordinarily designed magazines that are collector's items today, operated therapy sessions designed to surface members' deepest psychological vulnerabilities, and allegedly had connections to both Charles Manson and the Son of Sam murders. They disbanded in 1991 and became the Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah. This is a completely true story. In this episode we cover the Scientology origins of The Process, the recruitment funnel that turned therapy clients into devoted members, the theology that managed to be simultaneously sophisticated and unhinged, and the alleged connections to two of America's most infamous killers. We also go deep on psychologist Robert Jay Lifton's eight criteria for ideological totalism — the documented framework that explains exactly how The Process controlled its members and that applies, with uncomfortable precision, to political and religious movements operating right now around the world.Sources:"Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism" by Robert Jay Lifton, 1961 — essential reading"Love Sex Fear Death: The Inside Story of the Process Church of the Final Judgment" edited by Adam Parfrey, Feral House, 2009"The Ultimate Evil" by Maury Terry — the Son of Sam/Process Church investigation"Satan's Power" by William S. Episode 3: Project Stargate
Episode 3: Project Stargate The Government Paid Psychics to Spy on the Soviet Union for 23 Years. Here's What They Found. In 1974 the CIA handed a retired police commissioner named Pat Price a piece of paper with nothing on it but geographic coordinates. He closed his eyes — and described the interior of a secret Soviet weapons laboratory in Siberia with enough accuracy to trigger a formal Congressional investigation into whether classified information had been leaked to the researchers. No leak was found. This is a true story. The documents are on the CIA's own website.Project Stargate was a classified US government program that ran from 1972 to 1995, funded by the CIA and the Defense Intelligence Agency, investigating whether trained individuals could perceive distant locations, objects, and events using only the mind — a practice called remote viewing. It cost twenty million dollars. It involved physicists at Stanford Research Institute, military intelligence officers at Fort Meade, and a consciousness research institute in rural Virginia whose founder had been spontaneously leaving his body since the 1950s.In this episode we cover the Cold War paranoia that launched the program, the key remote viewers whose sessions became the stuff of legend, the CIA's classified analysis of the Monroe Institute's Gateway consciousness program, and what the science actually showed when the program was declassified in 1995. We also ask the question underneath all of it: what is the human mind actually capable of — when we stop assuming we already know the answer?Every detail in this episode is sourced from declassified government documents and verified reporting. Episode 2: The Family by Anne Hamilton-Byrne
Episode 2: She Bleached Children's Hair Platinum Blonde, Told Them She Was Jesus, and Nobody Stopped Her for Decades | The FamilyIn 1960s Melbourne, a glamorous yoga teacher named Anne Hamilton-Byrne convinced some of Australia's most educated professionals — doctors, lawyers, psychiatrists, and academics — that she was the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. What followed was one of the most disturbing cult stories in modern history.Hamilton-Byrne illegally acquired 28 children through adoption fraud and cult member pregnancies, bleached their hair identical shades of platinum blonde, dressed them in matching outfits, and raised them in isolation on a remote property at Lake Eildon, Victoria. She told them she was their biological mother. She told them the world was ending and only The Family would survive. And when the children reached adolescence, they were injected with LSD in dark rooms and guided toward accepting her divinity. The cult controlled a private psychiatric hospital. Its members included respected members of Melbourne's medical establishment. And for decades — while the children were beaten, starved, and drugged — nobody stopped her. This is a fully documented story. Episode 1: Operation Midnight Climax
Episode 1: The CIA Ran a Brothel in San Francisco, Dosed Strangers With LSD, and Called It National Security | Operation Midnight ClimaxIn 1955 the CIA rented an apartment in San Francisco, hired sex workers to lure unsuspecting men back to it, secretly dosed them with LSD and other psychoactive substances, and watched through a two-way mirror while agents took notes and drank martinis. They called it national security research. The agent running the program later wrote that it was "fun, fun, fun." Not a single person was ever held accountable.Operation Midnight Climax was a subproject of the CIA's MKUltra program — a twenty-year illegal human experimentation program that tested mind control, behavioral modification, and psychological torture on unwitting American citizens. In this episode we trace the full story: the Cold War paranoia that started it, the men who ran it, what happened in those apartments, and how the CIA destroyed the evidence before Congress could investigate.Every detail in this episode comes from declassified government documents and US Senate testimony.
