The Stories That Sparkle

I’m Hella Rader—divorced, middle-aged, childless (no cat) lady, the first American of my family, the only daughter born to German immigrant parents, and a full-time writer. The Stories That Sparkle is the space I created for women you have never heard of and could easily pass on the street to share, in their own voices, the intricacies of their stories about starting over in life, building community, inhabiting their bodies and more. With a good sense of humor, open heart and open mind, I let my curiosity lead the way as I explore the very human complexity in others and, in the process, in myself. Because together, we bring light into dark places.New episodes drop every other Wednesday wherever you get your podcasts. hellarader.substack.com

Pain is Not Required with Dr. Lillian Medhus, Aspire Women's Wellness (Video Pod)

In this (video pod) episode of The Stories That Sparkle Podcast, I am joined by Dr. Lillian Medhus (founder of Aspire Women’s Wellness) to talk about how her own health journey led her to change how she practices medicine, listens to the women who come to see her, and asks questions to help them navigate complex gynecologic issues—especially endometriosis and pelvic pain (and of course menopause). As someone who struggled through the shame and grief of painful periods and sex for most of my life, I certainly wish I had met Lillian a lifetime ago. Lillian sent the Menopause Questionnaire and Endo Screener docs to me which I have uploaded to this folder for you to access and download. You can watch the episode here on Substack or on my YouTube channel (in the Video Pod playlist), or listen to audio only wherever you get your podcasts. You Deserve a Good Night's Rest with Katya Eckert, A Domani Sleep (Video Pod)

In this (video pod) episode of The Stories That Sparkle Podcast, Katya Eckert (founder of A Domani Sleep) and I talk about her mission to help women get the rest they deserve while feeling good and sexy in their sleepwear—and their bodies. We also nerd out about textiles, sustainability, and supply chain—just in time for Earth Day 2026 and Mother’s Day (you can get a little A Domani Sleep for the mom in your life). And, because I now have new equipment to help me record video with better audio on the go, I was able to meet with Katya earlier this week in real life to record extra footage in her studio while sitting next to the Rack of Joy (samples of the A Domani sleepwear collection). Katya is a breath of fresh air—her enthusiasm for what she does and her willingness to support others is inspiring. You can watch the episode here on Substack or on my YouTube channel (in the Video Pod playlist), or listen to audio only wherever you get your podcasts. To watch the bonus clip of Katya and I meeting IRL, go to my YouTube.com@hellarader channel or click here: Katya Eckert BONUS CLIP.And now, I invite you sit back, get comfortable and watch (or listen in).LINKSAll things Katya Eckert and A Domani Sleep:Follow on Instagram: @adomanisleepVisit on the Web: adomanisleep.com (use code HELLA20 at checkout to save 20% on your first order)All things Hella Rader:Every link in one place: linktr.ee/hellaraderHave a story to share on the podcast? Sexual Assault Awareness Month SPECIAL EPISODE (Kayla, SA Coordinator, The Laurel Center)

As a survivor of sexual assault, I know how difficult it was for to come forward and share with anyone—friends or family—about what happened to me. I suffered for many years alone and in silence until I felt safe enough to talk about it, heal from it, and get the support I did not know I deserved. Today, I do what I can to help raise awareness, and since April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, I recorded this special episode with Kayla, SA Coordinator at The Laurel Center, a non-profit located in Winchester, VA which provides 24-7 emergency shelter and services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence and their dependent children. Kayla shares about the work she does, how survivors can find help, and how friends and family members can support someone they love who finds the courage to share with them what happened. Discoball Tour Review & What's Next (Video Pod)

Howdy! My first ever VIDEO podcast episode of The Stories That Sparkle Podcast is now live—woohoo! To celebrate, I offer you my one-on-one look back on the Discoball Tour (including my key take-aways) and a look ahead for what’s next for the podcast (including a new regular release schedule and topics I want to explore further). Please note: this is not a docu-series episode or behind the scenes footage from the tour—just me, talking, about my experience. For now, this is a special video one-off but who knows, there could be more down the road. First, I need to sort out the details of the tech and audio quality. (Apologies in advance if the video is not on all platforms…you can watch here or on my YouTube channel and those only doing audio, sorry! I will work on that for the next time). Meet People Where They Are (Faith Power, The Laurel Center)

