7 ways to pray for the Middle East this May

As each day brings new headlines of war and suffering in the Middle East, we continue to trust in the power of God to answer our prayers for the people of the region. In recent weeks, we have been inspired and encouraged by the faith of our supporters – like Maretta, a child displaced from southern Lebanon, who shared with us: “The Bible is our only comfort that gives us strength despite all the difficulties we face. In the Bible, the words ‘Fear Not’ are mentioned 365 times for all the days of the year. Jesus knew we would fear and reminds us not to fear despite all that we face. His message for us is to be strong and not fear but to pray.”  Like Maretta, let’s not give in to fear, but continue to turn to God in prayer. Download your May Prayer Diary here. Around the Table - Being Young in the MENA: Youth, Identity, and Shaping the Future

Being Young in the MENA: Youth, Identity, and Shaping the Future In this episode of Around the Table, we explore what it really means to be young in the Middle East and North Africa today. With over half the region’s population under the age of 30, this is a generation shaping the present as much as the future—full of creativity, resilience, and potential, while also navigating significant challenges. Together, we step beyond the headlines to hear a more nuanced story. From questions of identity and belonging to the realities of opportunity, uncertainty, and hope, this conversation offers insight into life through the eyes of young people across the region. We also reflect on the role of media in this landscape—how it influences, informs, and connects young audiences, and why platforms like SAT-7 are vital in creating space for authentic stories, and the Good News of Jesus, to be shared. This isn’t a conversation about easy answers. It’s about listening — to the challenges young people face, to the questions they’re asking, and to the hope they carry as they navigate a rapidly changing world and help shape its future. Whether you’re listening on your favourite podcast platform or via the SAT-7 UK website, we’re glad you’ve joined us around the table.   Show Note Resources: SAT-7 UK: https://www.sat7uk.org/ SAT-7 UK Podcasts: https://www.sat7uk.org/pages/sat-7-uk-podcast/

7 Ways to Pray in Times of Crisis

Welcome to 7 Ways to Pray, a monthly podcast brought to you by SAT-7. This month, we bring you 7 prayers from SAT-7 staff across the Middle East. Over the last month, we have all been left reeling by the sudden and largescale war in the Middle East that broke out at the beginning of March. You may have been wondering how to pray at this time of crisis. We hope these seven prayers will help guide you. Maybe you could share them with others – in your church, small group or prayer meeting? Around the Table - Hidden but Not Silent: Women in Afghanistan

Join us for another impactful conversation Around the Table, SAT-7 UK’s podcast where voices from the UK, the Middle East, and North Africa come together for honest, faith-filled conversations that go deeper than the headlines. In this special episode marking International Women’s Day, hosts Sophie Griffith, George Makeen and Martin Thomas are joined by best-selling author Karen Bartlett and distinguished TV producer and director Mikael Tunér. Together, they take part in a powerful and thought-provoking conversation about Afghanistan, exploring vital themes including women’s rights, justice, faith and the role of the media. While the discussion is not always easy, it is both necessary and deeply important — and one we hope you’ll find as insightful as it is compelling. For many of us, Afghanistan filled the headlines in 2021, with images of chaos, desperation, and departure as Western forces completed their withdrawal from the country. Then, almost as suddenly, it slipped from view; but for the people of Afghanistan, the story didn’t simply end there. So, in this episode, we take a deeper look at what life has been like since August 2021: the impact on women, on justice, on faith, and on the voices that are still finding ways to be heard, even under extreme pressure. We would have loved to have included the voices of women from Afghanistan in this episode. Unfortunately, due to security concerns, this wasn’t possible. Instead, we draw on the insights of people who have worked closely with Afghan women and their stories. We hope that Karen’s experience interviewing many of the Afghan women judges for her book Escape from Kabul, combined with Mikael’s heart for women’s programming after growing up in Afghanistan, makes for a compelling and inspiring conversation. This conversation is not about quick answers or simple conclusions. Rather it’s about listening — to stories of resilience, to the role of media and faith in closed spaces, and to the quiet hope that continues to exist even where freedom is severely restricted. Whether you’re listening on your favourite podcast platform or via the SAT-7 UK website, we’re glad you’ve joined us around the table.   Show Note Resources: SAT-7 UK: https://www.sat7uk.org/ Check out: Karen Bartlett’s Book: The Escape from Kabul: A True Story of Sisterhood and Defiance SAT-7 UK Podcasts: https://www.sat7uk.org/pages/sat-7-uk-podcast/

