Tales of Virtuous Stepmothers: A Conversation with Georgina Warren
n today’s episode, we explore how stepmoms are painted in traditional fairy tales versus reality. Georgina’s book consists of 12 original fairy tales, each shifting the narrative to champion the stepmother as a positive influence. We'll also discuss the historical stigma attached to the title of stepmother and how Georgina aims to dismantle the overly clinical and negative discourse surrounding stepfamilies.Georgina acknowledges that while rebellion against stepparents is common among teens, her own relationship with her stepmother improved through shared responsibilities, experiences, and a broader supportive community. She advocates for a similar approach in nurturing positive stepfamily relationships.Georgina Warren is a graduate of Christopher Newport University, where she majored in French, and recently received her Master of Library and Information Science degree from the Catholic University of America. She lives in Washington, D.C., and currently works at the Library of Congress.Homeschooled until she was fifteen, she later attended the British School of Washington and the Field School, where she first cultivated her profound love of the literary, visual, and performing arts, and pursued her vision to become a writer, artist, and actor. Tales of Virtuous Stepmothers is the first installment of what will eventually be a three-volume collection.

From Applications to Scholarships: Denise Thomas and Mindi Trimble's Guide to College Success
Welcome to another episode of the Stepmom Wisdom Circle! If you're a stepparent or parent with teens looking to go to college, you're likely wondering how to afford one of the biggest milestones in their lives. In today's episode, we dive into the recent changes in the FAFSA application process and how they impact potential college students, especially those in stepfamilies. We'll explore common mistakes people make when completing the FAFSA and how to avoid them. Plus, we'll discuss what qualities colleges are looking for in prospective students and share specific steps families and students can take during their freshman and sophomore years of high school to prepare. Given the significant financial and emotional investment in the college application process, we'll also talk about how families can manage these pressures to avoid overwhelming their high school students. Today, I'm thrilled to welcome two experts in college applications and scholarship strategies. First, we have Denise Thomas, a TEDx speaker, international bestselling author, and mentor to parents of college-bound teenagers. Denise inspires, educates, and equips parents to actively support their children in achieving financial freedom. From bankruptcy to finding a way for her two homeschooled children to attend college and 17 scholarships totaling more than 199, 000, she's on a mission to help other families do the same, change lives, leave legacies, and flip the student debt statistics in the U. S. Our next guest is Mindi Trimble, known as the 'bubble wrap' of college prep. Mindi mentors students on how to intentionally POP out from the application crowd without POPPING under pressure on the way to their best-fit college. Besides increasing acceptance rates, Mindi's Acceptance Academy program has helped students win scholarship and financial aid offers ranging from 5 to 30 times what they invest in her guidance. When not singing her students' praises, Mindi's flexing her Phi Beta Kappa from UC_Berkely skills at trivia nights, hiking with her family and German Sheagle, and using her formal opera training to make up silly versions of soprano arias. Stay tuned until the end to get all the links to the special programs Mindy and Denise are offering. Now, let's dive in!" Here are some of the topics we addressed: Discovering affordable college options, overturning common myths. FAFSA is crucial for university aid - denouncing myths and urging application. FAFSA process improved to avoid errors. Parents need help with college scholarship process. Scholarship's importance for future success and help. Start early for better writing, scholarships and college applications. Waiting until junior year is a myth. "Myth of the 'spike' for college admissions" Focus on intentional, impactful involvement, not superficial interest. Be well-rounded and make uncommon connections to inform your activities. How To Connect With Your Child and Help Them Sleep Better And Reclaim Your Evenings
What would you give to not have your kids or stepkids argue, fight or resist going to bed every night? I remember when our kids were young, there were times when it seemed to take forever to have them go to bed, let alone fall asleep. Bedtime meant alone time for me and my husband not to mention the health benefits of our kids, making sure they had enough sleep. On Today’s podcast, I’m talking with Brook Packard, a writer, musician and an early childhood educator who created the Sleepytime Club which makes bedtime simple for families, helping parents reclaim their evenings. She believes bedtime is the first, best habit; a moment of grace to us every single night; and that we can change the world for the better by using this time to care for ourselves and our families and communities. The Power of Forgiveness with Taylor Tagg