I am thrilled to participate in this year’s Podcasthon, the world’s largest charity podcast event during which podcasters worldwide release a special episode of their podcast between March 14-20, 2026 and shine a light on a non-profit of their choosing. This dedicated episode of The Stories That Sparkle podcast features The Laurel Center, a non-profit located in Winchester, VA which provides 24-7 emergency shelter and services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence and their dependent children. To learn more about the full range of services The Laurel Center offers to survivors, I sit down with Faith Power, Executive Director, and talk to her about the complexities of being a survivor, the complicated needs they have as they rebuild their lives, and the importance of meeting them where they are. As a survivor myself, this conversation was not only inspiring but also affirming and validating. It reminds me that my healing centers on reclaiming my voice—and the full team at The Laurel Center helps survivors do just that in big and small ways. Not sure if you are in danger? Move Into More of Myself (Jenn's Story)

This episode of the Stories That Sparkle Podcast is the last one I recorded on the Discoball Tour and boy am I grateful that this, of all the episodes, is the one I recorded with Jenn. Curled up on the couch in her living room while a kid’s birthday party next door filled the air with sounds of joy, Jenn shares about her experience with postpartum depression, anxiety, and shame, and how, with the support of community, she moved into more of herself. It involved a desire to express more of themselves and explore more of their identity in all that word can include: parent, partner, child, adult, therapist, queer, creative, and Jewish. Jenn is an incredible example of someone willing to step out and say: “Here I am. I am here.”This is the eighteenth recording session of the Discoball Tour, the last one of the tour, and the only one I recorded in Cleveland. Jenn’s thoughtfulness and sweetness are a gift and I am beyond grateful that we reconnected through this and that of all the conversations I had over the four weeks I was on the road, this is the one that closed out the tour. Jenn touched on all the key themes of the tour (Be Ready, Get Ready & Rest. Joy, Delight & Pleasure. Unshame Your Wants & Desires. Risk Stepping Out as Who You Are. I am Home (in Myself). There will be more about all that in an upcoming episode. Now I invite you to get comfortable, sit back, and listen in. LINKSAll things Hella Rader:Have a story to share? Follow Your Inner Voice (A Chat with Shara Nova)

Part trip down memory lane, part real talk about being a woman in the music business (especially a female composer), and part artist-to-artist chit chat, this episode of the Stories That Sparkle Podcast is a wide-ranging conversation between me and Shara Nova, the woman in front of and behind My Brightest Diamond. So grateful my Discoball Tour dates matched up with her schedule so that I could spent two night with her in Detroit, watch her perform as her magical self at The Wasserman Projects fundraising evening, and have this chat about her experience coming up in the music business (we knew each other way back when…I once even tour managed for her in 2006), what it’s like now and where she sees it going from here (in a post-COVID, social media and now also AI world). And for those who know, Hella No Chords makes a cameo appearance at the end of this episode…so thrilling. This is the seventeenth recording session of the Discoball Tour, the second to last one of the tour, and the only one I recorded in Detroit (where I also got to meet up with a new friend, Scott Stabile). At the very tail end of my 30-day driving tour, I was delighted to reconnect with Shara as though no time had passed (the last time we had that kind of time together was at least 16 years ago). Listening back to it now, I am reinspired by all that we chatted about…and really proud of myself for referring to myself as an artist. Ya’ll, that has been the journey of my lifetime and having it come full-circle with such a dear friend is extra magical for me. Thank you Shara Nova for clearing the way for so many and for your generosity of hospitality, creativity and thoughtfulness. I love you!Now I invite you to get comfortable, sit back, and listen in. Living the Woo-Woo (Regina's Story)