7 Reasons to Pray for the Middle East

Welcome to 7 Reasons to Pray for the Middle East, a special one-off podcast and church resource brought to you by SAT-7 UK. If we’re honest with ourselves, sometimes we can wonder what the point is in praying for people we’ll never meet, or for global situations that feel too big to solve. When we’re overwhelmed by the challenges facing the Middle East, our prayers can seem small and insignificant. Yet when we turn to the Bible, we see that God invites us to pray – not just to change the world, but to change our own hearts in the process. That’s why we’ve come up with 7 Reasons to Pray for the Middle East – a brand-new resource for you and your church, as well as this month’s podcast. We hope these seven Bible-based reasons inspire you to pray more regularly, more urgently, and more deeply for our brothers and sisters around the world. Use today’s talk in your church or small group Would your church, prayer meeting or small group enjoy this talk? We have recorded today’s podcast as a video version that can be shown in your own setting, followed by a time of prayer for the Middle East. To access the video and sign up for your church resources, click here.   7 Reasons to Pray for the Middle East Let’s recap the 7 reasons to pray for the Middle East, along with the Bible references used: We want to be more like Jesus. “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.” John 17:20-21 Our MENA brothers and sisters are asking us to. “But God has put the body together… its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honoured, every part rejoices with it.” 1 Corinthians 12:24-26: It gives us a more global perspective. “[Stand] firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” 1 Peter 5:8-10 To align our hearts with God’s heart. “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Matthew 6:10 As a biblical response to our worries. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:6 It inspires us to praise God! “Praise him for his acts of power, praise him for his surpassing greatness.” Psalm 150:2 God answers our prayers. “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” James 5:16   Further prayer resources To keep going in your prayers for the Middle East, visit sat7uk.org/pray where you’ll find links to our latest Prayer Diary, as well as recent episodes of 7 Ways to Pray, our monthly prayer podcast.

7 Ways to Pray for the Middle East this November

Welcome to 7 Ways to Pray, a monthly podcast brought to you by SAT-7. When we watch the news and see some of the huge challenges facing the Middle East and North Africa, it can be hard to know how to pray. In this podcast, we’ll share a round-up of 7 key prayer points, to guide and inspire you in your prayers for the region. This month, we are praising God for answered prayer. Back in September, many of you joined SAT-7 and other Christian organisations in a global day of prayer for peace in the Holy Land. In answer to these prayers, it is hugely encouraging to see a ceasefire agreement on the table, and the return of hostages and those who were imprisoned. As well as continuing to pray for the Holy Land at this crucial time, please lift up Sudan, where peace remains elusive. Thank you for joining us in prayer. We thank you for the medium of satellite television, and the way it has enabled SAT-7 to continue reaching Afghan believers despite an internet blackout. We give thanks for SAT-7 KIDS programme In His Image, and pray that young viewers will become rooted in the Bible. We celebrate all the new believers who have come to know you through SAT-7, and pray you will protect Idriss in Algeria and draw him even closer to you. We pray for David as he starts his new role, and for him and the Church Engagement team as they make plans for 2026. We lift up all our Advent plans, and pray that those using SAT-7’s resources will be “overwhelmed with joy” as they learn about the Middle East and reflect on Jesus’ birth.   In His name, Amen.

Middle East Briefing - Churches under attack

The whole Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has been on high alert in the last few weeks. Suffering continues in the Holy Land as Gaza’s only Catholic church was bombed last week, and a suicide bombing in a Damascus church has sent shockwaves through Syria’s minority Christian community. Despite a fragile ceasefire, tension remains high after the launch of airstrikes on Iran in June and the subsequent retaliatory attacks. Pray for peace and unity in Syria, and for God’s supernatural comfort for those who lost loved ones in the attack on St Elias Church. Pray that the ceasefire in Iran will hold, and that Iranian Christians will hold on to their faith in Christ even in troubling times. Give thanks that SAT-7 is raising the voices of refugees and calling for kindness. Pray for the ongoing impact of the video campaign. Pray for all SAT-7’s viewers in the MENA who are experiencing despair and hopelessness in the face of recent violence and uncertainty. Ask that SAT-7 will continue to make programmes that speak out God’s love and joy to millions across the region.