Do you feel like your stepkids or the ex have done you wrong and you have a hard time letting go? Are you feeling bitter and resentful at how your life is turning out? Maybe it's time to think about forgiveness. Forgiveness is not about letting the others walk all over you, or to let them get away with their bad behaviors or action. For starters, forgiveness is letting go of the pain and sting that the person's actions have done against you. Forgiveness is an act of self love. Forgiving another person is probably one of the hardest things we might ever have to do. If you're in a place where you are tired of feeling the wait of the anger and resentment on your shoulders, this is the show for you. My First Mother's Day As a Stepmom
For many stepmoms, Mother's Day is a difficult day for them. It's a reminder that the man they love has kids with another woman, whom the kids call mom and often want to spend the day with her. Most likely, you do a lot for your stepkids, just like a regular mom. The only difference, is you get not recognition or appreciation for what you provide to the family. In this podcast, I share my very first Mother's Day as a stepmom and how, with each passing year, my relationship with my stepdaughters got better. How are you planning on celebrating this Mother's Day? What are some of your challenges and struggles attached to this day? Leave a comment below and I'll gladly respond. Do You Spy On Your Kids
With Lisa Honold and Claudette Chenevert I’ll admit, I “spied" on our kids while they lived in our home, especially during their teen years. There was nothing fun or exciting about snooping on what our kids did on the internet (which by today's standards would be seen as primitive), going through their stuff to make sure they weren’t doing anything illegal or immoral. This was one area where my husband and I strongly disagreed on whether it was OK for me to spy on our kids or not. And he’s not the only one. Recently, I asked my Facebook followers if they spied on their kids and the responses were from Absolutely to Never and everything in between. Now if I changed the word from spying to monitoring, then the response was different. Even my husband was more on board with the thought of monitoring our kids and seeing this as being responsible parents. So what’s the difference between spying and monitoring? Lisa and I talk about this in our video and what best tools to use to help you monitor your children without being invasive. Celebrating International Women's Day
Celebrating all day long the amazing women that help up make a difference in our world, encourage and embrace gender equality, and teach others what that looks like. Here is a video that two of my colleagues and I created, sharing our thoughts and wisdom about what Women's Day means to us. http://empowerthedream.com/intl-womens-day-2018-webinar/ #PressForProgress #IWD2018 #internationalwomensday #stepmom #stepmomcoach “Men are taught to apologize for their weaknesses, women for their strengths.” Lois Wyse For far too long, our societies have misappropriately fused sex with gender to the point of creating a hierarchy among the sexes. Boys are disciplined to present themselves as stoic, while girls are to portray themselves as emotional. Because of the association between emotionless and strength, and sensitivity and weakness, society often places men above women. Men are associated with strength, and women with weakness. And this has trickled down to the workforce. sports, schools, among other places. where girls and women alike are not as valued for their worth. It's changing, yes....slowly. How has this impacted our past, our future and what empowering ways can we show up and go forward as a whole society where our girls no longer feel less than? Like this Poscast? When Someone Purposefully Makes You Angry What Can You Do?
Ever had someone get angry at you and then blame you for the way they felt? A while back, I did a video called " Before You Engage In An Argument With Your Spouse" and a viewer asked me what to do when your partner purposefully makes you angry. There are many reasons why we get angry. It can be because we're hungry, tired, overwhelmed or again we are angry because we feel hurt, afraid, alone. In this video, I shared my story of getting angry at my husband and our kids and what are some of the solutions to help you in these types of situation. Celebrating National Stepfamily Day
National Stepfamily Day is Sept 16th and I’d love to talk to you about why it’s important to celebrate this special day and offer suggestions and ideas. Stepfamilies have come a long way since we first merged our families together in 1990. Back then, there was little information about support and advice in how to come together, understanding our roles as stepparents and dealing with exes and stepkids that weren’t welcoming of us. Today with the internet and social media, millions of stepmoms and stepdads around the world can search and reach out to other stepparents to get support and advice. Many have found comfort in knowing they are not alone or going crazy in their stepmom journey. When Christy Tusing Borgeld decided to start National Stepfamily Day in 1997, I don’t think she realized the impact she would have on the people that became stepfamilies. She helped to bring us out of the shadows and to shine, to show that there are great people that become stepparents every single day. She inspired many, including myself, to promote and become advocates in creating positive images of steprelationships.