When I asked Regina to record an episode of the Stories That Sparkle Podcast with me (as part of the Discoball Tour), she took a risk when she told me she wanted to share about her concept of spirituality. A retired holistic psychotherapist and award-winning author (Courageous Gilbert), Regina talks about how the spiritual connectedness of all beings, how that connection shows up in her daily life, and how she lives the woo-woo. As someone who is quantum physics adjacent when it comes to all things spirituality, I was beyond thrilled to have this conversation with her. This is the sixteenth recording session of the Discoball Tour, and the second one I recorded outside of Chicago. With less than a week to go of my 30-day driving tour, I felt pretty fried when I got to Regina’s house and I am so grateful to her and her husband George for not only their hospitality but also for a safe, peaceful space to rest my heart and mind. Money is the New F Word: Freedom (Conversation with Anita Knotts)

I am so excited to share my conversation with Anita Knotts (founder of the Lotus Women’s Institute, TedX Speaker, and Podcast Host) in this episode of the Stories That Sparkle Podcast. I first met Anita in July 2024 right as my corporate job ended and I had a decision to make. She inspired me then and she re-inspired me again during this conversation. We talk about Money (with a capital M) including women’s shame around money, taking responsibility for our own financial health, and believing in ourselves as we go after our dreams. Anita is on a mission to help other women take a seat at the wealth management table, to grow their businesses within their communities, and to embrace the many allies of men and other women around them. Because if not now, when? and if not me, who? For many of us, Money can be an “M” word, but for Anita, Money is the new “F” Word: Freedom. This is the fifteenth recording session of the Discoball Tour, and the first one I did outside of Chicago. I met with Anita at her house at the start of my last week on the road, and I was exhausted. Thank you to Anita for bringing the pep back into my step, giving me the fuel I needed to finish strong, and reminding me that there is no shame whatsoever in getting paid to do what I do.So, I invite you to get comfortable, sit back, and listen in.LINKSAll things Anita Knotts:Lotus Women’s Institute, the Anita Knotts hub for coaching, recruiting, speaking, educating, and empowering women to leadAnita Knotts on LinkedInListen to Anita’s podcast, Women, Wealth and Wisdom, wherever you get your podcasts. Just Keep Moving (Sue's Story)

In this episode of the Stories That Sparkle Podcast, my good friend Sue (whom I have known for almost twenty years but with whom I am rarely together with in person) shares her story of meeting Greg, the love of her life, only to lose him suddenly in late 2019. Even though it still hurts, Sue’s face lights up every time she says Greg’s name, thinks about him or talks about their time together. And she has the best suggestion for anyone going through grief: let yourself be messy and just keep moving. This is the fourteenth recording session of the Discoball Tour, the only I did in Des Moines, IA and the last thing I did right before I drove off to Chicago. Thanks to Sue and her inestimable tour guide prowess, I had a wonderful time roaming the streets of Des Moines, and felt right at home in the Midwest. This also marks the start of my last week on the road, and by now, I am pretty tired. Dig Through the Mountain (Tara's Story)

Tara, Sheri’s niece, was so determined to tell her story, and through that, her daughter Naomi’s story, that she drove five hours across the full length of Nebraska to spend the night, record with me, and turn back around the morning to drive home. Tara’s journey as a medical parent and the lessons she learned from Naomi’s six-year fight against all the odds is a true inspiration. And despite still being in deep grief, Tara’s passion, strength and courage shine through as loudly as the voice she found while digging through the mountain. This episode of the Stories That Sparkle Podcast is for everyone, parent or not—anyone who needs some encouragement as they struggle through something that feels impossible to overcome. This is the thirteenth recording session of the Discoball Tour, the second in Nebraska—by a lake surrounded by cornfields—and the epitome of what this podcast is all about. Getting to share stories like this one is the whole reason I do any of this. I am beyond grateful to Tara, all of Naomi’s family, and Sheri in particular for arranging this meet up (and to Craig for hosting all of us).So, I invite you to get comfortable, sit back, and listen in.LINKSAll things Tara:If you are a medical parent in search of support, Tara is willing to connect with you via Facebook: @Tara.SudbeckAll things Hella Rader:Every link in one place: linktr.ee/hellaraderContact me here for 1:1 mentoring, writing or speaking engagements: hellarader.com/contactFollow me on Instagram or check out my Website for more about meThe Discoball Tour DocuSeries on YouTube is a companion video blog for the podcast episodes I recorded during my 30-day cross country drive to record eighteen women’s stories in ten different cities. I am Home (Sheri's Story)

