The Voice for Our Rivers | Meet The River Girl

Hello, I’m Debbie.I’m a river activist, and I care deeply about the health of our rivers and the life within them.In this first episode, I wanted to properly introduce myself, share why I do what I do, and talk about what’s really happening to our waterways.Too many people don’t realise what’s going into our rivers — from sewage pollution to everyday waste — and the impact it’s having on wildlife, water quality, and ultimately, all of us.But this isn’t just about problems. It’s about connection.Rivers are incredible places. They support so much life — fish, insects, birds — entire ecosystems that are often overlooked. They also give us something just as important: space to breathe, reset, and feel calm.I truly believe that when people understand rivers, they start to care about them. And when people care, things begin to change. That’s why a big part of my work is focused on education — especially with young people. They are the future guardians of these spaces, and they deserve to grow up knowing their value.I also want to encourage more people to speak up. To ask questions. To get involved locally. Because real change happens when communities come together and hold decision-makers accountable. This podcast is a space for honest conversations, learning, and hopefully, a bit of inspiration. If you’ve ever walked by a river, sat by one, or felt better just being near water — this matters to you too.Thank you for being here.Debbie AKA The River Girl X