The Türkiye Briefing: Türkiye’s forgotten faith finds a voice

Türkiye is a nation that bridges East and West. It was once the heart of early Christianity and is home to many foundational moments in the Church’s story – from the journeys of the Apostle Paul to the Council of Nicaea. Yet today, Christianity is often misunderstood and marginalised among Turks. This briefing explores Türkiye’s Christian heritage, its complex modern landscape, and the impact of SAT-7 TÜRK – a Christian television channel that this year celebrates a decade of boldly sharing the love of Christ with Turkish-speakers on Türkiye’s national satellite.   Show Note Resources: Prayer Points: For a Turkish Church that is well-connected, united, full of love, and standing firm in Jesus. For wisdom and safety in Türkiye in the wake of earthquakes and protests. For the team at SAT-7 TÜRK, that they may be encouraged and supported as they work to represent the Christian faith in Türkiye in an accurate, loving and understandable way. Give thanks for SAT-7 TÜRK and pray that viewers will continue to be encouraged and supported, so that they may grow in faith and fellowship. Why “Türkiye” and not “Turkey”? You might notice that we spell ‘Turkey’ as ‘Türkiye’. In 2022, the UN accepted the country’s request for its name to be internationally recognised as Türkiye. As an international broadcaster, and one that has a presence in the country, SAT-7 has decided to adopt this change.

Middle East Briefing - Holding on to a legacy of peace

In this month’s episode... from ongoing conflict in Gaza and Sudan to Türkiye’s earthquakes and political unrest, Christian communities in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are facing immense physical and emotional trials. At the same time, the passing of Pope Francis – a global symbol of peace and unity – has stirred reflection and renewed calls for compassion and courage. Through it all, SAT-7 continues to uplift and connect believers, broadcasting peace, prayer, and truth into places of darkness. Show Note Resources: What can we learn from the legacy of Pope Francis? https://www.sat7uk.org/pope-francis-legacy Gaza’s Christians recall Pope Francis’ final message of peace: https://www.sat7uk.org/pope-francis-gaza-christians Supporting Sudanese Christians through the civil war: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CdBja6ghW0 Prayer Points: Pray for a de-escalation of conflict in the Holy Land, and ask that most vulnerable will receive the food and aid that they urgently need. Pray for the hundreds of Christians sheltering in the Holy Family Catholic Church. Pray for an end to the civil war in Sudan, and for aid to reach those in need of food and other essentials. Give thanks that SAT-7 is able to broadcast into Sudan, and pray that Sudanese Christians will continue to hold onto their faith in Jesus as they endure the hardships and danger of war. Pray for wisdom and safety in Türkiye in the wake of the earthquakes and political protests. Give thanks for the life and legacy of Pope Francis, and pray that the new Pope Leo XIV will follow his example of advocating for the Middle East’s Christian population.

THE TUNISIA BRIEFING: Pursuing love, freedom and equality in North Africa

Once the centre of the Church in North Africa, Tunisia has a rich Christian heritage and a vibrant modern culture. As the birthplace of the Arab Spring, Tunisia has enjoyed over a decade of progressive social policy, particularly in relation to women’s freedoms. But today, concerns are growing about the country’s move back towards authoritarianism. It’s into this context, that SAT-7 has been developing and broadcasting more content for Tunisia and North Africa, bringing joy to believers and empowering marginalised women.   Show Note Resources: Although Easter is fast approaching it’s not too late to dive into our devotional book 40 Days of Prayer for the Middle East which explores the fascinating Christian heritage of countries like Tunisia. The reflection on Tunisia is particularly moving, as it tells the personal story of Perpetua, one of the early Christian martyrs. Link to resources: https://www.sat7uk.org/40days Prayer Points: Pray that Tunisia will continue to make progress towards freedom of speech, gender equality and freedom of religion, despite the current political situation. Give thanks for Today Not Tomorrow. Pray that SAT-7 programmes like this will continue to provide support and encouragement for women facing challenges and discrimination. Give thanks that SAT-7 is producing more programmes in Tunisia. Ask God to grant the team understanding of the unique needs and challenges of those in Tunisia, as well as the skills, creativity, and understanding to produce more programmes that touch viewers’ hearts and will attract and speak to a wide and growing audience in the country. Pray for Christians in Tunisia, that the constitution will once again unequivocally grant freedom of religion. Pray for strength for Christians in the country who have been rejected by their families and who feel under pressure for their faith in Jesus. Give thanks for the SAT-7 Viewer Support team, and the encouragement that they provide. Pray for them as they kindly and patiently answer questions and interact with viewers and ask that the Lord uses their conversations to plant seeds of faith that will bear fruit for generations to come.