This episode of the Stories That Sparkle Podcast is part story, part conversation and part homecoming. Sheri and I have known each other for a long time and even though we have never lived in the same place, we are very close and I count her as one of my nearest and dearest. So, it was a no-brainer to make her home in Lincoln a stop on the Discoball Tour. What I did not realize was that we would drive on to Plattsmouth, NE and spend two nights at her boyfriend Craig’s house…on a lake surrounded by cornfields. And because it was on my mind for many different reasons, after Sheri shared her story of growing up on a farm, we kept coming back around to the question of “what is home?” and the realization that “I am home.”This is the twelth recording session of the Discoball Tour, the first on my turn back east towards home, and the first of two I recorded in Nebraska—by a lake and Sheri’s two dogs—while I stayed with Sheri and Craig. I am beyond grateful for their hospitality and care (and Sheri’s contribution to the Discoball Tour Raffle—a bag of Baker’s Candies aka Nebraska’s world famous chocolate meltaways). To get a sense of how much fun we had together, how beautiful Nebraska is, and what the “Good Life” (Nebraska’s state motto) is all about, check out the Reel I made on Instagram. Joy, Pleasure, and Delight (Kristen's Story)

This episode of the Stories That Sparkle Podcast is more of a conversation. That’s because my first “encounter” with Kristen (aka Sofia Dragon) was a visit to her Instagram page after a friend of ours introduced us. And in her profile, I saw four letters that totally freaked me out: BDSM.Boy am I glad that I took that as an opportunity to be curious. As soon as I stepped into Kristen’s apartment to record with her, it was clear that we were on the same page. Or wavelength. Or frequency. Whatever you want to call it, spending time with her, hearing her story of healing, and listening to her explain BDSM as a practice within a safe, consensual container, was a true joy, delight and pleasure. Kristen is both a pro dominatrix, an intimacy coach, and an astrologer. To me, she is now also a friend. I am so grateful to her for her willingness to share openly and honestly about her journey and her experience with all the things that many consider taboo. (Links to her and other resources are below). This is the eleventh recording session of the Discoball Tour and the only one I did in Boulder, CO while I stayed with friends in Denver. It reminds of how important it is for me to lean into any discomfort, ask questions, to consider another way, and be open to learn something new.So, I invite you to get comfortable, sit back, and listen in.LINKSAll things Kristen aka Sofia Dragon:Website: Sofia DragonInstagram: @SofiaDragonArtsResources Mentioned in the Episode:SacredEros.com - Global Directory of Tantra and Sacred Sexuality ProfessionalsJohn Wineland (Embodiment, Sacred Intimacy, and Life Purpose) on Instagram: @john_winelandCarnival DNGN (in Colorado): EventsSomatic Practitioners (all areas of focus) that I recommend:If you want to begin somewhere, get into your body and heal old wounds, working with a somatic practitioner is a great place to start. Everyone Has A Story (Kate's Story)

