I Am Legend (1954 Book) Versus I Am Legend (2007 Film)
For classic science fiction and horror fans, the name Richard Matheson is not lost on them. With an impressive resume of short stories, novels and script work for both television and film, it's no wonder Matheson's body of work would be in high demand for adaptation. Sadly, due to the time period in which his works were created, some modern audiences find his work dated. That shouldn't matter when Hollywood comes to call, right? That's what we plan on figuring out as we have I Am Legend (the 1954 novel) VERSUS I Am Legend (the 2007 film) on The Versus Machine Podcast! Resident Evil (The Video Game) VERSUS Resident Evil (The 2002 Movie)
Originally conceived as inspiration from Capcom's classic Sweet Home, Resident Evil has since taken the world by storm. Through theme park exhibits, video games, comic strips, movies, and everything else, it has become a staple in this world of zombie phenomenon. And there is no better example of the way a zombie should be than that of this game. And when making a movie out of such a sensitive source material, its important to note that all ideas are important ones. No matter what, the script has to be solid. And sometimes, we have to take the advice coming to us. The Hobbit (The Book) VERSUS The Hobbit (The 1977 Animated Movie)
A fantasy book is a way to make us see something we had never previously imagined. New worlds, new rules, and new magic permeate in a way that leaves us breathless a great deal of the time. And in terms of fantasy, none are more revered than the stories of J.R.R. Tolkien. Through a decisive and broad stroke, his worlds have become so fleshed out to us that it is hard to imagine a world without them. With his first foray into Middle-Earth in “The Hobbit,” we became so incredibly engrossed with his story that it's hard to say we ever left. And although many films of his have been made, few truly exhibit his goals. And in comparison and contrast, Rankin-Bass's classic retelling makes us sing, dance, and truly feel. Of Mice and Men – (The Book) VERSUS Of Mice and Men – (The 1992 Movie)
The American Dream is by far the most wonderful and enlightening ideal of our world. An idea born from nothing more than a dedication to ourselves, it is one that has more incarnations than almost any in our world. The idea that one person can be born from nothing and make something meaningful and important of himself is one that is so universally enriching that it is beyond reproach. And while many authors have tackled the American Dream on the American Farm in literature, no one is a match for John Steinbeck's classic tales. In particular, the tale of "Of Mice and Men" shows the allure of the American Dream. And in terms of adaptation, we at the Versus Machine Podcast find that the 1992 Gary Sinise and John Malkovich version of this classic tale is by far the best to run through our machine. Cycle Of The Werewolf (The Novella) Versus Silver Bullet (The Film)
Stephen King has a body of work that is ripe for adaptation. Over the decades many of his short stories and novels have been adapted into everything from feature films, television miniseries and even comic books. Depending on their faithfulness to the source material, those adaptations run the gauntlet of being surprisingly good to painfully bad. But what about those adaptations penned by the man himself? There are only a few examples of King being in charge of transferring his work from one medium to another and we here at the Versus Machine are taking advantage of that! Get ready for Cycle Of The Werewolf (the 1983 novella) VERSUS Silver Bullet (the 1985 film)! Watchmen (The Graphic Novel) VERSUS Watchmen (The 2009 Movie)
Graphic novels and graphic novel movies have been a staple of American culture since the golden age of comics. They have steadily become the most interesting and hotly debated of cinematic exploits. To talk about a time when movies made us feel like we knew superheroes is to talk about a time when cinema ruled the world. But in terms of graphic novels, none are more highly revered than that of Alan Moore. Of all Moore's work, his foray into the nuclear-driven world of "Watchmen" has so many topics for discussion, let alone comparison. Once called "unfilmable" by the author himself, this novel deals with so many topics that it is rough to even summarize. But though "unfilmable," "300" director Zack Snyder has dared to conquer such a thing in his 2009 adaptation. We at the Versus Machine Podcast feel Snyder got some of the essence of purpose and characters, but he missed the biggest points. Unfortunately, this leaves us wanting in a way that may be hard to conquer for any fan. The Great Gatsby (The Book) VERSUS The Great Gatsby (The 2013 Movie)
In terms of the American Dream, it does not get better than F. Scott Fitzgerald. He unique vision of a time when climbing to the top meant knocking someone else down, he, more so than other of his time, understood that not everything was as it seemed. While all of his stories embody this image, none are more well-known that that of "The Great Gatsby." His unique foray into love, lust, betrayal, and dreams is the epitome of a roaring '20s masterpiece. We at the Versus Machine Podcast feel this book is wrought with excitement and action for a possible movie adaptation, and we can also see that Baz Luhrmann's 2013 adaptation makes its mark. While arguably improving certain actions, it does not capture the essence of what is Fitzgerald's classic tale. With such a far-gone adaptation, we start our machine.
