Monastic Imagination: Ep. 9 Marie Mondesert
The Chemin Neuf Community (French: Communauté du Chemin Neuf) is a Catholic community with an ecumenical vocation.[1] Formed from a charismatic prayer group in 1973, it has 2,000 permanent members[citation needed] in 30 countries, and 12,000 people serving[citation needed] in the community missions. Its main founder is the Jesuit father, Laurent Fabre [fr].[2] The community takes its name from the first meeting place, based in Lyon, 49 Montée du Chemin-Neuf [fr]. A product of the Charismatic Renewal, the community claims to adhere to an Ignatian spirituality. It brings together priests, lay celibates (men and women) as well as non-celibates and couples with or without children. The community directs its actions around the principle of unity: unity of Christians (ecumenism), unity of men (notably between different cultures and nations), unity of couples and of families. Monastic Imagination: Ep. 8 Simon Lewis
The Community of St Anselm is an Acknowledged Religious Community in the Church of England, founded by Archbishop Justin Welby in 2015 as part of his first priority: the renewal of prayer and Religious life. We draw together Christians aged 20-35 from all over the world, and any branch of the Christian family tree, for a year of living a shared life of prayer, theological study and service to the poor. There are three spaces of belonging for members: Immersive (Resident at Lambeth Palace), Integrated (Working and living outside) and Alumni (those who have completed the year and are dispersed across the world). All members shape their lives around the Community’s Rule of Life and participate in Community meetings, retreats and other activities. This is a public episode. Apostle of Sensitiveness: Denise Bradley
Denise Bradley Programme Manager: Marginalisation with the Corrymeela Community To have a sense of that is vital, a basic and underlying awareness of life and its potentialities at every level of experience, this is to be an Apostle of Sensitiveness. These are the words of Howard Thurman, author, theologian, pastor to the civil rights movement, and ancestor whose wisdom is desperately needed in our time. In 1950 Thurman wrote of the need for materials of refreshment, renewal, and challenge and for those who are intent upon establishing islands of fellowship in a sea of racial, religious, and national tensions. Decades later this project takes up Thurman’s call drawing from deep wells of wisdom found in the lives of present-day peace practitioners, social healers, mystics, and monastics. These folks are sensitive enough to ask the question “how do we live well together” and courageous enough to live out the answer. You are invited on this journey to listen for the sound of the genuine in the stories of these Apostles of Sensitiveness. Music Credit: The Great Pattern This is a public episode. The Response: Q4: What do we mean when we talk about “civic engagement”?
What do we mean when we talk about “civic engagement”, and can it be effective. Are certain things merely tools adopted by the left and right when they want to be in opposition, or are they inherently different. I’m thinking about the Resistance’s use of opposition tactics and how we use apps to email our reps, for example. The Response: Q3 How can we grow? How have we grown?
This week I'd like for us to ask, "How can we grow? How have we grown?" Ideally we will reflect on this question in both the communal and personal sense. Quite often, particularly in our modern world of online discourse, we use our online space to highlight the faults and shortcomings of others. But we can also use this space as an example of MLK's church of sorts, a community in pursuit of self-growth and advancement. The "we" in "How do we grow?" should be self-determined. Regardless of who you are, wittingly or unwittingly, we are part of a community of type. Whether it is professional, political, geographic, spiritual, familial, interest-based, racial, etc; reflecting on communal growth can spur us to leadership and (possibly) action. Additionally, if you have been able to read MLK's "All Labor Has Dignity", I would like us to apply this conversation to highlighting an economically inclusive path forward for all. How must we evolve politically, economically, and morally to create a prosperous nation for all? http://www.truth-out.org/progressivepicks/item/28568-martin-luther-king-jr-all-labor-has-dignity https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2011/02/all-labor-has-dignity-martin-luther-king-jrs-fight-for-economic-justice/71423/ http://www.beaconbroadside.com/broadside/2014/08/following-the-way-of-martin-luther-king.html This is a public episode. The Response:Q2 What must be held sacred and what must we allow to be profaned?
1:30: The question I will be posing this week regards the sacred and profane: In the battle to come what must be held sacred and what must we allow to be profaned? I am thinking in terms of how ideology becomes infused with religious fervor and how that factors into political strategy. 1) A great lecture to review that defines the problem on a university level: http://heterodoxacademy.org/2016/10/21/one-telos-truth-or-social-justice/ 2) An excerpt from a The Politics of Small Things: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6lO-SqJEUcDYlN5cENRNlpLMms/view?usp=sharing 3) Democratic Politics Have to Be “Identity Politics” http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2016/11/democratic_politics_have_to_be_identity_politics.html This is a public episode. The Response: Question 1- What is to be done?
The question posed in our first discussion will be the infamous “What is to be done?”. And I ask that in terms of short-term and long-term political strategizing and planning: how can we, one day, seize power I’ve put together a syllabus of readings - all of which can be completed in about 30 minutes. There’s a longer essay that makes a thoughtful argument for a new member-based political party, a collection of brief reflections on progressive federalism in op-ed format, and a parable of sorts. I’ve also included a link to the Indivisible Guide - which has provided a blueprint of sorts for all of the rowdy town halls you’ve seen on CNN of late.