This episode of the Stories That Sparkle Podcast reflects the essence of this whole project that I started in early 2025. Kate is a woman I met over fifteen years ago when I lived in Santa Fe. We worked together for a year and a half and became close friends. Separated by life, time, and distance, we have not seen each other in thirteen years. As part of my drive to record and amplify other women’s stories and voices, we reconnected and picked up where we left off like it was yesterday.Kate shares a story (which she chose from a list we ran through) that she has only shared with family and close, intimate friends. She offers details that she has rarely, if ever, shared with anyone about her experience of loving her son Jax who was born premature, and who lived for 92 days. She decided to do this so she could share the lessons she learned and help that one person out there hear something that may give them hope, support and care. It was a honor to be with Kate the day we recorded this and it is a privilege to share her story with all of you today. This is the tenth recording session of the Discoball Tour and the fourth (and last) one I did in Santa Fe, NM. It exemplifies the epitome of the power we all carry within us—our stories, and the contribution we make to our shared humanity when we share them. So, I invite you to get comfortable, sit back, and listen in.LINKSTo support a family going through a medical crisis, please consider contributing to the work of the Ronald McDonald House. Beauty of Grief (Debra's Story)

In this episode of the Stories That Sparkle Podcast, Debra and I chat about grief, a topic that has come up in many different ways in many of my conversations. Since Debra is a trained grief tender, I knew she could help put grief into a new light and show us the beauty, joy and even hope that sits within it. My hope is that this conversation helps us all find the help we need to tackle any grief that may be standing in our way. Debra is also a book coach aka book midwife, and she helped me write the first draft of my memoir. I count her as one of my nearest and dearest. This is the ninth recording session of the Discoball Tour and the third one I did in Santa Fe, NM. (ok, true confessions, we recorded the original conversation in person in Santa Fe). Listen to the episode to hear the details of why we re-recorded via Zoom on New Year’s Day and how Debra’s willingness to care for herself gave me permission to care for myself. It is just one of the many reasons I love her so much. So, I invite you to get comfortable, sit back, and listen in. LINKSAll things Debra Rosenman:Writing a non-fiction memoir? It's Never Too Late (Libby's Story)

In this episode of the Stories That Sparkle Podcast, I am reunited with Libby, a woman who was a real rock to me during the four years I lived in Santa Fe, NM, and listen to her share about what led her to go to school in her 70s, what it means to live intergenerationally, and how she struggles through imposter syndrome. It is the kind of chit chat we used to have sitting on the couch in her living room, only this time, we sat outside on a park bench in downtown Santa Fe. No matter where or when, spending time with Libby is always a hoot—a time filled with wisdom, laughter, and truth. I just love her. This is the eighth recording session of the Discoball Tour and the second one I did in Santa Fe, NM. I cannot say enough about how much Ramona means to me personally, how much I have learned from her professionally, and how much she and her husband Andy helped me recognize the creative within me.This is the seventh recording session of the Discoball Tour and the first one I did in Santa Fe, NM. Jill is an all-around gorgeous woman of exuberance, who, from music and sports, learned to keep the eye on the prize and keep moving forward. This is the fifth recording session of the Discoball Tour and my second one in Dallas. And for this one, I got the added benefit of spending the night with Jill and her husband Richard…two of the most generous, open-hearted individuals who, together, make for a magical couple. Relax and Have Fun (Gale's Story)

In this episode of the Stories That Sparkle Podcast, Gale (G-A-L-E) makes me laugh, reminds me to relax, and makes the world’s best case for having fun. Like me, Gale likes to hit the road, make new friends, and take notes—on her legal pad. She is such a hoot and reminds me so much of Barbara (my mentor and spiritual mom who passed away last year). It was a real pleasure to spend the afternoon with Gale and a total honor to be with her right before she went on a date. Oh, did I mention that Gale is definitely younger than me? Well, she is.This conversation is a total blast and I cannot wait to see Gale again…and have her take me on a tour of her version of Memphis, or Key West or, or, or—who knows where the two of us might end up.This is the third recording of the Discoball Tour and my only one in Nashville (I drove to Dallas the day after I recorded this episode). Also: I did not know Gale until I was introduced to her, by text, the night before we recorded this conversation by a woman I had met ten days before that. In this episode of the Stories That Sparkle Podcast, Becca and I sit down in her sunroom in Nashville, TN and talk about turning 40, the different kinds (and meanings) of endurance, and what she would want the younger version of herself to know. What a perfect way to kick off the series of conversations I had and recorded with eighteen different women during my four-week driving Discoball Tour across the US in September 2025! Also: While Becca and I know each because we are both in the Core Energetics Somatic Practitioner Training Program (say that ten times fast!), she is one of my dearest friends. Reclaim My Sparkle (Zoie's Story)