7-Minute Briefing: Hope in Christ in the Middle East

As a new year dawns in this episode, we’ll explore how there is cause for hope in the Middle East. A ceasefire has been agreed between Israel and Hamas; the ceasefire in Lebanon continues, and the new Syrian leadership promises to respect the rights of minorities. But while there is cause for optimism, many people in the region begin another year amidst war and uncertainty, with conflict continuing in Sudan and the fall of the Assad regime leaving many with unanswered questions and an ongoing search for justice. Resources: Check out our latest In Conversation podcast, where Emily talks to Egyptian filmmaker Maggie Morgan about Maggie’s latest project, SAT-7 ARABIC programme Today Not Tomorrow, that’s filmed on the back of a lorry as it travels around communities in Egypt asking the questions that no one else is asking. Prayer Points: Please pray for wisdom for Syria’s new leaders, that they may have a heart for unity and peace, and that they will seek to protect the freedoms of Christians and other minorities in Syria. Give thanks for the ceasefire deals in Lebanon and the Holy Land and pray that they will lead to permanent peace deals. Pray for an immediate end to the conflict in Sudan; that those facing hunger and persecution may be filled with the hope of the Spirit and be able to find courage and strength during this time. Pray for the bereaved, injured and displaced across the Middle East and North Africa, that they will experience the Lord’s peace and comfort. Pray for protection and safety of those who have fled their homes. Please pray for the SAT-7's ministry in 2025, that our programmes may touch viewers’ hearts and encourage and strengthen isolated believers across the MENA region.

This month, in our first ever Country Briefing, we take a closer look at Sudan – a nation that has been gripped by war since April 2023. 7-Minute Briefing: Freedoms remain elusive for Middle East Christians, women and the press

Freedom and security seem ever more elusive in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). This month, we bring you various reports on religious freedom, women’s rights and press freedom, as well as more hopeful news from Syria. The Church across the MENA faces a host of new and existing challenges to its freedom. In rural Egypt last month, the construction of a new evangelical church has sparked hostilities against local Christians, including homes being set on fire and attacked with stones. In Algeria, most Protestant churches remain closed after being forcibly shut by the government in 2017. Concerns are also growing for religious freedom in Afghanistan, Azerbaijan and northern Yemen, where Christian minorities are under increased persecution. And in Gaza, International Christian Concern have reported that up to three quarters of the already-tiny Christian community have either left or are planning to leave the enclave. Here at SAT-7, we long for freedom in the MENA – where our brothers and sisters in the MENA can worship together without danger or restrictions, where women are treated as equals, and where journalists are free to report in safety. But while that day remains elusive, our channels continue to broadcast powerful programmes that hold out the certain hope of freedom in Christ. And in a story of resilience, we celebrate the news that church bells will ring out again in Raqqa, Syria. “The fact that people can once again rebuild their churches and ring their bells is a sign of hope to a place that has suffered so much,” says George Makeen, SAT-7’s Ministry Content Adviser. “SAT-7 is aware of the good work churches are doing in Syria – the spirit of unity is growing.” Let’s continue to pray for freedom, unity and resilience for the Church across the MENA. 7-Minute Briefing: Middle East Christians carry the cross amid ongoing suffering

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) finds itself on a knife-edge after the fresh involvement of Iran in the ongoing Holy Land conflict, and a war between generals continues to ravage Sudan with dire humanitarian consequences. In the past month, many Christians in the MENA celebrated Western Easter on 31 March. But against a backdrop of regional war, famine, tension and suffering, celebrations were subdued.  Stay up-to-date with the latest news and monthly updates sign-up at sat7uk.org.   Read more about our Easter appeal: https://www.sat7uk.org/womenoffaith

7-Minute Briefing: The cost of war and a call to forgive

The Holy Land and Sudan continued to suffer ruinous wars this month. Millions of people face hunger and starvation in Sudan, and famine has now taken hold in Gaza. As the Muslim month of Ramadan approached last week, international efforts to end both conflicts were intensifying. Hopes for a 40-day ceasefire between Hamas and Israel were disappointed last week. Israel has so far held off a ground invasion in Rafah, where around 1.3 million displaced Gazans have taken refuge. Among them is Dalia, a teenage girl who told SAT-7 about her hopes to finish her education. Click here to read the Briefing and watch Dalia tell her story. Calls for revenge can be deafening in the Middle East and North Africa, where lives are regularly torn apart by national conflicts and community tensions. But SAT-7 is sharing a radically different message through the stories of Christians who choose to follow Christ’s call to forgive their enemies. In this month’s Briefing, you’ll also find the story of Rania, a Lebanese woman who forgave her father’s killer. And, when the news headlines feel like too much to take, we can always respond by bringing these situations before our heavenly Father in prayer. We invite you to join us on Zoom on 27 March, for what will hopefully be an uplifting and encouraging “40 minutes of prayer for the Middle East”.
