There are two main reasons for doing this: 1) to enrich our lives with the beauty and wisdom embedded in the great texts that older cultures have built up, using thousands of years of accumulated cultural resources. 2) to free ourselves from the frenzied, hurried lives that proliferate in ever-accelerating modernity.