To close out Domestic Violence Awareness month, Zoie (their mom is Jenn, who shared her story in Episode 21: I Stand By Me) joins me via Zoom and shares their experience as a kid coming of age in a home impacted by domestic violence. Zoie is an inspiration to me about how to set boundaries, make choices around relationships, and reclaim the sparkle within. This story perfectly illustrates that no matter our age or circumstance, our stories have so much to offer to each other. Pro Tip: get yourself a “Mom Squad,” or as I like to call it, a “Variety Pack of Love,” aka a community of love and support. At the end of our conversation, we also discuss Jenn’s experience with relationships, dating and finding joy in her body as part of her healing. The Art of Balance (Caroline’s Story)

In this episode, I chat with Caroline, an incredibly talented actor and teacher (acting/public speaking/yoga—I refer to what she and I work on together as feminine movement) about what success as an actor means to her today, the difference between a want and a need, and the lows she has overcome at different times in her career. She is a shining example of the art of balance. She has helped me personally with all three (and then some) over the last year and a half, and I am beyond grateful she is willing to share honestly about her journey in and through the arts. So, I invite you to get comfortable, sit back, and listen in.LINKSAll things Caroline Kinsolving:Caroline’s website with all the details of her work and ways to connect with her: CarolineKinsolving.comCaroline on Instagram: @carolinekinsolvingHere is a link to the short film Caroline made (and which she references in our conversation) as a way to process much of what we talk about in our conversation: Stable (short film)All things Hella Rader:Every link in one place: linktr.ee/hellaraderWanna buy me a cup of coffee while I tour around the US? Face the Fear (Laura’s Story)

I'm kicking off a little mini series about creativity with three different women who do three very different things. In this episode, I sit down with Laura, an old friend of mine with whom I reconnected recently. She's an incredibly talented woman who works as a writer, producer, director, and actor. And most recently, she is a documentary filmmaker with her debut doc short, Tiny Movements. Together, we talk about facing the fear to use our creative gifts to be a force for good in this world. So, I invite you to get comfortable, sit back, and listen in.Content warning: the film Tiny Movements is the story of woman who survived domestic violence and marital sexual abuse. Laura and I talk about that in this episode so please, take care of yourself, and if needed, skip this episode. Intentional Intimacy (A Conversation)

Partners sleeping in separate bedrooms (or, as The NY Times calls it, “sleep divorce”) is a topic many different people have a bajillion different thoughts—and feels—about. Does it reinforce intimacy? Does it mean there’s a problem in the relationship? Does it represent the end or an expansion? Does it mean it’s time to leave or an opportunity to be even more intentional? And all the other things you might be thinking. This one took two sessions because the first time, I was so uncomfortable with all of this talk about (intentional) intimacy, that I crashed the car and changed the subject—radically. Thankfully, my bestie Addie was willing to talk about this not once, but twice. And not only that—she was incredibly real and vulnerable. I am beyond grateful to her.So, I invite you to get comfortable, sit back, and listen in.And please, comment and let Addie and I know your thoughts on all this!Link to The NY Times article we reference.Listen now wherever you get your podcasts. Trust the Nudge (Lucy’s Story)

This episode of the Stories That Sparkle Podcast is the last of three conversations I recorded while on the road around Atlanta, GA, and it bookends the trip perfectly. My bestie Lucy and I lounge around in our PJs, sip coffee in her sunroom, and talk about her journey after receiving a breast cancer diagnosis. Hint: her story honors the fear and anger while also celebrating the love and service. Lucy is a funstigating adventurer who insists on having a good time (we are two feathers of a bird), even when she gets serious about how trusting the nudge saved her life! So, I invite you to get comfortable, sit back, and listen in.Listen now wherever you get your podcasts. Open to Receive (Kathryn's Story)

In this week’s episode of the Stories That Sparkle Podcast, I sit down with Kathryn, who is a woman I have known for almost twenty years, and from whom I have learned a lot of important spiritual lessons. This is the second conversation I recorded on my 10-day driving tour outside of Atlanta, Georgia. Because so much came up for me during that trip and by the time I got to Kathryn’s house, I really wanted to ask her about how she grows through the good. The result is a continuation of the back and forth exchange of spiritual ideas that started when I arrived at her house the day before. (I learned a lot of lessons about pacing myself by not pacing myself. I look forward to putting all that into practice on the upcoming 4-week, cross-country tour). Also: early on, you will hear from Sadie, Kathryn’s pup, who chomps on her bone, and once in while, chimes in.So, I invite you to get comfortable, sit back, and listen in.I am so grateful that I get to record women’s stories, amplify women’s voices, and celebrate women’s choices. Run To Your Life (Julia's Story)

This episode of The Stories That Sparkle Podcast is the first in a trio of conversations I recorded on a mini driving tour around various towns outside the perimeter of Atlanta, GA. Over ten days, I covered 1,400 miles start to finish, stayed in multiple homes, and recorded three different with women I know. It was a trial run in preparation for the big cross-country tour I am doing in September (more about that at the end of this episode). While I did not plan it—at least not intentionally—all three conversations very explicitly revolve around spirituality, the woo, or whatever else you might want to call it.Anyways, for this first conversation, I sit down with Julie, a woman who sparkles with effervescence from every part of her being, and listen to her share about the death of her (adult) son Luke. And while we get into the deep grief and pain of that impossible loss, Julie, who reflects the same love for life that Luke had, carries a message of hope, spiritual connection, and courage that you will not want to miss. So, I invite you to get comfortable, sit back, and listen in.All these women are amazing and they share with such courage so please help get the word out: share this episode or the podcast, rate, review and comment, and please consider becoming a free or paid subscriber to my Substack: hellarader.substack.comTo keep up with all the shenanigans on my upcoming cross-country tour, please follow me on Instagram. Manifesting the Upper Shire (Joanna's Story)

In early June, I loaded up my recording equipment, and drove to Hillsdale, NY to meet up with Joanna. The last time we saw each other was sixteen years ago when we both lived in NYC and she would crash the East Village Radio recording studio while Ruth and I were live on the air with the Hella Fabulous Show. But, from the way we launched right into our raucous conversation and finished each other’s sentences, you would think we hang out every day. Anyways, Joanna has lived at least 4, or maybe 5, different lives—and while we get into some of that, we mostly focus on the Upper Shire, a magical campsite she built with her partner Barbara. Joanna aka Backroad Jo may live in the rolling hills of the Hudson Valley, but she is definitely still punk rock on the inside. (more links to more about the Upper Shire below). As hilarious as she is gracious, Joanna made it easy for me to laugh at the technical glitches that came up during this true on-the-road recording session. (FYI—I selected the wrong input settings so I had to get help from Reddit and ultimately YouTube to work out how to fix that in post-production…thank you to the internet for saving this episode from total ruin).Anyway, this one is a lot of fun, and I invite you to get comfortable, sit back, and listen in.Links for all things Upper Shire:Upper Shire booking page on HipCampVideo about the Upper Shire, featuring Joanna and BarbaraUpper Shire on InstagramAnd CLICK HERE to link to all my things. One Woman Show (More of Hella's Story)

Three years ago, I stuck a big post-it note on my wall. It’s still up there, even if a little bit faded. On it, I wrote: “Within two years—I will have a very different job and the way I make my money will look NOTHING like it does now. One. Woman. Show.”Then I got nervous. I did not want to limit or “tell” the Universe or the God of my Experience aka my Higher Power, the Still Small Voice, what to do (or how) so I added a “?” and then an addendum caveat: “Or? No limit on what. No rush—do not push the river.”Well, it’s three years later, and my life, never mind my job, looks nothing like it did in 2022. I wrote a book, not a one woman show. I started a podcast as a way to share other women's stories, not my own. And today, I release the an episode with only my voice making an appearance. It is a show with one woman. Or, a one woman show.Enjoy! To get all the links and keep up with all the things I am doing, go to: linktr.ee/hellarader, becomes a subscriber on Substack, or follow me on Instagram: @hellarader(and btw—I will workshop parts of this episode into a true one woman show…just give me a minute).I am so grateful that I get to amplify women’s voices, stories and choices. Change by Degrees (Carrie's Story)

In this episode of The Stories That Sparkle podcast, Carrie and I crisscross time and space, loop around only to come full circle as we chat about her evolving experience of motherhood and her own growth as seen through the lens of giving birth to four amazing kids. This episode concludes the series on Change with a BANG! Carrie is as magical and funny as she is wise and loving so we cover: Motherhood. Change by Degrees and as Natural Disaster. The Three C’s of Change: Control, Curiosity, Choices. Plus: we discover that two ADDs make a linear thought. This episode is also full of firsts—the first time I sit down with someone that I have known for almost thirty years and with whom I have shared a lot of life and covered a lot of ground, the first time I record somewhere other than in my sunroom, and the first time I use my mobile recording set up. Phew, there is a lot going on in this conversation and you do not miss this one!So, I invite you to get comfortable, sit back, and listen in. This is a public episode. Keep It Simple (Shelley's Story)

Shelley is a survivor who has learned how to live every day. And I won’t lie, this conversation was, at times, hard for me and brought up some active vulnerabilities.Which brings me to a brief content warning: This episode includes discussion of relationship/mental abuse and miscarriages. Her spirit is so buoyant and uplifting, I could sit and listen to her for hours. If you are local to the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, and in need of a chiropractor, I cannot recommend Dr. Mascha Williams, D.C. Sometimes it’s gritty, heartbreaking, and tangled in shame. And sometimes, it’s all of that and beautiful. My story isn’t linear. My parents divorced when I was in third grade. My dad wasn’t around. My grandmother—my heart—was the only one who truly saw me. I had a baby in high school, and while everyone loved him, I didn’t feel like anyone loved me. I wasn’t told I was doing a good job. I was just quietly drowning in the weight of responsibility and the absence of comfort. When the courts decided he’d be better off with his father, I left. I moved to the beach in NC and started over. People there made me feel important. I was promoted quickly, made friends, had money to spare. I traveled. I laughed. I lived. But I also carried shame like a second skin. Some knew my full story. Others didn’t. I was split between who I was and who I was trying to become.I came back home and ended up in relationships that mirrored old wounds. Messy, painful ones. I was briefly married. That ended too. I felt like a disappointment again. And then I lost my grandma, just before COVID. Then my dog, Pocket—my four-legged soulmate. Grief came in waves that never fully settled.I still don’t know how to talk about my feelings without stumbling. I still have days where I want to disappear or sleep forever. I still feel lonely sometimes—even now, even with so many of the things I always said I wanted. A home. Work that matters. People I love. And yet, I still catch myself feeling like the sad friend—the one who has nothing exciting to share, nothing to brag about, just quietly carrying a lot.But there are also days when I smell honeysuckle and everything softens. I watch the light flicker through the trees, touch moss on a morning walk, or see a video of a dog discovering a butterfly or a frog, a friend finally getting her dream, and I feel it—this ache of joy that reminds me how much beauty the world still holds.Yoga, meditation, a warm patch of sun, ripe strawberries, dog cuddles, long walks… they’ve helped me carry on. They remind me that healing doesn’t need to be loud or grand. It can be quiet and steady. It can be a choice made in the stillness of morning: I forgive myself again today. The other night I sat with friends, and what struck me most is this: no one is alone. Everyone is carrying something. Everyone is trying. Everyone just wants to feel a little more connected. A little more seen. A little more loved. If that’s you, I see you.You are not alone.Carry on, in whatever way you can.And let the tiniest moments be enough. This is a public episode. ABOUT THIS SHOW
